Use your computer’s built-in file manager: open File Explorer on Windows and select Documents, or open Finder on a Mac and choose Documents from the sidebar or Finder’s Go menu. The shortcut’s visibility and the folder’s exact location can vary with your account and sync settings.
Open Documents on Windows

Open File Explorer from the taskbar or Start menu.

Select Documents from Home or the left navigation pane. Microsoft documents these known-folder shortcuts in File Explorer for Windows 11 version 22H2 and later: File Explorer in Windows.
If Documents is not shown
Look in your user profile folder in File Explorer. The folder’s physical location is not guaranteed to be the same on every PC; it may have been redirected or synced. Microsoft’s overview of file-system management explains how Windows handles known folders: Managing the File System.
Open Documents on a Mac
Open Finder, then use either route:

In the menu bar, choose Go > Documents.
Apple identifies Documents as one of the folders in your home folder and describes these Finder navigation options in its guides to folders that come with your Mac and going directly to a specific folder.
Enter a folder path in Finder
If you know the pathname you want to open, choose Go > Go to Folder in Finder and enter it. Use this when you have a specific path; the sidebar and Go menu are simpler when you just want the usual Documents folder.

If you use iCloud
If iCloud Desktop and Documents is enabled, documents may be synced and shown through iCloud Drive. Apple’s guide to folders that come with your Mac explains the relationship between the Documents folder and iCloud.

The exact route depends on your Linux distribution and desktop environment, and there is no single menu path established here that applies to all of them. Open the file manager supplied with your system and consult its official documentation for the Documents folder location and navigation steps. A distribution-specific route requires knowing which Linux system and desktop you use.
