Splitting a 3D model can make parts easier to orient, fit within a printer’s build area, or print with fewer supports. It also creates a seam that becomes part of the finished object’s load path. For a stronger, better-aligned result, choose the split around the part’s loads and print constraints, then prepare and join the mating faces using a method suited to the material.

Why split a 3D print?

A split is useful when a whole model cannot fit on the build plate or when separate sections can be printed in more suitable orientations. It may also reduce support material. Prusa’s modeling guidance discusses these benefits and the need to design parts with assembly in mind.

For FDM (also called material extrusion), print orientation affects mechanical behavior because the part is built in layers. The relevant choice depends on the forces the part will face and its geometry; there is no single orientation that is strongest for every shape. A split may improve how sections print, but it adds an interface whose location and fit matter.

Choose a split location around loads and appearance

Start with the part’s expected loads, visible faces, printer build limits, and features likely to need supports. If the design allows it, avoid placing the seam across the most demanding load path. Also consider whether the seam will be visible and whether it can be finished without damaging important features.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

The mating surfaces need enough area and suitable geometry for the intended joining method. Locating features such as pegs can help the sections align; Prusa notes they may also contribute to strength. Check that the parts fit together as intended before applying adhesive or using a fusion process.

Prepare and align the mating faces

  1. Check the fit. Bring the sections together without adhesive or fusion. Confirm that locating features engage and that the faces meet as designed.
  2. Clean the surfaces. Prusa advises keeping glue surfaces smooth and free of grease or dirt to help achieve an invisible seam.
  3. Consider light sanding. It can help in some cases, but whether it is appropriate depends on the geometry, surface finish, material, and joining method. Do not remove so much material that the fit or alignment features are compromised.
  4. Control alignment during assembly. Position the sections carefully and follow the selected product or process instructions, including any required assembly and completion time.

Choose a joining method for the material and application

There is no universally strongest glue or joining process established for all 3D-print materials. Compare the options against the material, expected loading direction, joint area and shape, alignment tolerance, visible finish, whether the joint needs to be removable, and the handling requirements.

Approach What the cited source establishes What to check for your part
Two-part epoxy Stratasys lists it as an option for joining PolyJet parts in its guide to joining 3D-printed parts. Confirm that the adhesive manufacturer’s technical instructions support the specific material and intended use. The PolyJet example does not establish compatibility with every FDM filament or resin.
Cyanoacrylate Stratasys also discusses cyanoacrylate in the context of PolyJet parts in the same guide. Check material compatibility and application requirements for the exact adhesive and print material; the cited example is not a universal FDM recommendation.
Glue or friction-based fusion A Georgia Tech PLA project describes glue and friction-based fusion. Treat these as methods described for that PLA project, not proof that they suit every filament, part geometry, or use. Follow the applicable process guidance.

The cited sources cover different materials and print processes, so their examples should not be treated as interchangeable. Select a method only after checking its instructions for your material and application; do not infer a strength ranking from the fact that a method is listed.

Use a practical design-to-assembly workflow

  1. Identify the part’s loads, appearance requirements, support-sensitive areas, and build-volume constraints.
  2. Choose a split and print orientation that improve fit or printability while keeping the seam away from the most demanding load path where practical.
  3. Add locating geometry, such as pegs, if it suits the design, and verify the fit before joining.
  4. Make the mating faces smooth and clean; sand lightly only if suitable for the material and joining method.
  5. Select an adhesive or mechanical/fusion approach based on the actual material and intended use, and follow its manufacturer’s or process instructions.
  6. Assemble with alignment controlled and let the joining method complete as directed.

If you need to split a model in software, Prusa documents a cut tool in PrusaSlicer. The cut itself does not determine seam strength: the resulting interface still needs appropriate geometry, fit, and a compatible joining method.
