Object literals do not create a this scope: an arrow inherits this from the surrounding lexical context. Use concise method syntax when a function should act on the object used to call it; use an arrow for a nested callback that should retain an outer this.
Why an arrow function in an object does not use the object as this
The braces in an object literal group properties; they do not establish a new this context. That means an arrow function assigned to a property captures this from where the arrow is defined, not from the object that contains it. MDN explains this distinction in its this reference.
const user = {
name: "Ari",
greet: () => this.name,
};
user.greet(); // Does not read user.name
Calling user.greet() does not change an arrow’s this. The precise value the arrow sees depends on its enclosing execution context; it is not automatically user.
How concise object methods get their this
A concise method uses an ordinary function’s call-time receiver. When called as user.greet(), its this is user, so it can read that object’s properties.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
const user = {
name: "Ari",
greet() {
return this.name;
},
};
user.greet(); // "Ari"
This binding follows the call expression, not the place where the method was written. Calling the same function without an object receiver can produce a different this, depending on strictness and execution context. See MDN’s explanation of how this is determined.
Choose the function form that matches the job
| Form | How this is selected |
Good fit |
|---|---|---|
Concise method, such as greet() { ... } |
From the receiver at the time of the call, such as user in user.greet(). |
An object operation that reads or updates that object’s state. |
Arrow property, such as greet: () => { ... } |
Lexically inherited from the surrounding context; calling it through an object does not replace it. | A callback that should retain an outer this, rather than an object method whose this should be its receiver. |
Arrows also keep their lexical this when passed to call, apply, or bind; those methods cannot rebind an arrow’s this. For details and examples, see MDN’s arrow-function reference.

Use arrows for callbacks that should retain a method’s receiver
A method can use its call-time this and pass an arrow to a nested callback. The arrow captures the method’s this, so the callback can still access the receiver later.
const counter = {
count: 0,
increment() {
this.count++;
setTimeout(() => {
console.log(this.count);
}, 0);
},
};
Here, increment() is called on counter, so its this is counter. The arrow passed to setTimeout inherits that same this. This pattern can also suit callbacks used with methods such as map or filter, and promise handlers, when retaining the surrounding receiver is the intended behavior. MDN demonstrates the same lexical approach in its arrow-function examples.

Two other arrow-function limits to know
- No own
argumentsbinding: an arrow usesargumentsfrom its surrounding function, if one exists. Use a rest parameter such as(...args) => {}when the arrow needs to collect its own arbitrary arguments. - Not a constructor: an arrow cannot be called with
new. Use a constructible function form or a class when instances should be created withnew.
These differences are part of arrow functions’ behavior, not merely stylistic exceptions. MDN covers them in its arrow-function reference.
