A real Linux driver is not just a loadable module that prints a message or exposes a custom interface. It integrates a specific device with the kernel’s driver model and the bus or subsystem responsible for that device’s behavior. Start by identifying your hardware, its bus, the kernel version you are targeting, and the subsystem that should serve its userspace needs; those choices determine which APIs and development process apply.

Choose the device and the kernel context first

There is no single driver recipe that works for every Linux device. The kernel’s Driver implementer’s API guide spans general driver APIs, bus documentation such as PCI and USB, and many subsystem-specific interfaces. A storage device, network device, sensor, and display component may therefore belong in different frameworks even if each is ultimately backed by hardware.

Before writing code, record the following:

  • The target hardware: identify the exact device or board and what behavior you need to support.
  • The connection: determine how the device reaches the system, such as through a bus or another platform-specific mechanism.
  • The kernel version: choose the version you intend to build and test against. Kernel interfaces evolve, so examples and documentation must match that version.
  • The owning subsystem: establish which kernel subsystem should expose the device’s behavior to userspace. Avoid inventing a private interface if an established subsystem already covers the use case.

If your goal is simply to communicate with a device from an application, a userspace library or existing system interface may be more appropriate than a new kernel driver. Kernel code is warranted when the device needs kernel-level integration, coordination with an existing subsystem, or behavior that cannot appropriately be handled in userspace.

Find the framework where the driver belongs

Read the relevant API and subsystem documentation

Use the kernel’s Driver implementer’s API guide as an index, then follow the documentation for the selected bus and subsystem. The top-level guide is broad by design; it does not establish that any one API or sample is suitable for every target. Read the guidance for the kernel version you selected and check whether the subsystem defines its own interfaces, conventions, or testing expectations.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Study peer drivers and maintainership context

Look at in-tree drivers for comparable devices in the same subsystem. They can show how that subsystem expects drivers to register, represent device state, report errors, and interact with userspace-facing interfaces. Treat peer code as context, not as a template to copy blindly: its assumptions may be specific to another device or kernel version.

Check the relevant MAINTAINERS entries and subsystem documentation early. They help identify the people and process associated with the code area, and can reveal subsystem-specific requirements that a general kernel guide does not cover.

Integrate with the driver model, not just module loading

At the model level, a driver registers with the appropriate kernel core or bus and provides a way to match devices it supports. When a matching device is bound, the framework calls the driver’s probe path. Probe is where target-specific code checks that the device is usable, establishes per-device state, initializes the hardware, and manages the resources needed to operate it.

Failure handling is part of that integration. If setup fails partway through, the driver must release resources it already acquired and leave the device in a safe state. The exact resources, registration calls, matching mechanism, and cleanup rules depend on the selected bus and subsystem; a generic probe function cannot responsibly specify them for an unnamed target.

Use this sequence to plan the implementation, then replace each item with the APIs and rules documented for your target:

  1. Match: describe which devices the driver supports using the mechanism expected by the bus or subsystem.
  2. Validate: in the framework’s binding path, confirm that the device and its required configuration are usable.
  3. Set up per-device state: create and associate the state needed for this particular device instance.
  4. Initialize: configure the hardware and connect it to its kernel subsystem using that subsystem’s interface.
  5. Unwind on error: if an operation fails, reverse completed setup steps and return an error rather than leaving partial state behind.

This is a design checklist, not compilable driver code. The target’s subsystem documentation should determine the actual registration and lifecycle implementation.

Test the hardware behavior, not only the build

A successful compile shows that the code built in that environment; it does not prove that the device binds correctly or behaves as intended. The kernel testing documentation describes a range of methods and tools, but which tests are available or appropriate depends on the driver and subsystem.

Plan tests around the selected device and the behavior it is meant to provide. Check the ordinary successful path, relevant error conditions, and what happens when setup cannot complete. Validate behavior on the target hardware where hardware interaction matters, and use subsystem guidance to identify any established test infrastructure. A style-clean patch and a successful build are useful checks, not substitutes for that validation.

Prepare a reviewable patch series

Kernel review is easier when each change is understandable on its own. The kernel’s guide to submitting patches puts it plainly: “each patch should make an easily understood change that can be verified by reviewers.” The guide’s exact process should be read alongside the current instructions for the subsystem receiving the driver.

Explain the problem and the impact

Describe what device or user problem the change addresses, who or what is affected, and why the proposed kernel integration is needed. Include enough implementation context for reviewers to understand the design without making them infer the motivation from the code.

Separate logical changes

Organize related work into a sequence of coherent patches rather than one large change that mixes unrelated concerns. Each patch should make a clear change that can be reviewed and checked. Follow the subsystem’s expectations for patch formatting, recipients, and submission method.

Run checks and identify reviewers

Use the kernel style checker as a guide, then address the relevant subsystem’s testing and review requirements. Identify maintainers and mailing-list recipients from the project’s maintainership information and subsystem documentation. Style checks can catch presentation issues; they do not establish that the hardware behavior is correct.

Respond to review with focused revisions

Review feedback is part of developing kernel code. Address comments against the relevant patch, keep revisions easy to follow, and explain design choices where the code alone does not make them clear. The subsystem’s current process notes take precedence over any general description of patch submission.

Use learning material with version awareness

The kernel documentation’s historical “Submitting Drivers For The Linux Kernel” page explicitly warns that it is old and may need updating or deletion. Its mention of Linux Device Drivers, Third Edition says the book covers Linux 2.6.10, so it should not be treated as a current API reference. For current implementation details, use the documentation for your target kernel and subsystem.
