A Java application that appears to restart every six seconds may be exiting and being relaunched, remaining alive but unresponsive, or getting stuck during shutdown. Those are different failure modes, and the interval alone does not identify the cause. Start by recording process IDs, timestamps, exit codes, logs, service-manager events, and the JVM build; then use thread evidence to decide whether bytecode inspection is relevant.
First determine what “restarting” means
Before decompiling anything, establish whether the same process is still running or a new JVM process is appearing. A supervisor can restart a process after it exits; a hung JVM may instead remain alive without making progress. A process caught in a CPU-intensive loop is a third possibility. “Death loop” is not a precise JVM state.
- Process exits and a new PID appears: investigate the exit code, application logs, service-manager events, and any restart policy.
- The PID remains but the application stops responding: check CPU use and capture thread evidence while the process is still alive.
- The process appears to be shutting down but does not finish: investigate shutdown hooks and threads that remain active.
Record timestamps alongside each PID, standard output and error, exit status, service-manager events, JVM vendor and version, and operating system. This can show whether the apparent six-second cadence is an application behavior or an external restart policy. The interval, runtime version, platform, exit code, and cause in this title have not been independently verified.
For a live process, distinguish a loop from a hang
CPU use is a useful diagnostic clue, not a verdict. Oracle’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking it: sustained high CPU points toward investigating a loop, while low or idle CPU can fit a hang such as a deadlock. Compare CPU use with observable application progress, and collect more than one thread dump if the behavior continues; changing stacks may show activity, while repeatedly unchanged stacks can help narrow the investigation.

On a live JVM, JDK 26 documents jcmd <pid> Thread.print to print thread stack traces. JDK documentation also describes Java Flight Recorder as a troubleshooting resource. Commands and options can vary with the JVM actually running the application, so check the target runtime’s available commands and record its exact build and platform. If a loop or exit path points to a class, inspect the deployed bytecode
Once logs or stacks identify a likely class and method, analyze the class file actually deployed—not just the source currently in a repository. The deployed artifact may differ from checked-in source. Preserve the original class or JAR and record its hash so another engineer can identify exactly what was examined.

- Identify the class and method implicated by the runtime evidence.
- Use the target JDK’s
javaputility to disassemble the deployed class.javap -c -pis a practical starting point for showing bytecode instructions, including non-public members; verify the flags in the target JDK’s javap manual. - Examine instructions, constants, branch targets, exception tables, and line-number metadata when present. These can help relate control flow to a suspected loop or exit path.
- If you use a third-party decompiler to make control flow easier to read, compare its output with the bytecode. A decompiler presents a reconstruction; it does not prove what the original source was or what the process was doing at runtime.
Java class files store method instructions in the Code attribute. The JVM specification’s description of the Code attribute explains the class-file structure. Disassembly can expose control-flow evidence, but it cannot by itself establish runtime state or explain why an external supervisor restarted a process. No particular decompiler, version, or decompilation output is established for this titled story.
If the evidence points to shutdown, check how it began and what is blocking it
Oracle’s Java Runtime API identifies several ways shutdown can begin: the last non-daemon thread exits, application code calls Runtime.exit or System.exit, or an external event such as an operating-system signal initiates shutdown. These paths leave different evidence, so check application code and logs as well as operating-system and service-manager records.

Shutdown hooks run concurrently, and shutdown does not complete normally until they terminate. Oracle warns that a hook that does not terminate—for example, because it is in an infinite loop—can prevent shutdown from completing. Hooks should be defensive, avoid deadlocks, and finish quickly; invoking exit from a shutdown hook can also prevent completion. See Oracle’s Java SE 26 Runtime API documentation.

A regular interval is a clue to measure, not proof of a timer, JVM defect, or particular code path. The process may be exiting and being relaunched under a policy, staying alive but hung, burning CPU in a loop, or failing to finish shutdown. The decisive evidence is the process timeline, exit status, logs, live thread state, and the identity of the deployed artifact. The available information does not verify an incident that recurs exactly every six seconds or establish a root cause.
