The iPhone 17 is the smaller, lighter choice, while the POCO X8 Pro Max offers a larger display, a much higher stated battery capacity and faster wired charging. There is no verified, current price gap that applies across markets: compare local prices for the same storage tier before deciding.

How much is the price difference?
A reliable current difference cannot be stated without a country, seller, date and matched storage configurations. Check the prices available to you for both models at the same time, and compare equivalent capacities where possible. The iPhone 17 is listed in 256GB and 512GB configurations by Apple; check which POCO capacities are sold in your market.
For context only, TechRadar reported a POCO X8 Pro Max starting price of $469 / £469 in an April 3, 2026 review (TechRadar’s review). The Associated Press reported an iPhone 17 US starting price of about $800 at launch in September 2025 (AP’s launch coverage). Those figures refer to different dates and sales contexts, so subtracting them would not produce a valid current price comparison.

Which phone has the larger screen, and which is easier to handle?
The POCO has the larger screen at 6.83 inches, compared with the iPhone’s 6.3 inches. Its 218g weight is also 41g more than the iPhone 17’s 177g. Choose the POCO if screen area matters more; choose the iPhone if you prefer a smaller, lighter handset. Both manufacturers specify refresh rates up to 120Hz, but refresh rate alone does not establish which display looks better.
Battery capacity and charging: what the specifications establish
Xiaomi lists an 8500mAh typical battery and 100W HyperCharge for the POCO X8 Pro Max. Apple’s cited iPhone 17 specification page does not provide a comparable mAh figure, so the stated capacities cannot be compared numerically. Capacity and charging wattage also do not establish which phone lasts longer in everyday use.

Xiaomi reports a lab result of 24 minutes to reach 50% on the POCO, starting at 1% with the 100W in-box charger, “Top speed” enabled, the display off and a test-room temperature of about 25°C. Charging time can differ with the charger, settings, temperature and usage; check whether the local retail box includes the adapter.
Camera hardware and protection
Camera configuration
Apple describes the iPhone 17 as having a 48MP Dual Fusion camera system. Xiaomi lists a 50MP main camera with optical image stabilization (OIS) and an 8MP ultrawide camera for the POCO. Megapixel counts and camera specifications do not show which phone takes better photos or video; the sources do not provide a same-method independent comparison.

Water resistance
Both phones carry an IP68 rating, but the cited water-test descriptions are not identical: Apple specifies up to 6m for 30 minutes under IEC 60529, while Xiaomi describes static freshwater testing up to 2m for 30 minutes. Treat these as manufacturer claims under their stated conditions, not a guarantee against water damage in every situation. Xiaomi says resistance is limited to tested conditions.
Performance, software and market checks
The iPhone 17 uses Apple’s A19 chip; Xiaomi lists a Dimensity 9500s for the POCO. Xiaomi also reports an AnTuTu score of 3,085,998 from its internal lab using AnTuTu V11.0.5 at about 25°C, while noting that results vary with conditions. Without a comparable iPhone result using the same benchmark version and test method, that number does not determine which phone is faster in practice. The available sources also do not establish a head-to-head verdict for sustained performance, gaming, battery endurance or software-support duration.

Which phone should you buy?
Choose the iPhone 17 if
- You want the smaller and lighter device: 6.3 inches and 177g.
- You prefer iOS or specifically want Apple’s listed features, including Always-On display and Dynamic Island.
- You are choosing between Apple’s listed 256GB and 512GB models and have confirmed the local price and terms.
Choose the POCO X8 Pro Max if
- You prefer a larger 6.83-inch screen and do not mind a 218g phone.
- The stated 8500mAh typical battery capacity and 100W charging specifications suit your priorities.
- You have checked the local price, configuration, charger-in-box details and regional eSIM availability.
For camera quality, real-world battery life, gaming or sustained speed, look for independent comparisons that test both phones under the same conditions. For price, the deciding evidence is the current offer in your country for the configurations you would actually buy.
