In Power BI, a relationship connects columns in different tables and determines how filters travel between them. A sound model usually pairs dimension tables, which help users filter and group data, with fact tables, which hold values to summarize. To diagnose an unexpected visual, check the tables’ roles and grain, relationship keys and cardinality, filter direction, and whether the intended path is active.
What a relationship does in a Power BI model
A relationship is more than a line between tables: it establishes a filter-propagation path. When a report visual uses fields from related tables, that path determines which rows are included in the calculation. If the path is missing, ambiguous, or based on unsuitable keys, a visual can return results that do not match the question being asked.
In a common star schema, dimension tables describe entities such as dates, products, or customers. They support filtering and grouping. Fact tables record events or transactions and contain values to summarize. Microsoft describes the dimension role this way: “Dimension tables enable filtering and grouping.” Microsoft’s star-schema guidance explains these roles and why a consistent fact-table grain matters.
Grain means what one row in a fact table represents—for example, one order line or one daily product total. Keep that meaning consistent within the table. Combining rows at different grains can make a measure difficult to interpret, even when relationships are configured correctly.

How to create and inspect relationships
Power BI Desktop may detect relationships when you load tables, but detection is a starting point, not a guarantee that the model matches your reporting logic. Inspect the columns used as keys and verify that the intended relationship reflects the data. You can create or edit relationships in Power BI Desktop; see Microsoft’s current create-and-manage-relationships documentation for the interface workflow, which may change over time.
- Open Model view. Review the table diagram and locate the line between the tables. Microsoft documents the view at Model view in Power BI Desktop.
- Check the columns at each end. Confirm that they represent the same kind of key and that values match as intended. A relationship between columns with different meanings or incompatible values will not create the intended filter path.
- Check uniqueness and repeats. For a one-to-many relationship, the one-side key must be unique. If duplicates appear on a column that must be unique, refresh can fail.
- Read the relationship indicators. In Model view, the line indicates cardinality and arrowheads indicate filter direction. Confirm they reflect the intended relationship rather than changing settings to make a visual appear plausible.
- Check active status and the filter path. When more than one relationship is available, determine which is active for normal reporting and whether another path could make filtering ambiguous.
For a fuller explanation of relationship behavior and indicators, see Microsoft’s relationship concepts documentation.

What cardinality means
Cardinality describes whether the values on each side of a relationship are unique or repeated. The right choice depends on the actual data, not on which setting seems likely to fix a report.
| Cardinality | What it means | Typical modelling implication |
|---|---|---|
| One-to-many | Values are unique on one side and may repeat on the other. | Commonly connects a dimension’s unique key to a fact table’s repeated foreign key. |
| Many-to-one | The same uniqueness pattern as one-to-many, viewed from the opposite table. | Often describes the fact-to-dimension side of the same connection. |
| One-to-one | Values are unique on both sides. | Use only when the data genuinely has a one-to-one correspondence. |
| Many-to-many | Values may repeat on both sides. | Can support particular data patterns, but needs deliberate design and validation. |
The one-to-many pattern is common because a dimension key identifies one entity while the corresponding value can appear in many fact rows. If that supposedly unique dimension key contains duplicates, resolve the data or modelling issue rather than treating the relationship setting as a substitute for a valid key.

When to use a many-to-many relationship
A many-to-many relationship can be appropriate when both related columns contain repeated values and the reporting requirement genuinely calls for that connection. It also changes how the model evaluates relationships, so it should not be chosen just because creating a one-to-many relationship is inconvenient.
Consider whether a bridge table makes the relationship logic clearer. A bridge represents the associations between the entities and can make the route through the model easier to understand. Microsoft’s many-to-many relationship guidance covers these patterns and relevant integrity concerns. In some limited-relationship scenarios, integrity issues can cause rows to be omitted; validate that the result represents the intended data.

Should cross-filter direction be single or both?
Cross-filter direction determines which way a filter can travel through a relationship. Single-direction filtering is common and helps make the route through a model easier to reason about. Bidirectional filtering allows filters to flow both ways and can meet a specific reporting need, but it is not a general remedy for incorrect totals.
Enabling bidirectional filtering can affect performance or introduce ambiguous paths. That risk matters particularly when a model has multiple fact tables connected through shared dimensions: allowing filters to travel both ways may leave more than one route between tables. Use it only when you can identify the report requirement it satisfies and confirm that the resulting path is unambiguous. See Microsoft’s guidance on bidirectional relationships.

Active and inactive relationships
An active relationship supplies the default filter path for reporting. An inactive relationship remains available for specific calculations, but it does not replace the active path automatically. Where tables have multiple potential connections, decide which one should be the default and keep the model’s filter paths deterministic. For details on the distinction and its use, consult Microsoft’s active-versus-inactive relationship guidance.
A practical way to investigate an unexpected visual
There is no single fix for every incorrect total: the cause may be the data, the model, the filter route, or the calculation. Work through the model before changing filter direction.
Quick Recap
- Confirm what each row represents. Check that fact-table grain is consistent and that the measure summarizes the intended rows.
- Verify the relationship keys. Ensure the columns refer to the same entity or key, and inspect whether the one-side column is actually unique.
- Confirm cardinality. Compare the real uniqueness and repetition patterns with the relationship setting.
- Trace filter direction. Follow the arrowheads in Model view and check whether the fields in the visual can filter the relevant fact rows along that route.
- Check active status and alternative paths. Establish which relationship Power BI uses by default and whether another connection could produce ambiguity.
- Choose a modelling change only for a demonstrated need. Depending on the data, that might mean correcting a key, clarifying the model with a bridge, changing the intended active path, or enabling bidirectional filtering for a specific requirement.
- Recheck the visual against the intended result. Test representative filters and values so the change fixes the reporting logic rather than merely changing the displayed number.
