Keep Windows 11 Widgets if their glanceable cards are useful; hide the taskbar button or tune the board if its content distracts you. Turning off the taskbar button only removes that entry point—it does not disable the Widgets board, which you can still open with Windows+W or, on supported devices, a side swipe.
What Windows 11 Widgets do
Widgets is a customizable collection of cards that gives quick access to apps and services. Cards can show information such as weather, sports, stocks, local news and breaking headlines. Whether that is useful depends on the cards you want and how often you check them; Microsoft’s feature guidance does not establish a general productivity benefit.
The choice is not limited to keeping the taskbar button or removing Widgets altogether. You can keep the board and adjust its cards, feed and notifications, or hide the taskbar button while leaving the board accessible.
Choose based on what bothers you

Hide or restore the taskbar button
- Right-click an empty area of the taskbar and select Taskbar settings.
- Under Taskbar items, switch Widgets off to hide the button, or on to restore it.
- To open the board while the button is hidden, press Windows+W.
This setting changes the taskbar entry point; it does not completely disable the board. Microsoft also documents side-swipe access on supported devices.

Reduce content and interruptions without removing Widgets
Open the Widgets board and review its settings. You can turn off the Discover dashboard under Dashboards, adjust notification badges and dashboard notifications, and remove or rearrange individual cards. These options are useful when you want a particular card, such as weather, but do not want the feed or notifications that come with the board.
Understand privacy by checking each widget
Widgets does not have a single privacy setting that covers every card. In a card’s More menu, check its Powered by label: the app or service behind that widget controls its widget-specific privacy settings.

- Microsoft-account data used to personalize the board can be reviewed in the Microsoft privacy dashboard.
- Windows diagnostic data is managed separately through Windows diagnostic-data settings.
- Microsoft says location estimation may use Windows Location when enabled; otherwise, it may use the connection’s IP address.

Lock-screen widgets are a separate setting
If your concern is information appearing on the lock screen, change the Widgets option in lock-screen settings. That setting is separate from the taskbar button and the Widgets board. Microsoft’s lock-screen instructions cover the separate control.

If Widgets is not working properly
Microsoft says Widgets and Discover need current versions of the Windows Web Experience Pack and Start Experiences App to work as expected, and that these components should update automatically. If the board or feed is malfunctioning, check that the relevant components are current before concluding that hiding the taskbar button will fix the issue.
