Khan Academy: a broad, structured introduction
Khan Academy’s Intro to SQL unit covers storing, querying, and changing data. Its topics range from SQL basics and creating tables to filtering, aggregation, subqueries, joins, query planning, and optimization. Challenges and projects include designing a store database and working with related tables, making it a good choice if you want lessons alongside applied practice.
SQLBolt: short lessons you can work through in a browser
SQLBolt’s interactive lessons start with SELECT queries and move through filtering, sorting, joins, NULL, expressions, aggregation, and changing or creating tables. An intermediate section adds subqueries and set operations. It suits learners who want to start writing queries quickly, with one qualification: database implementations can differ in extra features and storage types, as SQLBolt notes.
SQLZoo: varied tutorials and exercises
SQLZoo’s tutorial offers step-by-step work with SELECT, pattern matching, World and Nobel datasets, nested queries, SUM and COUNT, joins, NULL, numeric examples, and window functions. It names MySQL, Oracle, SQL Server, DB2, Postgres, and SQLite. Treat those examples as practice across different systems, not a guarantee that every lesson behaves identically on every database.

Microsoft Learn: choose it for Transact-SQL
Microsoft Learn’s Query and modify data with Transact-SQL path is listed as a beginner path with six modules and a displayed estimate of 5 hours 45 minutes. That figure is Microsoft’s estimate, not a promised completion time. The path expects familiarity with tables or spreadsheet data and focuses on querying with Transact-SQL, so it is most relevant if your goal is SQL Server or Azure SQL rather than a platform-neutral foundation.
Microsoft describes T-SQL as its implementation of the SQL standard. Its T-SQL writing tutorial calls itself a brief introduction, not a substitute for a T-SQL class. For a wider introduction before specializing, use Khan Academy, SQLBolt, or SQLZoo alongside the Microsoft path.

What “free course” does—and does not—tell you
A free course and a free certificate are separate claims. The reviewed pages document lessons, tutorials, exercises, or training modules, but do not consistently establish current account requirements, regional conditions, premium features, or certificate policies. Khan Academy states a free-education mission, but that alone does not confirm that a certificate is available for this unit. Before enrolling, check the current course or enrollment page for any access requirements and, if credentials matter to you, confirm whether a certificate is offered and whether it carries a fee.

- Build the foundation: Work through Khan Academy for a wide introduction, or choose SQLBolt if you prefer compact browser exercises.
- Get more practice: Use SQLZoo’s varied datasets and question types to revisit queries and encounter different examples.
- Specialize when needed: Add Microsoft Learn if you expect to work with SQL Server or Azure SQL and want to learn Transact-SQL.
