Market-cap weighting gives the largest companies the greatest influence on an index’s returns. When those companies outperform, their larger weights can lift the index more; when they lag or fall, they can drag it down more. The method reflects companies’ relative market values, but it does not predict which stocks will perform best.
How market-cap weighting works
An index first defines which securities are eligible and which ones to include. Weighting is a separate decision: it determines how much each selected constituent contributes to the index’s movement. In a market-cap-weighted index, each company’s weight is proportional to its market capitalization relative to the combined market capitalization of the index’s constituents. As a company’s market value changes relative to the others, its weight changes under the index rules.
Some indexes use float-adjusted market capitalization instead of counting all outstanding shares. Float adjustment excludes shares not generally available for public trading, such as certain controlling or insider holdings, so the weighting reflects investable public float more closely. It changes the measure of company size used for weighting; it is not the same as equal weighting. S&P Dow Jones Indices explains these approaches in its Methodology Matters overview.
How the weighting rule changes performance
An index’s return is an aggregation of its constituents’ movements, with each constituent’s weight determining its influence. If the largest companies rise faster than the rest, their large weights can help a cap-weighted index outperform an equal-weighted version of the same universe. If those leaders fall sharply or lag, their weights can have the opposite effect. The result depends on which constituents lead, the period measured and the return series used—not on the weighting formula alone.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Because rising market values increase relative weights, successful large companies can become more influential without the index routinely resetting all holdings to equal weights. This lets the index reflect the market value of its constituents, but can also make performance more dependent on a small group of large companies.
What equal weighting changes
An equal-weighted index assigns the same target weight to each constituent at a designated rebalance. Between rebalances, prices cause weights to drift; the next rebalance restores the targets. In the S&P 500 Equal Weight Index, that reset occurs quarterly, according to S&P Dow Jones Indices’ index overview and FAQ.

Rebalancing typically reduces the weights of relative winners and adds weight to relative laggards. S&P DJI describes this as an anti-momentum or contrarian feature. Equal weighting also raises the relative weight of smaller constituents compared with a cap-weighted version of the same index, and may produce different sector and factor exposures. It reduces the dominance of the largest stocks, but that does not make it universally more diversified or a guaranteed performance improvement.
Cap-weighted and equal-weighted indexes compared
| Feature | Market-cap or float-adjusted cap weight | Equal weight |
|---|---|---|
| Starting weights | Proportional to market value; float-adjusted designs use investable public float. | Equal for all constituents at the specified rebalance. |
| Influence of the largest companies | Grows with their relative market capitalization. | Targeted to match other constituents at rebalance; weights drift between resets. |
| Relative exposure to smaller companies | Smaller companies generally receive lower weights than larger ones. | Higher than in a cap-weighted version of the same universe. |
| Weight maintenance | Weights change with prices and corporate actions under index rules. | Periodic rebalancing restores equal targets; the S&P 500 Equal Weight Index resets quarterly. |
| Main trade-off | Reflects aggregate market value, but may concentrate influence in the largest constituents. | Limits single-stock dominance at rebalance, while introducing size, value, anti-momentum, sector and trading effects. |
What the S&P 500 concentration statistic shows
For the S&P 500, S&P Dow Jones Indices reported an unweighted average constituent market capitalization of USD 96.3 billion and an index-weighted average of USD 998.6 billion, using data as of June 28, 2024. The first is the average market capitalization when constituents count equally; the second gives more influence to companies with larger index weights. The comparison illustrates how strongly cap weighting emphasizes large companies. It is not an index-return figure or a current 2026 concentration reading. See S&P DJI’s “Worth the Weight,” published July 9, 2024.

Has the S&P 500 Equal Weight Index outperformed historically?
S&P DJI’s FAQ discusses the S&P 500 Equal Weight Index’s performance over its own live history and reports historical outperformance relative to the S&P 500, while noting that the gap varies by timeframe and market conditions. That is provider analysis of those index series—not a guarantee, a claim about every period, or a conclusion that equal weighting always wins. For any comparison, check that the indexes cover the same universe and compare the same return type, currency and measurement dates.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to check when comparing index performance
- Universe: Confirm that both indexes hold the same or a clearly comparable set of constituents.
- Weighting and rebalance rules: Check whether weights use total or float-adjusted market capitalization, or equal targets, and how often any equal-weight reset occurs.
- Return basis: Distinguish price returns from total returns, which account for dividends under the relevant index methodology.
- Dates and currency: Use the same start and end dates and the same currency; different windows can change which weighting method appears ahead.
- Index versus investment: An index is a benchmark, not a fund. For an investable fund comparison, also examine fees, tracking differences, taxes and fund structure; the index-methodology sources cited here do not establish a current like-for-like fund comparison.
Market-cap weighting is not the only way to manage concentration. S&P DJI’s U.S. index methodology also describes capped market-cap indexes, which constrain individual or group weights while retaining market-cap-based weighting. The appropriate comparison depends on whether the priority is representing aggregate market value, reducing large-stock dominance, or obtaining a particular set of size, sector and factor exposures. See the S&P U.S. Indices Methodology. MSCI also describes equal-weight indexes as allocating equally to the securities in a parent index and discusses their smaller-company and concentration objectives in its Equal Weighted Indexes overview.
