A platform-mediated check can let an app receive an age range or supervision signal instead of a birth date, while an app-level check may use the service’s own account information, age estimation, or a verification provider. What is shared, who must act on it, and whether a check is required depend on the platform, device, location, and circumstances.
Age rating is not age verification
An age rating describes an app’s content or capabilities. An age check concerns the person using or accessing it. Apple says App Store ratings reflect the presence and frequency of sensitive content and app capabilities; its iOS 26 global rating categories are 4+, 9+, 13+, 16+, and 18+. A rating does not establish the downloader’s age. An app rated 18+ may still need to check a user’s age where local law requires it.
“Age check” can also describe methods that provide different levels of evidence. A person may declare an age, a system may infer or estimate one, or a check may use a credential or other evidence. An age range is an intentionally broad result, not a date of birth. These terms are not interchangeable, and a platform’s use of an age signal does not necessarily mean it verified a person’s identity.
What the two approaches share with an app
| Question | App-store or operating-system signal | App-based check |
|---|---|---|
| Who supplies the check? | The platform provides a signal or parental-approval feature for eligible situations. | The service chooses and operates its own method, or uses a provider. |
| What may the app learn? | Depending on platform and legal context, an age band or category and related signals—not necessarily a birth date. | Information or estimates used by that service; an escalated flow may request stronger evidence. |
| Where does it work? | Availability can depend on device, account, region, legal trigger, and family settings. | Availability and method depend on the service’s implementation and geography. |
| Who remains accountable? | The developer still has to decide how to comply with age restrictions and use the signal. | The service is responsible for its selected check and how it handles its result. |
The table describes broad approaches, not a universal data flow. Platform documentation and service deployments change, and the materials available do not establish a head-to-head comparison of accuracy, privacy harms, or safety outcomes.

How Apple’s age-range sharing works
Apple’s Declared Age Range API is available worldwide, but the information provided and whether sharing is optional depend on the circumstances. Apple’s developer FAQ says that in certain regions where legally required, the API can return the age band or category required by law, along with information such as the method used to confirm that category, parental-controls status, and eligibility for age-gated features. In other contexts, sharing is optional for adults and teens outside Family Sharing; parents or guardians control whether children share.
Apple’s WWDC25 presentation describes a range-based flow: an app asks for relevant age cutoffs, and the framework returns an age range rather than the user’s birth date. For example, in the presentation, a 14-year-old sharing against cutoffs of 13 and 16 receives the 13–15 range. A user or parent can decline to share. Apple Engineering Manager Austin described the intent as keeping the birth date private and revealing only what is needed for the appropriate experience. That explanation concerns the range-sharing flow and should not be generalized to every legally required age-check process.
Apple identifies iOS/iPadOS 26.2 SDKs and Xcode 26.2 or later for the currently listed regional assurance technologies; some API features are described as available as of iOS/iPadOS 26.4. These are implementation requirements in Apple’s developer documentation, not a promise that every device or app supports every signal. Developers should check Apple’s current Declared Age Range API documentation for updated requirements.

What Google Play’s age signals provide
Google Play says some U.S. states have enacted laws requiring app-store age verification, parental approval, and the passing of user age information to developers. Google describes its Play Age Signals API as a beta for eligible users in applicable states. Depending on the case, signals may include age ranges, age-verification or supervision status, and other applicable information. Google also describes Play Console reporting related to significant changes and parental revocation status, along with requirements for handling API data.

Google says use of the API is not itself mandated by Play. Its guidance states that developers are responsible for determining how laws apply to their app and whether and how to use the features. The signal is therefore a tool for a developer’s compliance process, not a transfer of that responsibility to Google.
How an app-level check can differ
An individual service can use details tied to its own account, infer likely age from activity or profile information, or ask for more evidence. Those options raise service-specific questions: what information is analyzed, when an estimate triggers escalation, what a user must provide, and how the service handles the result.

Meta’s May 5, 2026 announcement describes analyzing profile text such as birthday celebrations or school-grade references, and adding visual analysis of images and video for age-related cues in select countries. Meta says this is not facial recognition. It also says that if an account appears to misrepresent its age during an age change, it may require an ID or Yoti facial age estimation. These are Meta’s descriptions of its own methods, not an independent audit of accuracy or effectiveness. Meta says it prefers app-store verification as a policy approach; that preference is not evidence that either model produces better safety outcomes.
Which approach is better for privacy and safety?
A platform-mediated signal can reduce repeated disclosure if an app only needs an age band or an eligibility signal rather than a birth date or identity document. Apple’s range-sharing explanation is a concrete example of data minimization by design. It does not mean the app learns nothing: it may receive an age category and related information, and legally required flows may differ from the optional range-sharing example.

Neither mechanism alone guarantees a safe experience. A useful signal has to be interpreted correctly, used only as permitted, and paired with age-appropriate product design, effective reporting and moderation, and parental controls where appropriate. A check can also misclassify someone or fail to produce a usable result; the cited materials do not quantify how often these situations occur.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Who checks a child’s age—and who approves access?
Responsibility is shared but not interchangeable. A platform may provide the age signal and parental-approval workflow; the app developer decides how to use that information and remains responsible for applicable age restrictions. Google explicitly assigns developers the task of determining their legal obligations. Apple likewise says developers remain responsible for their own age restrictions and required access blocking.
Parental approval can refer to different actions. Apple PermissionKit and Google Play features address approval in certain contexts, such as downloads, purchases, or significant changes. Approval to install or buy something is not automatically the same as approval for continued access, and parental-control status is not itself proof that every user is correctly aged. App-level services may also create their own approval flows.

What if the check is unavailable or refused?
Platform coverage is conditional, so an app may encounter an unsupported device or account, an unavailable signal, a user or parent who declines to share, or a result that does not resolve the service’s requirements. An app-based estimate may likewise be uncertain or lead to an escalation request. The cited platform and company materials do not establish one universal fallback for these cases.
For a child or parent, the practical questions are whether the app explains why it needs the information, what alternatives exist if a check fails, and whether access is limited while the result is unresolved. For developers, fallback behavior should be designed for missing, refused, or conflicting signals rather than assuming every user will receive a definitive answer. Requirements can differ by jurisdiction, device, and account setup.
Legal requirements can change quickly
Texas illustrates why status needs a date. Apple’s December 23, 2025 notice said a district-court preliminary injunction had suspended enforcement of Texas SB2420 and that Apple was pausing previously announced plans. Google’s current developer guidance says an appeals court stayed that injunction and SB2420 is in effect. These are dated platform accounts of a changing legal situation, not a substitute for the statute or legal advice. Families and developers should check current local requirements and platform documentation rather than rely on an older announcement.
For additional context, Meta said in its May 2026 announcement that 88% of U.S. parents support app-store or operating-system-level age verification and parental approval. Meta’s announcement does not identify the survey organization or provide sample, field dates, question wording, or methodology, so that figure should be read as Meta’s reported result, not as an independently verified national estimate.
