For a compact Raspberry Pi Compute Module build, choose the carrier for the module generation and the I/O you need: the Waveshare CM5-IO-BASE-B is a documented small-footprint option for CM5, while Seeed’s dual-Gigabit carrier is aimed at CM4 router builds. For development and broad connector access, Raspberry Pi’s CM5 IO Board is the more expansive choice, not the smallest. A Compute Module needs a compatible carrier to expose its interfaces, and the carrier may not include the module, power supply, storage, or cooling.

Which carrier board fits a compact Linux project?

These boards serve different builds rather than forming a simple performance ranking. Compare module compatibility, footprint, and the connectors your project actually needs.

Carrier Module generation and purpose Published dimensions Notable I/O
Raspberry Pi Compute Module 5 IO Board (CM5IO) CM5; development and integration 160 × 90 mm (Raspberry Pi product specification, accessed 2026) 40-pin GPIO, Gigabit Ethernet with PoE+ HAT+ support, two USB 3 sockets; documentation also lists HDMI, camera/display, PCIe M.2, RTC, and fan expansion
Waveshare CM5-IO-BASE-B CM5; compact general-purpose carrier 85 × 56 mm (Waveshare product specification, accessed 2026) Gigabit Ethernet, M.2 M-key socket, 40-pin GPIO, two USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A, two USB 2.0, dual MIPI, HDMI outputs, microSD slot for Lite variants, and fan support
Seeed dual-Gigabit CM4 carrier CM4; focused router or networking build 75 × 64 × 21 mm (Seeed documentation, accessed 2026) Dual Gigabit Ethernet and dual USB 3.0; USB-C 5 V/3 A input

Dimensions describe different board types and generations. The Seeed figure includes a third measurement, while the other two are listed as board length and width; do not treat these numbers as a like-for-like size or performance score.

What each board is best suited for

Raspberry Pi CM5IO: development access and connector breadth

Raspberry Pi describes CM5IO as a starting point for integrating CM5 into products and as an alternative form factor for industrial applications. Its broad breakout makes it useful when you need access to multiple interfaces during development or integration. The trade-off is board area: at 160 × 90 mm, it is not the footprint-first option. Raspberry Pi’s documentation notes that production designs can instead use a smaller custom carrier with only the connectors required for the use case. Raspberry Pi Compute Module documentation and the CM5 IO Board product page list its features.

Waveshare CM5-IO-BASE-B: compact CM5 builds

Waveshare lists the CM5-IO-BASE-B at 85 × 56 mm and specifies compatibility with CM5 variants. Its vendor-listed connectors include Ethernet, USB, HDMI, GPIO, and dual MIPI connections, with an M.2 M-key socket for 2230/2242 modules. It also lists microSD for Lite variants and fan support. These are product specifications, not independent tests; confirm the current board revision, module variant, and package contents against the Waveshare product page before designing an enclosure or selecting an expansion card.

Seeed dual-Gigabit CM4 carrier: compact networking

Seeed positions this carrier as a minimal board for soft-router applications. Dual Gigabit Ethernet and dual USB 3.0 make it the focused option here when the project needs two network ports and uses CM4. The documentation lists a 75 × 64 × 21 mm size, USB-C 5 V/3 A input, and a requirement for a CM4 heatsink. It is not a general CM5 alternative. Check the exact CM4 variant and build requirements in Seeed’s carrier documentation.

Check compatibility before choosing a carrier

Start with the exact Compute Module generation and variant, not just the connector layout. CM4 and CM5 share some form-factor characteristics, but that does not establish that every CM4 carrier supports CM5 or that supported functionality will be identical. Confirm compatibility for the specific board and module revision in the manufacturer’s documentation. Raspberry Pi’s Compute Module documentation and CM5 datasheet provide the relevant generation-specific information.

Also account for the module variant. For example, Raspberry Pi lists a microSD socket on CM5IO for CM5 Lite, and Waveshare lists microSD support for Lite variants. Do not assume that a socket or feature works the same way with every module configuration.

Plan the complete build, not just the board

  • Module: Check whether the carrier listing includes a Compute Module or sells the carrier alone. The product category and specifications do not, by themselves, establish bundle contents.
  • Power: Match the supply and input method to the exact carrier. Seeed specifies USB-C 5 V/3 A for its dual-Gigabit CM4 board; do not generalize that input requirement to the other boards.
  • Cooling and enclosure: Seeed says a CM4 heatsink is required. For other combinations, verify cooling clearance and mounting against the exact board revision and case before purchase.
  • Storage and expansion: An M.2 socket does not guarantee compatibility with every drive. Check the carrier’s stated socket, supported module length, interface, and power requirements; Waveshare lists 2230/2242 M.2 modules for its M-key socket.
  • Connectors: Count the ports your project must expose, including camera/display interfaces and GPIO. A smaller board can still be the wrong choice if it omits a required connector.

How to choose

  1. Identify the module: Decide whether the build uses CM4 or CM5, and note the exact module variant.
  2. Set the footprint limit: Compare the manufacturer’s dimensions with the space available in the enclosure, allowing room for connectors, cables, and cooling.
  3. List required interfaces: Choose broad development access with CM5IO, compact CM5 I/O with Waveshare, or dual-network CM4 connectivity with Seeed only if that interface set suits the project.
  4. Verify the full bill of materials: Confirm module, power supply, cooling, storage, enclosure, and bundle contents for the exact SKU and revision.
  5. Validate expansions: Check the carrier documentation for the specific M.2 device or other expansion hardware before relying on it in the design.
