The TinyLoadr Shield is a historical Arduino-based in-system programmer for compatible AVR microcontrollers. Its documented workflow has two routes: place a supported DIP chip in the shield’s ZIF socket, or connect the shield to an AVR already installed on a board through that board’s ICSP header. In either case, chip compatibility, wiring, voltage, and Arduino software settings must match the hardware.

What the TinyLoadr Shield is—and what it is not

Maker Jeff Murchison first called the Arduino-based programming shield the ArduinoISP Deluxe Shield, then renamed it TinyLoadr Shield to avoid using “Arduino” in the product name. A later product called the TinyLoadr AVR Programmer was a separate, standalone USB programmer: it did not require an Arduino board. The maker’s 2014 announcement described that standalone design with a USB connector, a 28-pin ZIF socket, 6- and 10-pin ICSP headers, a 16 MHz clock source, a blink LED, and the ability to supply 5 V to a target board. Those are design details from the announcement, not confirmation of current stock.

The TinyLoadr Shield documentation describes programming compatible DIP AVRs directly in its socket and programming mounted AVRs over ICSP. It does not establish that every AVR package or every board is compatible. The available documentation also does not establish that the historical shield is currently sold.

  • 14-pin ATtiny24, ATtiny44, and ATtiny84
  • 8-pin ATtiny12, ATtiny13, ATtiny15, ATtiny25, ATtiny45, and ATtiny85
  • 20-pin ATtiny2313 and ATtiny4313
  • 28-pin ATmega8, ATmega48, ATmega88, ATmega168, and ATmega328

These are documented family and pin-count groupings, not a guarantee for every chip revision. Confirm that the exact chip, package, and TinyLoadr revision are compatible before applying power.

Program an AVR already mounted on a board

Use the target board’s 6- or 10-pin ICSP header, connecting it to the TinyLoadr with the matching ribbon cable or jumper wires. The guide says these cables and wires are not included. Match the cable to the header’s pinout and pin-1 marking; do not assume that all ribbon cables use the same orientation.

Set up the shield safely

For the ZIF socket

  1. With power disconnected, set the microcontroller-select jumper to the family matching your chip.
  2. Place the chip in the socket with pin 1 in the left-most contacts. The package’s dot or half-circle should face left, as shown in the guide.
  3. Check both the jumper selection and chip orientation before connecting or powering the programmer. The guide warns that a wrong selection or orientation may damage the chip or programmer.

For a target board’s ICSP header

  1. Identify the target board’s ICSP pinout and pin-1 mark.
  2. Connect a suitable 6- or 10-pin cable, or jumper wires, matching signal positions and orientation. Verify the cable itself rather than relying on its connector shape.
  3. Check the target’s voltage and power arrangement before connecting. The documented TinyLoadr uses 5 V logic and supplies 5 V to the target; available current depends on the USB port. Do not use this arrangement with a target that is not compatible with 5 V unless you have a suitable, verified level- and power-management solution.

Configure the Arduino IDE, core, and upload method

The shield guide was written for older Arduino IDE generations, so menu labels and setup details may differ in a current installation. Its instructions say to select the matching board definition and choose “USBtinyISP” from the programmer menu, then use “Upload Using Programmer” to write a sketch. The exact board and programmer choices depend on the chip and installed software.

ATtiny programming also requires a compatible hardware core, which supplies device definitions and pin mappings. Pin mappings can differ among cores, so a sketch written for one core may not address the same physical pins under another. MCUdude’s TinyCore documentation covers listed classic ATtiny families and Arduino IDE 1.8, Arduino IDE 2.x, and PlatformIO. It advises selecting the target microcontroller and clock, connecting an ISP programmer, choosing the correct programmer, and using Burn Bootloader when setting fuses and installing the selected bootloader. TinyCore’s support is not a blanket compatibility guarantee for every AVR or TinyLoadr revision.

Bootloader and fuse choices

A bootloader is not required for a sketch uploaded through an ISP programmer. The guide notes that programming this way may overwrite a bootloader already on the chip. Burning a bootloader is relevant when you need to set fuses or install the selected bootloader for a later workflow; the right settings depend on the chip, clock, and intended upload method. Do not treat “Burn Bootloader” as a universal prerequisite for ISP programming.

What to check if programming fails

  • Socket chip is not recognized: Recheck the exact chip and package against the shield revision, then verify the family jumper and pin-1 orientation.
  • Target-board connection fails: Confirm the ICSP pinout, cable orientation, and pin-1 alignment. Try jumper wires only when you can match each signal correctly.
  • IDE reports a programmer or device error: Check that the board definition, core, selected programmer, target device, and clock settings agree. The old guide’s “USBtinyISP” label may not match every current software setup.
  • Target resets, behaves erratically, or does not power safely: Stop and verify whether the target expects 5 V, how it is powered, and whether the USB source can supply the required current. The shield’s 5 V output is not evidence that every target can safely use it.
