Start by identifying the exact board model and revision—not just its Allwinner H618 chip. Choose an Armbian image listed for that board, then use Armbian Imager to write it to a microSD card and verify the write before booting. An image for one H618 board is not automatically suitable for another.
Identify the exact board before choosing an image
H618 names a system-on-chip family; it does not identify the board’s layout, boot configuration, or software support. Read the model and revision printed on your board, then match that name to Armbian’s board list or download page. Armbian’s guidance is to select supported hardware rather than a board that merely looks similar: Armbian getting started and image selection.
Orange Pi Zero 3 is one specific H618 example
The Orange Pi Zero 3 manual identifies it as an Allwinner H618 board, and Armbian’s board configuration has a specific entry named “Orange Pi Zero3” with the identifier orangepizero3. That configuration includes current and edge kernel targets, but it does not establish that every H618 board or revision has an official ready-to-download image. See the Orange Pi Zero 3 manual and Armbian’s Orange Pi Zero 3 board configuration.

If your exact board is not listed
Do not substitute an image for another H616 or H618 board based on the chip name alone. Check the current Armbian support and boot instructions for your exact model and revision. If Armbian does not list it, use the board maker’s instructions or another confirmed board-specific support source rather than guessing.

Choose the image type that fits your use
Only choose among images actually offered for your exact board. Armbian’s descriptions below are general distinctions; kernel and hardware support vary by board family.
| Choice | What it means | When it makes sense |
|---|---|---|
| Ubuntu or Debian | Armbian supports both; its guidance recommends Ubuntu if you have no special preference or requirement. | Choose the distribution you prefer or need for your software. |
| Minimal | Lightweight command-line system with a bare minimum of packages and no graphical environment. | For a lean headless setup where you will add only what you need. |
| Server | Command-line image with standard utilities and no graphical environment. | For typical headless services and administration. |
| Desktop | Full graphical environment. | When you want to use the board with a monitor, keyboard, and mouse as a desktop system. |
| Current | Follows the latest Linux mainline LTS kernel. | Usually the best starting point when offered for your board. |
| Vendor | Uses a vendor-provided kernel, which may offer broader hardware support but can have older package versions and fewer general fixes. | When a device or feature you need is better supported by that kernel on your exact board. |
| Edge | Development/latest kernel line; automatically tested, but may break. | For experienced users or testing, not a low-maintenance production setup. |
| Legacy | Older stable kernel. | When current is unavailable or a device you need does not work on current. |
Use Armbian’s live image-selection guidance to confirm what is available now. Image offerings and support can change; do not infer that a feature working on one H618 board will work on yours.

Download and check the image
The straightforward route is to let Armbian Imager select and download the image for your board. If you download manually, verify that the displayed board name matches your hardware before writing the file. Armbian provides compressed .img.xz images and may provide .sha and .asc files. A SHA-256 check helps detect a corrupted or incomplete download; GPG signature verification can authenticate the published image. Filenames, checksums, and key instructions can change, so follow the steps on the live official page rather than copying old commands. See Armbian image selection.
Choose a suitable microSD card and power supply
Armbian’s general SD-card guidance recommends a reputable card rated A1 or A2, at least UHS-I U3/V30, and 32 GB or larger. These are general recommendations, not a verified minimum requirement for every H618 board. Armbian notes that A2 is not slower or less supported than A1 when command queuing is unused. For continuous logging or other write-heavy workloads, it recommends a high-endurance card intended for dashcams or CCTV. Details are in the Armbian SD-card guide.

Use a power supply that meets the board manufacturer’s requirements. If a new or suspicious card may have less capacity than advertised or storage errors, Armbian suggests testing it with F3 on Linux or macOS, or H2testw on Windows. These tools fill and read back the card, so back up anything on it first.
Flash Armbian to the microSD card
- Prepare the computer and card. You need a computer, a microSD card, and an SD-card writer. Use a USB card reader only if your computer lacks a suitable built-in writer. Confirm that the card contains no data you need to keep.
- Open Armbian Imager. Select your exact board and an offered image, or choose a local/custom image you have already checked. Armbian Imager can download official images and flash local
.img,.img.xz, or custom images. Its official writing guidance recommends it because it verifies writes and helps protect system disks from accidental overwrite: Armbian writing and verification guide. - Select the target card carefully. Check the selected device’s name and capacity so you do not overwrite another drive. Start the flash and wait for verification to complete; do not remove the card while writing or verifying.
- Eject the card safely and boot. Insert it into the board’s microSD slot, connect the appropriate power supply, and turn on the board. Follow the board manual for its slot and power details; boot time and behavior depend on the exact board and image.
If the board does not boot
- Recheck the image match. Confirm the image is for the exact model and revision, not merely an H618 board.
- Check the write and card. Ensure Armbian Imager completed verification. Try a known-good card or reader if the write failed or the card behaves inconsistently.
- Check power and connections. Use a supply meeting the board maker’s requirements and reseat the card.
- Consult board-specific troubleshooting. Boot procedures and diagnostics differ by board. A serial console may help, but only use the connector, voltage, and pinout specified for your exact board. The Orange Pi Zero 3 manual is relevant only if that is your board: Orange Pi Zero 3 manual.
Move to internal storage only if you want to
Booting from the microSD card does not automatically install Armbian to eMMC, NAND, SPI, or another internal or attached drive. After first boot, Armbian’s armbian-install utility offers storage and bootloader layouts such as booting from SD with the system on SATA or USB, booting from eMMC or NAND, and booting from SPI with the system on SATA, USB, or NVMe. Which choices appear depends on the board. Use only the options the utility presents for your hardware; see the Armbian installation guide.
