Serendipity (also called s9y) is an open-source, self-hosted PHP weblog engine for publishing and maintaining a blog. The project’s download page lists version 2.6.1, released July 22, 2026, as its latest stable release and recommends it while version 2.7 is in development.
What Serendipity is
The Serendipity project README describes it as “a PHP-powered weblog engine that gives the user an easy way to maintain a blog.” It is software you install on a web server you control, rather than a hosted blog service. The repository identifies its license as BSD 3-Clause.
That self-hosted approach gives the site owner control over the server environment, but also means arranging compatible hosting, installing the software, and managing updates and server permissions.
Current release
The official download page lists Serendipity 2.6.1, dated July 22, 2026, as the latest stable release and explicitly recommends using it. Version 2.7 is under development; it is not identified there as the stable release.

The project’s 2.6.0 announcement (April 11, 2026) describes PHP 8.4 compatibility, a better-performing integrated cache, webmention reception, restored Gravatar plugin mode, email-code two-factor authentication, backend timeout improvements, theme and thumbnail work, and security fixes for two reported issues. These are details from the 2.6.0 announcement, not a complete feature list for 2.6.1.

- Writing and editing blog entries
- Trackbacks and pingbacks
- A media library for images, videos, and other files
- Anti-spam measures
- Selectable themes and plugin management
- Categories, users, and groups
Plugins extend the system. The project gives static pages, tags, additional anti-spam options, and Markdown or Textile markup as examples of plugin functionality; do not assume these are enabled in the default package. Plugins can be added through the backend interface. The documentation also describes Spartacus as an online repository for plugins and themes.
What a custom installation requires
The current project README calls for PHP 8.0 or later, Apache, and one supported database: MySQL/MariaDB, PostgreSQL, or SQLite. It describes ImageMagick as useful. The installation guide says Serendipity is tailored for Apache, though it has also been run on IIS and Lighttpd, and documents PHP and database extensions and permissions.

During setup, the web server must be able to write the generated archives, compiled Smarty templates, uploads, and configuration files. Plugin and template directories also need write access if you use Spartacus to fetch extensions. Required access depends on your server setup; the guide’s example permission modes are not universal security settings.
For image processing, the guide names GDLib or ImageMagick. PHP file uploads must be enabled for media uploads. The documented installation process is to upload the complete release archive and visit the installer.

What to check before choosing or upgrading
Serendipity is a fit to consider if you want a self-hosted blog and are comfortable with the server requirements and ongoing administration. Before installing, verify that your hosting environment meets the current release’s requirements. Before upgrading, review the release-specific notes and confirm that the plugins and themes you rely on are compatible: older minimum requirements and plugin caveats may no longer apply to current releases. The project’s release history provides version-specific compatibility and upgrade information.
