In general computer terminology, the “main system chip” is the central processing unit (CPU), also called the processor. It executes program instructions and processes data. The phrase is general, though: it does not identify the exact chip inside a particular device.
What does the main system chip do?
The CPU carries out instructions that make programs run. It also performs calculations and processes data. Intel describes the processor, or CPU, as “the brain of your computer” in its processor explainer.
A simplified view of the CPU’s work is the instruction cycle:
- Fetch: retrieve an instruction from memory.
- Decode: interpret what the instruction asks the processor to do.
- Execute: carry out the instruction.
Intel explains this sequence in its microprocessor learning material. In practice, processors handle many instructions and tasks as software runs.

Is the CPU the same as a GPU or NPU?
No. CPU, GPU, and NPU name different types of processors with different roles. A computer may contain more than one type; “main” describes the CPU’s general-purpose central role, not a claim that it is the only processor. Intel’s CPU, GPU, and NPU explainer distinguishes their functions and workloads without making them interchangeable.
Does every device have one main system chip?
Not necessarily. “Chip” is a broad everyday term, and the architecture varies by device. In a phone or another compact system, the principal component may be described as a system-on-chip (SoC), which brings system functions together. A general definition cannot establish the exact chip or layout in a particular phone, game console, or embedded product.

How can you identify the chip in a specific device?
Start with the device’s exact make and model, then check its official specifications or documentation. Look for the processor, CPU, or SoC entry. The phrase “main system chip” alone is not enough to determine a model number; if the documentation does not use that wording, match the device’s listed component to its specifications rather than guessing.
