Apple’s current high-end desktop is Mac Studio, offered with M5 Max or M5 Ultra. It is the closest successor in Apple’s desktop lineup, but it is not a one-for-one replacement for buyers who need expansion cards installed inside a tower.
Did Apple discontinue the Mac Pro?
Yes. 9to5Mac reported on March 26, 2026, that Apple confirmed the Mac Pro was discontinued and that it had no plans for future Mac Pro hardware. Apple’s cited Newsroom releases do not announce the retirement themselves, so the discontinuation and future-plans statement should be understood as 9to5Mac’s account of Apple’s confirmation.
What replaces the Mac Pro?
Apple’s current pro desktop is Mac Studio. Apple announced M5 Max and M5 Ultra configurations on August 25, 2026, and said they became available September 22, 2026. The new Mac Studio combines high-end Apple silicon and pro connectivity in a compact enclosure rather than the Mac Pro’s tower design.
Mac Studio M5 Max and M5 Ultra at a glance
| Configuration | CPU | Maximum GPU | Maximum unified memory | U.S. starting price announced by Apple |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| M5 Max | 18-core | Up to 40-core | Up to 128GB | $2,499; $2,299 education price |
| M5 Ultra | 36-core | Up to 80-core | Up to 512GB | $5,499; $5,099 education price |
These are Apple-published configuration specifications and U.S. announcement prices, not independent measurements or a guarantee of current transaction pricing. Apple said the 512GB unified-memory configuration was expected in late October 2026. Its September 22 availability announcement said Mac Studio was available from that date. - 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What Apple claims about performance
Apple advertises the M5 models as up to 4.3x faster for AI performance, up to 2x faster for storage, up to 1.8x faster for graphics, and up to 1.3x faster for CPU speed. These are Apple’s comparisons using its stated baselines and footnotes; they are not independent head-to-head tests against the discontinued Mac Pro. The cited materials do not establish how the two machines compare on a particular professional workload.
Is Mac Studio a replacement for Mac Pro?
It is the successor in Apple’s desktop lineup, but whether it replaces a particular Mac Pro depends on how that machine is used. Mac Studio offers substantial unified-memory configurations and Thunderbolt 5 connectivity. Apple says Thunderbolt 5 can connect high-speed external storage, PCIe expansion chassis, and hubs, and can link multiple Mac Studio systems for distributed AI inference.

That external expansion route is not the same as fitting PCIe cards inside a tower. Apple’s 2023 Mac Pro announcement described that model as pairing M2 Ultra with PCIe expansion. That is historical context, not a statement of current Mac Pro availability. For users whose setup depends on internal cards, the change is consequential: a Thunderbolt chassis may be an option, but compatibility must be checked for the specific card, enclosure, software, and Mac configuration. Apple’s announcement alone does not establish that every internal-card workflow will work externally.
How to decide whether Mac Studio fits your workflow
- Match the chip to the work. Identify the applications and tasks that drive your CPU, GPU, and memory needs. The published maximums do not mean every configuration is necessary; the cited sources provide no independent workload comparison between Mac Studio and Mac Pro.
- Check memory requirements. Compare your actual project and application memory needs with the chosen Mac Studio configuration’s unified-memory limit. A higher ceiling is available on M5 Ultra, but it also has a substantially higher announced U.S. starting price.
- Inventory expansion cards. If you rely on PCIe cards, verify each card’s compatibility with a specific Thunderbolt 5 chassis, macOS, and your software before changing systems. Do not assume external expansion is equivalent to a Mac Pro tower.
- Check ports and peripherals. Apple lists Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thunderbolt 5 on the new Mac Studio. Confirm that your storage, displays, hubs, and other devices fit the available connections and your desk setup.
- Compare the full configuration cost. The listed prices are starting prices. Compare the configuration you need—including memory and any external expansion hardware—with your existing or planned system rather than treating the Ultra model as the automatic Mac Pro successor.
What changed from the Mac Pro era?
Apple introduced Mac Studio and Mac Pro together in 2023, presenting the tower as the option with PCIe expansion and Mac Studio as a compact high-performance desktop. The 2026 Mac Studio announcement continues the compact approach, while adding M5 Max and M5 Ultra configurations and Thunderbolt 5. Apple’s chief hardware officer Johny Srouji described it as “the ultimate desktop for on-device AI and the world’s most demanding pro workflows” in the August 25 announcement; that is Apple’s promotional characterization, not an independent assessment.
