Storytelling may help artificial intelligence systems learn human values by giving them examples of behavior and social norms—but it is a research idea, not a proven recipe for making AI ethical. One proposal uses stories alongside explicit scripts of everyday events, so an artificial learner has more context for interpreting what people do and why.
Why stories could help an AI learn social values
People often learn social expectations through examples: how someone treats a guest, responds to a mistake, or behaves in a shared setting. Stories can capture those examples and convey tacit knowledge—the assumptions and unwritten norms people use without spelling them out.
That makes narrative an appealing possible teaching tool for artificial agents. Rather than relying only on abstract rules, a system might encounter situations and actions through stories. The proposal is that such examples could help communicate values. It does not establish that an AI can reliably infer the right lesson, or behave ethically in situations it has not encountered.
How Scheherazade adds context to stories
Secondary coverage describes Scheherazade, a system associated with Georgia Tech researchers, as assembling simple scripts for common events with help from contributors on Amazon Mechanical Turk. An ordinary sequence might include ordering drinks before a meal. These scripts are intended to make routine context more explicit for an artificial learner.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The distinction is between a narrative and the scaffolding around it: the story supplies an example, while an event script can lay out expected steps that a human reader might take for granted. The aim is to help an agent interpret what happens without assuming it can fill every gap in a story on its own.
Why a story can be difficult for a machine to interpret
Stories are generally written for people, who use shared knowledge to understand what has been left unsaid. A narrative may skip routine actions, assume a social convention, or shift backward and forward in time. A human reader can often make sense of those choices; an artificial learner may not know which missing details matter.

Adding event scripts is one way the described approach attempts to address that problem. It makes some of the background sequence more explicit, but the available account does not provide enough primary-source detail to explain the system’s full algorithm or how well it performed.

The work is best understood as an exploration of storytelling as a possible way to represent values and social expectations for agents. A separate discussion connects the topic to the paper Beyond Adversarial: The Case for Game AI as Storytelling, which likewise treats storytelling as a possible direction rather than a settled solution.

The available accounts do not establish that stories make AI ethical, resolve conflicts between values, or replace evaluation, governance, and safety work. They also do not provide a measured effectiveness result or a comparison showing that this approach outperforms other ways of teaching or constraining AI behavior. Claims that storytelling is “the secret” should therefore be read as a provocative framing, not a demonstrated conclusion.

What to take away
- Stories could provide examples of behavior and tacit social norms that are hard to capture in abstract rules alone.
- Event scripts can supply context for ordinary actions that a human story may leave unstated.
- Neither narrative examples nor added context guarantee ethical behavior; the proposal remains a research direction, not a validated recipe.
