It covers the workflow from drawing a circuit through laying out a board, checking design rules, and preparing manufacturing files. You need an account, and projects are managed through Altium 365 Personal Space. Altium describes the tool as suitable for makers, hobbyists, and academia, but warns that large boards can become impractical to edit.
What is CircuitMaker?
CircuitMaker is Altium’s desktop software for creating electronic schematics and printed circuit board layouts. Altium describes it as built on Altium Designer technology and calls it a “free design solution” (Altium CircuitMaker).
“Free” describes the design application; it does not mean anonymous or fully offline use. Altium requires an account, and projects are managed in Altium 365 Personal Space. The product page also presents online collaboration as part of CircuitMaker.
What can you design with it?
Altium’s documented workflow runs from project setup to schematic capture, PCB layout, design checks, and manufacturing-output preparation. Its listed features include:

These are vendor-described capabilities, not independent test results. For manufacturing handoff, Altium’s guides cover formats including Gerber, NC Drill, and ODB++ (CircuitMaker documentation and workflow guides). The software prepares design data; physical board fabrication is a separate step.
How do you get CircuitMaker?
Altium’s download page asks you to submit a form to receive activation details for a free copy. Registration is required before using the software. Follow the current instructions on Altium’s CircuitMaker download page and confirm the installer’s requirements there before installing.

The published FAQ baseline lists 64-bit Windows 10 or Windows 11 and an internet connection, alongside recommended hardware. That requirements list was last updated April 21, 2022, so it should not be treated as a verified support matrix for every current installer (Altium’s CircuitMaker FAQ).
How projects, privacy, and collaboration work
CircuitMaker projects are stored in Altium 365 Personal Space. Altium documents two relevant access modes:

- Private sandbox projects: visible to the owner and users specifically given access.
- Public community projects: viewable by others. The owner controls when a project is published; editing access is shared separately.
The product page says CircuitMaker 2.0 allows up to five private projects. Because quotas and cloud features can change, check Altium’s current CircuitMaker product page for the applicable limit. Project storage is version-controlled and supports web viewing, according to Altium’s project documentation (CircuitMaker projects in Altium 365).
Projects are cached locally for much of the design work, according to Altium’s FAQ, but you cannot create or save projects to Personal Space while offline. In practice, an internet connection and Altium account are part of project management even if some work can continue on a local cache.

What are CircuitMaker’s practical limits?
Altium says CircuitMaker has no hard component or net limits, but its FAQ warns that large designs may become impractical. Its published guidance says editing performance begins to degrade around 5,000 pads and the PCB editor becomes virtually unusable at 50,000 pads. These are Altium’s stated thresholds, not independent benchmark results; actual performance can depend on the design and computer.
The headline count of components or nets therefore is not a reliable way to judge whether a project will be comfortable to edit. Board pad count is a more useful caution from Altium’s own guidance, particularly for designs approaching thousands of pads.

Will existing design files work?
CircuitMaker uses its own PCB document format, *.CMPcbDoc. Altium’s FAQ says Altium schematic documents can be added to a CircuitMaker project, but PCB documents from other Altium products cannot simply be added and opened. Altium Designer provides an export-to-CircuitMaker command. Release notes also describe importing third-party design projects and documents, including KiCad and P-CAD (CircuitMaker release notes).
Import support does not guarantee that every file, setting, or feature will convert unchanged. Before moving important work, test the relevant pathway with a copy of the project and check Altium’s current format support documentation.
Which version is documented?
Altium’s release history identifies CircuitMaker 2.3.0 (build 3), released July 1, 2024. Those notes record a change in the component search engine from the Octopart API to the Nexar API. The release-notes page shows an update date of February 2, 2026; that page date is not proof that no later software release exists. Check Altium’s download page for the version currently offered.
Who is CircuitMaker a good fit for?
CircuitMaker is worth considering if you want a no-cost schematic-and-PCB workflow on Windows, are comfortable with account-based project storage, and expect board complexity to remain within Altium’s practical performance guidance. Its documented tools cover ordinary design stages through manufacturing-file preparation, and Altium provides quick-start guides for those stages.

The published FAQ’s requirements and performance guidance are older than the latest dated release-note update, so confirm current compatibility and test important projects before committing to a workflow.
