Run sudo systemctl daemon-reload after changing or installing a systemd unit file or drop-in so systemd rereads its configuration. It does not restart a service or reload that service’s own application configuration; choose those actions separately.
What systemctl daemon-reload does
The command tells the systemd manager to reload its configuration and unit files, rerun generators, and recreate the dependency tree. In the systemd project’s systemctl manual, the operation is described as reloading manager configuration, all unit files, and the dependency tree. The systemd.generator manual also notes that it may be run after installing generators or updating their configuration.
For a system-level unit, the usual command is:
sudo systemctl daemon-reload
Run it after saving a unit file or drop-in in a systemd unit search path. The manager then uses the updated definition for subsequent operations. If the service is already running, decide separately whether it needs a restart to pick up changed unit settings.
Which command should you use?
| Command | What it targets | Typical reason | Does it restart or reload a service? |
|---|---|---|---|
systemctl daemon-reload |
The systemd manager and its unit configuration | A unit file, drop-in, or generator configuration changed | No. Take any needed service action separately. |
systemctl reload NAME |
The named service | The service’s application configuration changed and it supports reloading | It asks the running service to reload its own configuration; it does not reload the systemd unit file. |
systemctl daemon-reexec |
The systemd manager process | A manager reexecution is specifically needed, such as in circumstances associated with debugging or package upgrades | It reexecutes the manager, not a service restart command. |
The distinctions above follow the systemd project’s systemctl manual. It gives reloading Apache’s httpd.conf as an example of a service reload, distinct from reloading the systemd unit definition.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
When to reload the manager, the service, or both
You changed a unit file or drop-in
Run systemctl daemon-reload so the manager reads the updated unit configuration. If the changed settings need to affect a process that is already running, determine whether that service must be restarted; the manager reload alone does not restart it.
You changed the application’s configuration
Use systemctl reload NAME only if the service supports an application-level reload. This sends the service its supported reload request; it does not make systemd reread the unit file. If the service has no suitable reload operation, a restart may be needed instead.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
You changed both
First run systemctl daemon-reload to refresh systemd’s view of the unit definition. Then use the service’s supported reload or restart operation as appropriate for the application configuration and changed unit settings.
You are considering a manager reexecution
systemctl daemon-reexec serializes manager state, reexecutes the manager process, and deserializes the saved state. The systemctl manual characterizes it as a heavier-weight operation, mostly useful for debugging and package upgrades; it is not the routine command for applying an edited unit file.

What daemon-reload does not do
- It does not start, stop, or restart a service by itself.
- It does not apply a service’s application-level configuration, such as a web server’s own configuration file.
- It does not reexecute the systemd manager process. That is the separate
systemctl daemon-reexecoperation.
The systemd manual also documents SIGHUP as a way to reload the daemon’s complete configuration, mostly equivalently to systemctl daemon-reload. For ordinary administration, use the explicit systemctl command so the intended manager operation is clear.
Practical sequence after editing a unit
- Save the unit file or drop-in in the appropriate systemd unit search path.
- Run
sudo systemctl daemon-reloadto make the manager reread unit configuration and rebuild its dependency tree. - Decide whether the running service must restart for changed unit settings to take effect. Restart it separately if required.
- If you also changed application configuration, use
systemctl reload NAMEonly when that service supports it; otherwise determine whether a restart is appropriate.
Version and distribution note
The cited manuals are from the upstream systemd project’s current source-tree documentation, accessed October 4, 2026. Wording and behavior details can differ among systemd versions and distribution packages, so check the manuals and unit layout for the system you administer.
