A serious cyberattack is possible, but the nationwide catastrophe in Netflix’s Zero Day is not considered likely by the cybersecurity expert quoted by Netflix. Real incidents have targeted critical infrastructure and could disrupt local services. That is different from proving an attacker could coordinate a countrywide collapse or alter election results. The evidence cited here supports real risks and narrower disruptions—not the full chain of events shown in the series.
What happens in Zero Day?
Netflix’s fictional limited series follows former U.S. President George Mullen as he investigates a catastrophic cyberattack that kills thousands and throws the country into chaos. The story also explores disinformation, political power, and uncertainty over what is true. The deaths and nationwide devastation belong to the show’s fictional premise; they are not reported real-world outcomes.
Netflix describes the attack as involving a “zero day”: in its explanation of the series, software is exploited while it is vulnerable and before a protective patch is available. That describes the show’s usage, not a formal technical definition established by the sources discussed here. In any case, finding or exploiting a vulnerability does not by itself establish what systems an attacker can reach or what damage would follow.
How likely is a catastrophe on the show’s scale?
Clint Watts, a cybersecurity expert and former FBI special agent, told Netflix that a major cyberattack is possible but that a scenario like the series is “not likely,” in part because it would require substantial human coordination. He put the everyday risk more plainly: “So, I don’t think people should stay up at night worried that their internet’s going to go out.” These are Watts’s assessments, not a quantified probability or a guarantee that serious cyber incidents will not occur.

Eric Schultz, a political consultant and former principal deputy White House press secretary, told Netflix, “The threat is real, and it’s dangerous, and it’s acute.” He was discussing cyber risk broadly; that statement does not mean the series’ particular chain of events is imminent. Schultz also said it was “completely within reason” for the government to establish a commission like the one in the series. That is a comment about the plausibility of a policy response, not evidence that the fictional attack has occurred.
What would have to happen for the plot to become real?
A dramatic cyber incident involves several distinct steps. Evidence for one step does not establish the next, and the sources cited here do not show the complete chain occurring at the scale portrayed in Zero Day.

- A vulnerability exists. A flaw or exposed system may create an opportunity, but it does not prove an attacker has found or used it.
- An attacker gains access. Exploiting a vulnerability, compromising an account, or reaching an exposed device establishes access to something—not control over every system connected to it.
- The access reaches systems with operational consequences. An intrusion into operational technology or another critical system can pose a real risk, but its effect depends on what the system controls and how it is protected.
- The disruption spreads or is coordinated across regions and services. A local or sector-specific incident is not the same as synchronized nationwide failure. The official examples below describe narrower activity and possible disruption, not a countrywide collapse.
- The event changes public understanding or political outcomes. False claims about an incident can undermine trust. That information effect is distinct from evidence that votes were changed or ballots compromised.
What real incidents and official assessments show
| Source and date | What it reported | What that does—and does not—establish |
|---|---|---|
| FBI and CISA, August 15, 2024 | Ransomware on state or local government networks could cause localized delays during voting periods. Officials use technological, physical, and procedural controls, including backups, to maintain voting and counting operations. | Some local disruption is possible; the statement does not describe nationwide failure or show that a delay changes votes. |
| FBI and CISA, September 12, 2024 | The agencies said they had no information indicating that a cyberattack on U.S. election infrastructure had prevented an election, changed voter-registration information, compromised ballots, or disrupted timely counting or transmission of unofficial results. | This describes agency knowledge as of that publication. It is not a guarantee about future attacks. |
| DOJ and DHS, December 18, 2023, reporting on the 2022 federal elections | The agencies detected some foreign-affiliated and criminal cyber activity targeting election infrastructure, but found no evidence it prevented voting, changed votes, or disrupted timely tallying or transmission of results. | The assessment concerns infrastructure effects in the 2022 federal elections. It explicitly did not assess efforts to sway voters or influence public opinion. |
| NSA, December 9, 2025 | NSA said agencies observed pro-Russia hacktivist groups using inadequately secured VNC connections to access operational technology devices in critical-infrastructure systems. It characterized the activity as opportunistic and warned of possible harm, including unintended effects. | This is evidence of targeting and access to infrastructure devices, not evidence of a coordinated attack causing the series’ nationwide devastation. |
Taken together, these findings show why “cyberattack” is not a single outcome. Ransomware can create local delays; attackers can target infrastructure; and agencies can report no evidence of changed votes in a defined election cycle. Those statements address different systems, effects, and time periods, so none should be stretched into a claim that future attacks are impossible—or that a nationwide catastrophe has happened.
Could an attack disrupt an election?
It is important to distinguish a disruption to government or election-related services from interference with the casting or counting of ballots. FBI and CISA warned in August 2024 that ransomware affecting state or local networks could cause localized delays, while noting that election officials use backups and other controls to continue operations. A delay is a serious operational problem, but it is not, by itself, evidence that votes were manipulated.

The agencies’ September 2024 statement concerned what they knew about U.S. election infrastructure at that time. DOJ and DHS’s assessment, published in December 2023, covered cyber activity around the 2022 federal elections. Neither finding should be generalized beyond its stated scope or treated as a forecast for later elections.
How can disinformation make an incident more damaging?
The information surrounding a cyber incident can become a separate source of harm. In September 2024, FBI and CISA warned that possession of voter-registration data alone does not show that a database was compromised: such data can be publicly or legitimately available. They also cautioned that false claims of hacked voter information may be intended to sow distrust.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
That distinction matters even when there is no evidence of altered votes. A false or exaggerated story about an attack can weaken confidence in election administration without changing a ballot or interrupting the count. The DOJ and DHS assessment of the 2022 elections expressly did not evaluate efforts to sway voters or influence opinion, so its findings about infrastructure effects cannot settle that separate question.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What is a useful way to judge the show’s realism?
- Ask what was accessed. A vulnerability, compromised account, or exposed operational technology device is an entry point, not proof that an attacker controls an entire service or sector.
- Look for the size and duration of the effect. Localized delays and opportunistic targeting are not equivalent to simultaneous nationwide failure.
- Separate technical damage from political consequences. Disruption, changed votes, and public distrust are different claims and require different evidence.
- Check the date and scope of official findings. Statements about a particular election cycle report what agencies knew about that period; they do not guarantee future security.
Netflix also reports that director Lesli Linka Glatter read Kim Zetter’s Countdown to Zero Day: Stuxnet and the Launch of the World’s First Digital Weapon for inspiration. It offers a route into the history of real cyber operations, but the connection does not make the series’ catastrophic scenario likely.
