The available evidence does not confirm which session “Perf at Collaboration Summit 2015” refers to. A Linux-focused page links a Linux Foundation slide deck titled “BPF-in-kernel virtual machine,” attributed to Alexei Starovoitov and associated with the summit, but the deck itself could not be verified. Separately, a 2015 blog post demonstrates Linux perf on ARM systems; it does not connect that example to the summit presentation.
Is “Perf at Collaboration Summit 2015” a confirmed talk?
Not on the evidence currently available. The Linux-focused page links a Linux Foundation presentation called “BPF-in-kernel virtual machine,” credits Alexei Starovoitov, and associates it with the 2015 Linux Collaboration Summit. Because the linked slides were not available for verification and no reliable official event listing for the exact title was found, this connection is a lead rather than confirmation that this was a talk titled “Perf at Collaboration Summit 2015.” Source
That distinction matters: the available record does not establish the session’s exact title or content, so measurements, conclusions, or recommendations should not be attributed to Starovoitov or the summit.
What Linux perf measures
Linux perf, also referred to in this context as perf_events, collects performance data, including hardware-counter events. Depending on the event and hardware, counters can track things such as instructions executed or cache misses. These measurements describe particular events rather than performance in the abstract; their usefulness depends on which event is counted and the system being measured. 2015 ARM perf example

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Why compare counters instead of CPU time alone?
A 2015 blog post uses perf to compare two ARM systems with different clock speeds and cache configurations. In that case, CPU time alone may not explain why one system behaves differently. Instruction counts or cache misses can provide additional evidence about the work performed and how memory hierarchy affects it. The post is an example of measurement practice, not evidence about the summit session. Read the ARM example
For a meaningful comparison, identify the event being measured and record the hardware and system context. A counter result from one processor configuration should not automatically be treated as directly comparable to a result from another.

How eBPF relates to perf events
eBPF can support tracing and observability workflows. Technical documentation describes programs attached to event sources that include perf_events, linking the two technologies without making them interchangeable: perf is used to collect performance data, while eBPF programs can be attached to events as part of tracing workflows. eBPF technical reference
This relationship makes a BPF-focused presentation plausible background for a page connecting the summit and performance tooling, but it does not confirm the identity or subject of the session.
