A text storage site is an online service where you submit text and get a link others can open to read it. The common name for this kind of service is a pastebin. It is useful for sharing a code snippet, log, configuration example, or short note without putting the whole block in a chat or email.
How a text storage site works
You paste or upload text to the service, which hosts it and creates a URL for viewing it. Depending on the service, the page may also offer a raw-text view, syntax formatting, an expiry setting, or access controls. The essential feature is hosted text shared through a link—not simply saving a file on your own device.
For example, if a support colleague needs to inspect a long diagnostic log, you can share its link instead of sending the entire log in a message. Anyone who can access the page can read the submitted text, subject to the service’s settings.
What people use pastebins for
- Code snippets: Share a small example or a piece of code that is difficult to read in a chat window.
- Logs and diagnostic output: Send text that may help someone troubleshoot an issue.
- Structured data and configuration: Share JSON, configuration examples, or similar text.
- Temporary notes: Make a short block of text available through a link for a limited period, if the service supports expiry.
What a text storage site is not
A pastebin is a convenient sharing mechanism, not a substitute for every kind of storage. It is not the same as a local disk, a password manager, or a durable documentation system. For lasting team knowledge, use documentation kept in an appropriate, version-controlled system. For credentials and other secrets, use a dedicated secret-management product; Pastebin.com’s terms advise against using pastebins for that purpose: Pastebin.com Terms of Service.

Unlisted, password-protected, and encrypted are different
Visibility and security labels can sound similar, but they address different risks. An unlisted paste generally does not appear in public listings, yet its URL can still be shared. pastebin.ca’s Help documentation puts it plainly: “Unlisted URLs are bearer links — treat them like secrets.” Anyone who obtains the complete link may be able to open the text, so an unlisted setting is not encryption: pastebin.ca Help.
Password protection adds a check before a paste can be viewed, while encryption concerns whether the provider can read the stored content. These are separate controls. For example, Pastebin.ai documents that its normal and password-protected text is server-readable, while its encrypted mode stores ciphertext. When evaluating a service for sensitive material, check where encryption happens and whether the provider can access readable text. A label such as “private” or “password-protected” alone does not answer those questions.
Expiration and deletion do not recall copies
An expiry setting or deletion control can make text unavailable from the original service, but it cannot retrieve copies already saved by recipients, captured in screenshots, downloaded, or reproduced elsewhere. Before posting, assume that anything a recipient can read may be copied. If you need lasting access management, revocation, or an audit trail, check whether the provider actually offers those controls rather than relying on a paste’s expiry date.

Compare services on separate features rather than treating “private” as a complete security description. Official documentation shows that available controls vary: pastebin.ca describes public, unlisted, encrypted, and read-limited modes, while Pastebin.com documents API fields for format, expiry, and visibility.
