You can run Windows on a Mac, but the right method depends first on the Mac’s processor. On eligible Intel Macs, Apple’s Boot Camp installs Windows on a separate partition and you restart to switch between operating systems. On Apple silicon Macs, Windows 11 Arm can run in a virtual machine such as Parallels Desktop, or you can access a cloud-hosted Windows 365 PC. Each route differs in compatibility, licensing, and whether Windows runs locally.
Which method fits your Mac?
Check whether your Mac has an Intel processor or Apple silicon before choosing a setup. Apple’s Boot Camp instructions are for Intel-based Macs; Microsoft’s cited options cover M1, M2, and M3 Macs for virtualization and Windows 365.

These options are not interchangeable. Boot Camp installs Windows locally but requires a restart to switch systems; a virtual machine runs Windows alongside macOS; Windows 365 streams a remote desktop. Choose based on your Mac’s processor, whether Windows must run locally, the apps and devices you need, and any employer or school IT rules.
How Boot Camp works on an Intel Mac
Apple says Boot Camp installs Windows on an Intel-based Mac by preparing a Windows partition and installing support software for the Mac hardware. At startup, you choose whether to enter Windows or macOS; Boot Camp does not run both operating systems at once. Apple’s overview of Boot Camp

Check storage and model requirements
- Apple’s installation article calls for at least 64 GB of free storage and recommends 128 GB or more for a better experience and space for automatic updates.
- Some older Mac models require a USB flash drive of at least 16 GB for installation media; specified newer models do not. Confirm the requirement for your exact model in Apple’s instructions.
- Choose the Windows partition size carefully. Apple says it cannot be resized later through the Boot Camp setup.
Apple’s cited installation instructions address Windows 10; they do not establish that every Intel Mac supports every current Windows release. Before installing, verify the exact model against Apple’s current guidance and check Windows requirements and support status.
How Windows 11 works on Apple silicon
Apple silicon Macs use Windows 11 Arm rather than the Intel version of Windows. Microsoft identifies Parallels Desktop versions 18, 19, and 20 as authorized solutions for running Windows 11 Pro or Enterprise Arm in a virtual environment on M1, M2, and M3 Macs. Check Microsoft’s current authorization information and Parallels’ current version details before installing, since supported versions can change.

Understand Windows Arm compatibility
Some apps run natively on Arm; others may run through x86 or x64 emulation. That does not guarantee every application, peripheral, or feature will work. Microsoft notes that hardware drivers must be designed for Windows Arm, and some games may fail if they depend on anti-cheat drivers that are not available for Arm. Its Parallels guidance also identifies limitations involving DirectX 12-dependent software, 32-bit Arm apps from the Store on M1, M2, and M3 Macs, and nested virtualization features such as Windows Subsystem for Linux and Windows Sandbox.
- Ask the software publisher whether the specific app supports Windows 11 Arm or emulation.
- Check that essential printers, scanners, security devices, and other peripherals have Windows Arm drivers.
- For games or specialist software, confirm requirements for graphics APIs, anti-cheat, and virtualization with the vendor or IT administrator.

Check the Windows license
Microsoft says that if you do not already have a Windows 11 Pro license, you need to purchase one; each Windows instance requires its own unique license. Confirm which Windows edition and license terms apply to your use before setting up a virtual machine.
