Yes, but selectively. Biofuels—especially biogas and biomass fuels used for stationary heat and power—can spur changes in distributed-generation systems where fuel preparation, prime-mover compatibility, controls, heat recovery, and emissions monitoring must fit local conditions. The evidence points to a range of possible equipment and integration improvements, not a single winning machine or a guaranteed industry-wide transformation.
What biofuels can change in a distributed-generation system
Combined heat and power (CHP) is a useful way to understand the opportunity. A CHP installation brings together a prime mover, an electricity generator, heat-recovery equipment, and an electrical interconnection. The prime mover may be a reciprocating engine, combustion turbine or microturbine, or fuel cell. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says CHP systems can use renewable fuels in the form of biomass and biogas, though some fuels need processing or refining before use. EPA’s CHP technology overview describes the equipment and integration considerations.
That means innovation need not be limited to the generator itself. It may involve fuel cleanup or preparation, controls that accommodate fuel characteristics, heat-recovery configuration, or the way equipment is connected and operated at a particular site. These are plausible routes created by system requirements; the available evidence does not establish a measured wave of product launches or quantify how much innovation each route has produced.
Here, “biofuels” refers primarily to biogas and biomass used for stationary heat and power. Liquid biofuels commonly discussed in transport are outside the scope of the European Commission Joint Research Centre’s bioenergy status report cited below, so its figures should not be read as evidence about transport fuels or distributed-generation equipment sales.

Which equipment could be involved?
There is no single biofuel generator architecture. The site’s fuel and energy needs help determine which prime mover is suitable; a fuel label alone does not. EPA advises end users to consider facility electric and thermal loads, local fuel availability, and other site conditions. EPA’s overview discusses the CHP technology categories, while FuelCell Energy’s 2024 annual report identifies reciprocating gas engines, turbines, and microturbines among technologies competing in distributed generation. That company filing is useful for identifying market categories, not for an independent comparison of their performance.
| Equipment family | Potential role in a bioenergy system | What the available evidence establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Reciprocating engines | Can be configured as CHP prime movers using biogas where fuel quality, processing, and facility loads are suitable. | EPA documents a biogas-fired facility example; the cited sources do not establish a universal cost, efficiency, emissions, or service-life advantage. |
| Combustion turbines and microturbines | Alternative CHP prime-mover categories to evaluate against site needs and available fuel. | They are identified as relevant distributed-generation technologies, but the cited sources do not provide a like-for-like biofuel comparison with engines or fuel cells. |
| Fuel cells | A further possible CHP architecture. FuelCell Energy says its stationary carbonate fuel cells can run on biogas. | The fuel compatibility statement and development plans are company-reported, not independent comparative evidence. See FuelCell Energy’s 2024 annual report. |
The table identifies options, not a ranking. A current, independent, like-for-like dataset comparing installed cost, electrical efficiency, lifecycle emissions, or service life across these technologies by fuel and location is not established in the cited sources.

Why fuel handling and methane control matter
Fuel preparation is part of the equipment problem
Biomass and biogas are not automatically ready to feed into a prime mover. EPA notes that some renewable fuels need processing or refining. The equipment design therefore has to account for fuel composition and consistency as well as the generator: preparation requirements affect the complete system, including operation and integration. EPA’s biomass CHP catalog can help explain basic preparation and conversion components, but it was developed in 2007 and some information is outdated; it should not be used as a current cost or market guide.
Monitoring methane is part of credible climate accounting
Using biogas does not by itself establish a project’s climate benefit. A European Commission report on EU biogas and biomethane supply chains addresses methane-emission detection, quantification, and mitigation, connecting those practices with greenhouse-gas accounting under the EU Renewable Energy Directive methodology. Those monitoring practices are distinct from generator performance: a system’s efficiency does not substitute for measuring and managing methane emissions. See the Commission’s 2024 report on methane emissions in biogas and biomethane supply chains.

What a real biogas CHP installation shows—and what it does not
EPA’s example from the Durham Advanced Wastewater Treatment Facility in Oregon illustrates how local fuel supply can shape equipment choices. In a 2016 upgrade, the facility installed two 848 kW reciprocating engines, bringing CHP system capacity to 1.796 MW. The installation used biogas produced onsite, and EPA says the new engines enabled the facility to avoid flaring excess biogas. The project replaced an aging 500 kW system. These are details of one facility case study, not a performance guarantee or proof that engines are preferable at other sites. EPA’s CHP technology page provides the case description.
How to assess whether a site could benefit
For an operator considering a bioenergy CHP project, the practical question is whether the fuel, energy loads, and operating requirements fit together. Evaluate the whole system rather than choosing a prime mover on fuel compatibility alone:

What EU bioenergy growth says about the opportunity
The European Commission Joint Research Centre’s 2025 EU bioenergy status report, published February 6, 2026, gives context for the broader sector, not a forecast of distributed-generation equipment demand. It reports that EU bioenergy generated over €32 billion in turnover and supported 304,000 jobs; EU biomethane production increased tenfold since 2011; and in 2023 bioenergy supplied 75% of EU renewable heating and cooling and almost 20% of total EU heating and cooling consumption. The report also says the EU attracted 77% of global venture capital for high-value bioenergy inventions in 2024. That last figure concerns high-value bioenergy inventions, not distributed-generation equipment investment.
These figures indicate a substantial European bioenergy sector and activity across its value chains. They do not show how much of that activity went to CHP prime movers, establish a global market trend, or prove that biofuels caused specific equipment advances.

Will biofuels drive equipment innovation?
The evidence supports a qualified yes: local biogas and biomass resources create practical design demands around fuel preparation, prime-mover selection, system integration, and methane management. Those demands give developers reasons to adapt equipment and controls for particular applications. The opportunity is conditional on the site, fuel, useful heat demand, and regulatory context, and the sources do not establish a settled winner among engines, turbines, microturbines, and fuel cells. A stronger technology comparison would need consistent assumptions about feedstock, gas cleanup, plant scale, heat use, grid connection, and location.
