The Tuft & Needle Original Mattress II is a 12-inch all-foam mattress that the manufacturer labels firm and recommends for back and stomach sleepers. RTINGS’ September 2026 review describes its tested Queen as medium-firm and finds that comfort and support vary substantially by body weight and sleeping position. It may suit some lighter back or stomach sleepers, but its pressure relief and support are less convincing for several other sleeper profiles.
What is the Tuft & Needle Original Mattress II?
The Original Mattress II is Tuft & Needle’s current all-foam version of its Original mattress. It is distinct from both the older Tuft & Needle Original and the separately sold Original Hybrid II. The manufacturer describes the II as its firmest all-foam Original and gives it a 12-inch profile.
Its listed construction consists of a cooling cover over T&N Adaptive foam, support foam, and base foam. Tuft & Needle describes its Adaptive foam as responsive and breathable; those are the manufacturer’s material descriptions, not independent measurements of temperature regulation. There are two useful firmness reference points. Tuft & Needle calls the mattress “Firm” and says: “The Mattress II is a Firm feel for structured support best for back and stomach sleepers.” RTINGS, reviewing its tested unit, describes the feel as medium-firm. The terms are not directly interchangeable measurements: one is the manufacturer’s positioning, while the other is an independent reviewer’s assessment of a particular test mattress.

RTINGS’ model-specific review, published September 24, 2026 and modified September 25, 2026, finds that the surface feels responsive rather than deeply enveloping. Its fit assessment depends on both sleeper weight and position:
- Back and stomach sleepers: RTINGS finds stronger support for some lighter sleepers in these positions. It reports weaker support for many average-weight and heavier sleepers, so the brand’s broad recommendation should not be read as a guarantee of fit for every back or stomach sleeper.
- Side sleepers: RTINGS reports limited shoulder and arm pressure relief for lighter side sleepers. Heavier side sleepers sink farther into the mattress and may receive more cushioning, though that does not establish that it will suit every person.
These are review findings about the tested mattress, not medical advice or a prediction of every owner’s experience. RTINGS identifies responsiveness and edge support as strengths, but its findings on pressure relief and support make this a less versatile choice across different body types and sleeping positions. Its comparisons with the T&N Mint and other foam mattresses are reviewer judgments, not a universal ranking.

How is the Original II different from the older Original?
Tuft & Needle says the Original II is two inches taller than the former Original and was adjusted to feel slightly firmer in response to customer feedback. A review of the older Original therefore does not establish how the II feels or performs. Check that a review names “Original Mattress II” or “Original II,” rather than relying on a page that only says “Original.”

What are the price, trial, and warranty terms?
When Tuft & Needle’s product page was retrieved, it displayed a starting price of $399, with prices varying by size. Mattress prices and availability can change, so check the live page for the price of the size you want. The manufacturer advertises a 100-night sleep trial and a 10-year limited warranty covering manufacturing and workmanship defects for purchases covered by its direct-site terms. Do not assume those terms apply to a marketplace listing without checking that seller’s policy and the specific listing.

What foundation and accessories does it need?
Tuft & Needle says a box spring is not required, but the mattress needs a solid, supportive foundation. Its examples are a platform bed, slatted frame, or adjustable base. Confirm that a slatted frame provides suitable support for the mattress before setting it up.
The manufacturer also says the mattress is fiberglass-free and describes its sewn-in fire barrier as rayon fibers treated with ammonium phosphate. Those are Tuft & Needle’s materials claims. Its washable waterproof protector is listed for mattresses up to 14 inches deep; it is optional, and that fit statement does not establish compatibility for every third-party protector.
