Visual polish is not a matter of adding more decoration. It comes from making a game’s assets, layout, motion, and gameplay feel like parts of the same experience—and making the next action easy to understand. Kfir Adut’s account of two Godot projects shows why that means choosing a different visual identity for each game, while reusing a disciplined method of design and review.
Why the two games needed different visual identities
In his September 25, 2026 account, project builder Kfir Adut describes two Android games with different player needs. Read Adut’s account on DEV Community.
Glimmerbook Solitaire: make the interface feel like a storybook
Glimmerbook is a portrait solitaire game framed by a storybook world. Its rules worked and its Android build ran, but Adut felt the presentation looked cheap. The proposed visual language tied the interface to that setting: an illustrated bookshelf, woven burgundy card backs, parchment-like card faces with a gold frame and faint book mark, and a wolf-head control mark drawn from the game’s story vocabulary.
Ithaca Rising: make action and status readable
Ithaca Rising is an action and idle RPG based on Odysseus’s journey. Its hero could run and fight, but the interface felt like functional pieces competing for screen space. The team chose a bronze-and-navy pixel-art family for the HUD, controls, buttons, and Arsenal. After reviewing a live Android crop, they also adjusted the spacing of the title scroll—an example of checking the whole composition after choosing the assets.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The games did not need to look alike just because they shared an engine and team. What could carry from one project to the other was a process: select a visual language that suits the game, make the next action legible, and inspect the result in context.
What makes a game UI feel coherent?
Coherence is built through repeated choices, not a collection of individually attractive assets. A texture, font, sprite scale, or control color can work on its own and still clash with the rest of the screen. Adut notes that a licensed asset pack might solve one screen while making another feel as if it came from a different game. The team also excluded packs that did not meet its licensing rules, including attribution requirements.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
For Ithaca Rising, choosing a consistent asset family helped the interface feel more unified than giving each button a different ornament. That does not mean every screen must be identical. It means recurring elements should look related, and variations should serve a clear purpose.
Adut puts the lesson this way: “The strongest thing we have learned is modest: a game’s identity is made from repeated choices.”

How to make visual polish support play
Use motifs players can interpret
An icon does not explain itself just because it is distinctive. The wolf-head mark connects to Glimmerbook’s story vocabulary, but a player may still need context or a tooltip to understand what the control does. Pair thematic symbols with clear interaction cues, especially when the action is not obvious.
Make motion communicate state or action
Motion can help explain what is happening: a raised card can suggest it is available, a shadow can separate an object from the table, and a landing motion can signal that an action has finished. Movement that distracts from play or delays an interaction works against that purpose.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Keep the information available when motion is reduced. A static shadow or stronger contrast can preserve a cue that an animation would otherwise communicate, so players can still understand the interface without relying on movement.
Check the assembled screen, not just the individual assets
A visual pass needs review on the running Android build and at the crop players will actually see. An asset may look right in isolation but sit awkwardly beside text, controls, or other interface elements once everything is on screen. The title-scroll adjustment in Ithaca Rising illustrates why composition review can reveal issues that asset selection alone does not.

What was proposed, and what was still unfinished?
Adut describes a proposed 2.5D direction for Glimmerbook: retain the 2D game while adding a stronger sense of depth and tactile response. Ideas included more pronounced card shadows, visible edge thickness, a resting tilt, lift-and-press responses, and drifting light. The account explicitly says this draft had not passed device review or shipped. Earlier motion work had added card arcs and a landing feel, while story panels received subtle camera movement.
Ithaca Rising still needed a real-device gate and further work on how the voyage looked and sounded. These are project-status statements from Adut’s September 25, 2026 account, not confirmation of either game’s present build or later release status.
Quick Recap
A practical polish checklist for a Godot game
- Name the game’s visual promise. Decide what atmosphere or information the player should get from the screen; a storybook solitaire game and an action RPG call for different choices.
- Choose a small, reusable visual family. Apply compatible colors, materials, typography, icon styles, and proportions across related elements rather than decorating each control independently.
- Check every cue against the player’s task. Make it clear what can be tapped, selected, or activated, and use thematic icons only when their meaning is supported by context.
- Give motion a job. Use it to signal availability, depth, or completion; avoid movement that competes with attention or slows play, and retain static cues for reduced-motion settings.
- Review the full running build at its actual screen crop. Look for collisions, awkward spacing, and elements that compete for attention; revise the composition where needed.
- Keep project status distinct from design direction. Treat a proposed visual pass as unfinished until it has been checked in context, and do not confuse an art direction with a shipped result.
