Servoamplifier setup software gives an engineer a way to configure a compatible drive, inspect its status, and—when supported—run traces, analysis, or tuning procedures from a PC. It can make commissioning more guided and repeatable, but it does not guarantee safe operation or an optimal result: compatibility, machine safeguards, and the manufacturer’s procedure still matter.
What servoamplifier setup software does
A vendor’s setup tool communicates with supported amplifier models so an engineer can read, change, and save drive parameters. Depending on the drive and software, it may also display status, issue service commands such as JOG, capture operation traces, or analyze system response. These are product-specific capabilities, not features every digital servoamplifier provides.
For example, SANYO DENKI describes its SANMOTION MOTOR Setup Software as supporting parameter changes and saving, position- and velocity-loop proportional gain settings, motor and system parameters, graphical amplifier status, JOG operations, traces, and system analysis. The vendor lists Windows 10 and 11 support. Its connection method varies by compatible model: USB for SANMOTION R 3E and G, and RS-232C for other compatible models. Choose software for the exact drive
Do not choose a setup tool by the generic label “servo drive software.” Match the amplifier family, motor, feedback device, firmware, software version, and communications interface. A supported cable or port is also part of the compatibility check.

Yaskawa identifies SigmaWin+ Ver. 7 as the PC setup and tuning tool for its Sigma-7 SERVOPACKs, including the SGD7S EtherCAT. Yaskawa also describes product-line features such as vibration suppression, ripple and friction compensation, advanced autotuning, and tuning-less commissioning. These are manufacturer-described Sigma-7 capabilities; they should not be assumed for other drives. Product-specific details are on Yaskawa’s SGD7S EtherCAT software and firmware page.

A practical commissioning sequence
- Identify the equipment. Record the exact drive, motor, feedback device, firmware, and the manufacturer’s applicable manual and software version.
- Install and connect the supported tool. Use the specified interface and cable, then confirm communications before changing parameters.
- Enter or verify configuration data. Use authoritative equipment data for motor, feedback, supply, current limits, and machine parameters. Do not substitute guessed values.
- Establish safeguards before enabling motion. Review the machine’s commissioning procedure and put required hardware safety controls in place before using JOG, test, or other motion-capable commands. Keep the drive disabled until that procedure permits enabling it.
- Check feedback and tune in the prescribed order. Follow the drive-specific procedure, monitor measured response, and stop if motion is unexpected or the system becomes unstable.
- Save and validate. Save the accepted parameter set to the drive and to an appropriately controlled record. Validate operation using the machine’s approved commissioning procedure.
Configuration and tuning are different jobs
Correct configuration establishes what hardware the drive is controlling and how it should interpret feedback. Tuning then adjusts the control loops for the actual system. A tuning feature cannot make incorrect motor or feedback data correct, and a software wizard does not remove the need to verify the machine’s response.

Renishaw’s Digital SPA guide illustrates a product-specific sequence: configure amplifier and motor, check feedback, establish polarity, tune the current loop, and proceed to velocity- and position-loop procedures. It notes that polarity configuration moves each motor and that vibration can become apparent during current-loop excitation. In its own current-loop procedure, Renishaw cautions against overshoot and describes an over-damped response as the target. That advice and its settings apply to the described SPA equipment and process, not as a universal tuning recipe. Use tuning tools without treating them as a safety system
Some setup tools can initiate movement, so commissioning access itself can create a machine hazard. Kollmorgen’s SERVOSTAR 400/600 manual is a model-specific, legacy example: it discusses parameter setup and loop optimization, calls for an interlock acting directly on drive circuitry when commissioning through setup software, and assigns machine hazard analysis to the machine manufacturer. Its guidance is not a universal standard; follow current safety and commissioning documentation for the actual drive and machine.

- Use only the machine’s approved test conditions and movement limits.
- Stop on unexpected motion, instability, or signs of vibration rather than continuing to increase gain.
What “optimizes” means—and what it does not
Setup software can help an engineer see parameters and system behavior, apply supported tuning tools, and preserve an accepted configuration. Some vendors provide autotuning or compensation features for particular products. The word “optimize” does not mean the software independently knows the machine’s safety constraints or guarantees the best tuning for every load and application; the result depends on correct data, compatible equipment, the prescribed procedure, and validation.
Yaskawa lists a 3.1 kHz bandwidth as a Sigma-7 amplifier technology specification associated by the manufacturer with speed and precision. It is not an independently measured outcome and is not a benefit attributable to setup software alone.
