Use == to check whether two lists have the same values in the same order. To compare without regard to order, choose between set (which ignores duplicates) and Counter (which preserves item frequencies). For a difference that keeps the first list’s order, iterate that list and test membership in a set built from the second.
Choose the comparison that matches your goal
“Are these lists the same?” can mean exact sequence equality, the same distinct values, or the same values with the same counts. Decide whether order and duplicate occurrences matter before choosing a method.

How do I check whether two lists are exactly equal?
Use the equality operator:
a = [1, 2, 2]
b = [1, 2, 2]
c = [2, 1, 2]
print(a == b) # True
print(a == c) # FalsePython compares sequences by type, length, and corresponding elements. A different order or a different number of occurrences makes the lists unequal. See the Python 3.11 expressions reference.
How do I find values in one list but not another?
Get unique values absent from the second list
Convert the lists to sets and subtract:
a = ["apple", "pear", "pear", "plum"]
b = ["pear", "orange"]
missing = set(a) - set(b)
print(missing) # {'apple', 'plum'}set(a) - set(b) returns distinct values that occur in a and not in b. It is a one-way difference: reversing the operands finds values in b but not a. Use set(a) ^ set(b) for the symmetric difference—the distinct values present on either side, but not both.

Sets are unordered and discard duplicate occurrences, so do not use list(set(a) - set(b)) as a general-purpose ordered list diff. Set operations and their behavior are described in the Python 3.13 built-in types documentation.

Build a set for efficient membership checks, then filter the original list. This version emits every unmatched occurrence from a:

print(missing_in_b) # ['apple', 'plum']If a value appears twice in a and is absent from b, this list comprehension includes it twice. To emit each missing value only once while retaining the order of its first appearance, track what has already been emitted:

print(Counter(a) == Counter(b)) # True
print(Counter(a) == Counter(c)) # FalseCounter records each hashable item and its count. The first pair has the same frequencies in a different order; the second does not. In Python 3.10 and later, missing keys are treated as having a count of zero in Counter equality comparisons. See the collections documentation.
Find extra or missing occurrences
Subtracting counters gives positive count differences. For example, Counter(a) - Counter(b) reports occurrences present in a beyond those matched in b:

extra_in_a = Counter(a) - Counter(b)
print(extra_in_a) # Counter({'blue': 1})The result is a counter of counts, not a list in the original order. Reverse the operands to find occurrences missing from a relative to b. If you need a list of repeated values, expand the counts with elements(); that output follows counter order, not the original list positions.
What if list items are nested or unhashable?
Sets and counters require hashable elements. A list containing dictionaries or nested lists cannot be passed directly to either approach as a collection of keys. Direct equality, such as a == b, can still compare corresponding nested values in order.

For an order-independent comparison of nested data, first define which parts make two items equivalent, then map each item to an explicit hashable key or canonical representation. That normalization is a comparison rule: for example, ignoring a dictionary field or sorting nested values changes what counts as equal. Do not choose a key that discards distinctions your task needs to preserve.
