The first useful clue is when it appears: during ollama create, while importing or pulling a model, or only when you run an already-imported model. Use that stage and the complete error message to check the model file, its shards, and Ollama’s support for its architecture before attempting any repair.
Start with the exact error and where it occurs
Save the full terminal output, your Ollama version, the model name or repository, the model architecture if known, and the exact GGUF filenames. Note whether the failure occurs during ollama create or another import step, or only when you run the model. Ollama reads GGUF metadata during import and also reads metadata when loading model layers, so the stage helps distinguish an import problem from a later loading problem. If you have an exact message such as “unable to read GGUF metadata,” keep that wording intact when diagnosing the failure. The title alone does not identify a particular error code, model, or Ollama release, so the message and stage matter.
What GGUF metadata tells Ollama
GGUF stores model hyperparameters as typed key-value metadata, including information about the model architecture. The format specification explains: “The key difference between GGJT and GGUF is the use of a key-value structure for the hyperparameters (now referred to as metadata), rather than a list of untyped values.” Read the GGUF file format specification.

The format can accommodate metadata extensions, but that does not mean every runtime understands every architecture or every newer metadata field. A file can be valid GGUF and still be unsupported by the Ollama version you have installed.
Check the file before changing metadata
Confirm you downloaded a full model, not an adapter or vocabulary file
Compare the filename and download-page description with the model publisher’s instructions. GGUF files can contain different kinds of data, including a normal model, a LoRA adapter, or vocabulary-only data. Ollama’s current create implementation rejects adapter-kind GGUF files on that import path; an adapter is not a substitute for the base model. Check the Ollama create implementation and the repository’s instructions, then obtain the intended full model file or a compatible base model.

Check for incomplete or mismatched shards
If the model is split across multiple GGUF files, make sure every shard is present and all files belong to the same model release and quantization. Do not rename unrelated shards to make them look like a set. Replace missing, interrupted, or suspiciously incomplete downloads with a complete, coherent set from the publisher. Ollama includes handling for split GGUF layers, but the available sources do not establish a universal manual repair procedure for damaged or inconsistent shards.
Match the model architecture to your Ollama version
Check the architecture named by the model publisher and compare it with the support available in your installed Ollama release. If the error identifies an unsupported architecture or metadata field, update Ollama to a release that supports the model, or choose an export documented as compatible with your installed version. Because no specific model or Ollama version is identified here, there is no single minimum version that applies to every GGUF metadata error.

Use the right tool for GGUF quantization
Ollama’s create-time quantization option is supported only for safetensors imports, not GGUF imports. If you need to quantize a GGUF, use llama.cpp tools before importing it into Ollama. An error caused by applying Ollama’s create quantization option to a GGUF is a configuration issue, not a metadata repair.

Why editing GGUF metadata is a risky first fix
Do not change general.architecture or other metadata simply to make the error disappear unless the model publisher documents that correction. Metadata describes the model; changing an architecture label can make a file appear to parse without making its tensor layout compatible. Prefer a verified export or a supported conversion path over speculative byte-level edits.
