For Windows, Microsoft advises against disabling IPv6 casually. If your goal is to make Windows prefer IPv4, Microsoft recommends changing the protocol preference instead.
Should you disable IPv6 on your PC or router?
Choose the setting according to the problem you are trying to solve. A Windows setting applies to that PC. A router setting operates at the network gateway, but its effects depend on the router, its firmware, and the internet service setup.

Windows set to Automatic (DHCP) receives IP and DNS settings from the router or another access point, but that does not mean a router setting and a Windows protocol setting are interchangeable. See Microsoft’s explanation of Windows TCP/IP settings.
How do I turn off IPv6 in Windows?
Check the active connection’s IP settings first
In Windows 10 or 11, open Settings > Network & internet, then select the active Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection to view its IP settings. Microsoft’s settings guidance explains how to configure IP details manually; a manual IPv6 address option is not a switch that disables the IPv6 protocol. If you only want Windows to prefer IPv4
Microsoft recommends preferring IPv4 through Windows prefix policies rather than disabling IPv6. Its documented DisabledComponents value for that preference is decimal 32, or hexadecimal 0x20. This is an advanced registry configuration, not a routine Settings toggle; follow Microsoft’s instructions carefully at Configure IPv6 for Windows.
If troubleshooting requires disabling IPv6 components
Microsoft documents the registry value DisabledComponents under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesTcpip6Parameters. The documented value for disabling IPv6 components is 0xFF, and Windows must be restarted for the change to take effect. Microsoft cautions that IPv6 is a required part of Windows Vista and later, that some components may not function if it is disabled or unbound, and that IPv6 cannot be completely removed because Windows uses it internally.

Do not use the older 0xffffffff value: Microsoft identifies 0xFF as correct and warns that 0xffffffff can cause a five-second startup delay. Registry changes can affect connectivity and Windows behavior, so use this method only when you have a specific troubleshooting reason and can follow the exact Microsoft procedure. How do I disable IPv6 on my router?
There is no verified universal router menu path: settings vary by manufacturer, model, firmware, and ISP configuration. Use the manufacturer’s instructions for your exact router model rather than relying on generic menu names.

- Find the router’s make and exact model, and identify its firmware if the manufacturer’s instructions require it.
- Sign in to the router administration interface using the manufacturer’s documented method.
- Look for IPv6 or internet configuration only if the exact-device manual documents such a setting.
- Read the model-specific explanation of what the setting changes, then apply it only if it addresses your issue.
A router’s IPv6 control should not be assumed to disable IPv6 on Windows itself or to make every client and upstream service IPv4-only. The router may provide network settings to Windows clients, but the available evidence does not establish a universal network-wide effect for a router switch.

Which approach should you use?
- One Windows PC has a problem: start by checking that computer’s connection settings. If the aim is simply to prefer IPv4, Microsoft’s documented prefix-policy preference is the more suitable direction than disabling IPv6 components.
- Several devices have a problem: investigate the gateway and ISP setup, then use only the instructions for the exact router model. Do not infer that changing a Windows setting will fix other devices.
- You are not sure which layer is responsible: avoid changing both at once. A one-PC issue and a network-wide issue point to different scopes, and changing one setting at a time makes the result easier to diagnose.
