To send someone to a specific screen after they install your iOS app, you need more than a Universal Link. Universal Links handle app-to-website association and direct opening when the app is already installed. A deferred deep-link service adds a way to recover the original link’s destination after an App Store install, deliver it to the app, and let your code route the user safely.

What deferred deep linking adds to Universal Links

A Universal Link is a standard HTTPS link associated with both your website and your app. When a user taps it and your app is installed, iOS can open the app and provide the link context. When the app is not installed, the link can open the website instead. Apple describes this association and direct-link behavior in its documentation, “Allowing apps and websites to link to your content” and “Supporting universal links in your app.”

That direct association does not, by itself, preserve the original destination through an App Store install. After a user leaves the link, installs the app, and opens it for the first time, the app needs a separate post-install context-recovery mechanism if it is to learn which content the user originally requested. Deferred-link SDKs and services provide that mechanism; they are separate from the Universal Link handling that opens an already-installed app.

The two paths to support

Scenario What happens What your app must handle
App already installed The user taps the HTTPS link; iOS may open the associated app and pass link context through an NSUserActivity. Receive the browsing activity, validate its URL and parameters, and map a supported destination to an app screen.
App not installed The user reaches the website or is sent to the App Store. After installation and first launch, a deferred-link service attempts to recover the click’s destination and deliver link data to the app. Initialize the relevant SDK, handle its callback, validate the returned data, and route when the app is ready.

Set up Universal Links for direct app opening

Universal Links require a two-way association: your website must associate the relevant domain with your app, and the app must declare that it supports the domain. Add the Associated Domains capability and configure the site association for the link domain. Apple’s “Supporting universal links in your app” explains that an activated Universal Link is delivered as an NSUserActivity; handle that activity in the app and extract only the URL data your routing layer supports.

If a managed link provider supplies a link subdomain, configure the association for that domain as well as any first-party domains you use. AppsFlyer’s “iOS initial setup” documents its provider-specific pattern: obtain the link subdomain, add an applinks: entry to the entitlement, configure the site association, and test on a device. The exact host and setup depend on the provider and your domain configuration.

A custom URL scheme can be a fallback for some integrations, but it is not equivalent to a Universal Link. AppsFlyer cautions that schemes can collide because they are not uniquely enforced. Prefer the associated HTTPS domain for Universal Link entry, and treat a scheme as an explicitly designed fallback rather than proof of a secure or exclusive app identity.

How the post-install recovery flow works

  1. Create and distribute a deferred-capable link. The link must be configured with the provider and destination data your app expects. Decide in advance which stable route identifier and parameters the app will consume.
  2. The user taps the link. If the app is absent, the link flow can direct the user toward the App Store. The provider records the click information needed for its deferred-link process.
  3. The user installs and opens the app. On launch, initialize the provider SDK as documented for your integration. The SDK sends the session or attribution requests needed by that service.
  4. The service attempts to match the install to the earlier click. If it resolves the relationship, it returns deferred-link data to the SDK. The returned information and callback behavior depend on the provider and integration.
  5. Your callback validates and retains the destination. Treat the callback as a request to navigate, not as permission to perform an action. If startup, login, or onboarding is incomplete, store the intended route in app state and wait.
  6. Route at an eligible point in the app lifecycle. Once the app is ready and any required authentication or onboarding is complete, re-check access and navigate to the approved screen.

Adjust’s “Set up deferred deep linking” describes this click-to-store-to-install sequence and a callback that lets the app decide whether the SDK should open the link immediately or leave processing to the app. For apps with onboarding or login, its guidance is to retain the deferred link and route after those steps. AppsFlyer’s Unified Deep Linking (UDL) uses an app-open-triggered SDK call to retrieve OneLink data and invokes didResolveDeepLink() with a result indicating found, not found, or failure.

Validate link data before routing

Whether link data arrives from a Universal Link or a deferred-link callback, it is external input. Apple explicitly warns developers to validate URL parameters. A link may request a screen, but it must not bypass normal authorization or trigger an unsafe operation.

  • Allow-list route identifiers. Map known values such as a product or article route to screens your app actually implements. Reject unknown route names instead of interpreting arbitrary strings as navigation instructions.
  • Validate every parameter. Check type, length, format, and allowed values. For identifiers, confirm that the value is well-formed before using it in a lookup or request.
  • Check user permissions at route time. A valid destination does not mean the signed-in user is entitled to view it. Apply the same authorization rules used for ordinary in-app navigation.
  • Keep sensitive actions behind normal controls. Do not let a link alone submit a purchase, change account settings, delete data, or perform another consequential action.
  • Define failure behavior. If data is malformed, unsupported, missing, or unmatched, show a safe default screen or continue the standard launch flow rather than leaving the app in a broken navigation state.

Handle onboarding, login, and app readiness

Resolve the link early enough to retain it, but do not navigate before the app can present the destination. Model a pending destination as app state with an explicit lifecycle: received, validated, waiting for prerequisites, and consumed or discarded. This avoids losing the request when the user must first complete onboarding or sign in.

  1. On callback, validate the route and parameters and store a normalized destination—not an unchecked raw URL as executable routing logic.
  2. Determine whether the user must complete onboarding, authenticate, or satisfy another access condition.
  3. Resume the stored destination after those conditions are met, then check authorization again before displaying protected content.
  4. Clear or mark the pending destination as consumed after successful routing, and define whether a later app launch should retry an unconsumed request.

Keep the provider callback separate from the screen-navigation implementation. That makes it easier to delay routing, handle a callback that arrives during startup, and give direct Universal Links and deferred links a common validated route format.

Choose a deferred-link implementation by its behavior

Compare integrations against the behavior your product needs, not just whether a vendor advertises “deep links.” Direct opening, post-install destination recovery, and ad attribution are related but distinct functions.

Option or documented behavior What it covers Decision point
Apple Universal Links Website/app association and direct handling of an activated HTTPS link when the app is installed; an absent app can fall back to the website. Use for direct app opening and web fallback. It does not alone recover the destination after an App Store install.
Adjust deferred-link flow Adjust documents click, store, install/open, service matching, and a callback that can leave timing under app control. Check callback lifecycle and how you will hold the destination through onboarding or login.
AppsFlyer UDL AppsFlyer documents OneLink retrieval on app open and the didResolveDeepLink() callback. The documented iOS SDK prerequisite is version 6.1 or later. Plan route values and parameters around the fields UDL actually returns, and confirm behavior against the SDK version you ship.
Branch Universal Link guidance Branch documents Universal Link activation caveats and troubleshooting for certain taps and embedded contexts. Verify the channels and in-app browsers your users actually use; link behavior can vary by entry point.
Ad attribution Apple’s AdAttributionKit documentation covers ad measurement windows and postbacks. Do not treat an attribution record or postback as the mechanism that carries an arbitrary destination into your app after install.

Check parameter availability for new and existing users

Do not assume every click or campaign field will be available to every callback. AppsFlyer says UDL requires iOS SDK v6.1 or later. For new users, its UDL callback returns deep_link_value and deep_link_sub1 through deep_link_sub10; other attribution parameters, including media source and campaign, return null in this method. Coordinate parameter names with the marketing team and route using the destination fields the app is designed to consume. For any other user state or provider, confirm the callback’s documented field set rather than inferring it from attribution dashboards.

Separate destination routing from attribution

A routing callback answers a product question: which screen should the app attempt to show? Attribution answers a measurement question: which ad interaction may be credited for an install or later event? Apple’s AdAttributionKit documentation states a 30-day click-through attribution window for an install after an ad click, a 24-hour view-through window after an ad view, and postbacks that can arrive within 24–48 hours of an app launch. Those timing rules describe ad measurement and reporting; they are not a general-purpose deferred destination payload.

Test real entry points and failure cases

A link that works when pasted into a browser’s address field may not behave like a Universal Link activated by an ordinary user tap. Branch’s Universal Links guidance, updated August 20, 2026, documents cases in which links may not activate as expected, including a pasted address, a click to a link on the same domain, JavaScript-triggered clicks without a user action, and some in-app browser contexts. It describes embedded webview behavior as conditional and suggests an intermediate page with a user-action button in some cases. AppsFlyer also notes that Universal Links work when clicked and that social-app support can vary. Verify these documented constraints against the app versions, channels, and webviews your product supports.

Test matrix

  • Direct link, app installed: Tap from the actual email, messaging app, ad, or website entry point and verify the expected screen and parameters.
  • Deferred link, fresh install: Start from a device without the app, tap the link, install from the App Store, launch, and verify the callback and destination.
  • Prerequisite delay: Repeat with onboarding and login required. Confirm the destination is retained and resumed only after the user is eligible.
  • No-match and error results: Exercise callback outcomes where no deferred link is found or resolution fails; verify the ordinary launch flow remains usable.
  • Malformed or unsupported values: Test missing identifiers, unexpected route names, invalid formats, and unauthorized destinations.
  • Reinstall behavior: Test reinstall scenarios separately and verify the provider’s documented behavior for the account and device states relevant to your app.
  • Channel-specific behavior: Test physical devices using the actual social app, embedded browser, email client, webview, or wrapped tracking link your users will tap. Do not rely only on simulator tests or a pasted URL.

Follow the vendor’s device-registration and debug requirements. AppsFlyer documents device registration and testing prerequisites for UDL, and its initial setup guide recommends testing on a device. Keep direct installed-app tests separate from post-install tests: success in one path does not establish that the other path is working.

Common integration failures and how to diagnose them

  • The app opens, but no deferred destination arrives: Confirm that the link was created for deferred handling, the right SDK is initialized on first launch, and the provider’s device or debug setup is satisfied. Inspect the callback’s found, not found, or failure result instead of assuming every launch has a match.
  • A direct link opens the website instead of the app: Check the domain-to-app association, the app’s Associated Domains entitlement, and whether the user tapped the HTTPS link from an entry point that activates Universal Links. Reproduce on a device through the target channel.
  • The app navigates before login or onboarding finishes: Change the callback path to save a validated pending route, then consume it after the app reaches the required state.
  • Campaign or source fields are empty: Distinguish attribution fields from route fields and confirm the callback’s documented parameter availability for the user state being tested. In AppsFlyer UDL, media source and campaign are null for new users in this method.
  • Links work in one channel but not another: Investigate the entry channel and whether the tap is a user action, same-domain navigation, or embedded-browser handoff. Use an intermediate page with a deliberate tap only where that behavior is appropriate and tested.

Implementation checklist

  • Configure the website/app association and Associated Domains for every Universal Link domain.
  • Choose a deferred-link mechanism if the app must recover a destination after installation.
  • Define a small, stable route schema and agree on parameter names with teams that create links.
  • Handle direct Universal Link activities and provider callbacks through a shared validation and routing layer.
  • Retain a pending route through authentication or onboarding and enforce authorization before display.
  • Verify SDK version requirements, callback outcomes, test-device setup, and parameter availability in the provider’s current documentation.
  • Test fresh installs, installed-app links, reinstall behavior, realistic user taps, malformed input, and safe fallbacks on physical devices.
