No—not on the evidence available. Meta is putting more emphasis on Muse and AI glasses, but its September 2026 announcements also described new VR hardware and continued to position Quest as a gateway to the metaverse. That points to a shift in emphasis, not proof that the metaverse has been replaced—or that people have forgotten it.
What is Meta Muse?
Meta describes Muse as a personal AI agent launched earlier in September 2026. Its product page says Muse can answer questions, complete tasks, browse the web, make purchases, generate images, create documents, and connect to apps and services. Those are Meta’s descriptions, not independent test results or a promise that every capability is available for every account or location. See Meta’s Muse page.
Meta announced that it plans to bring Muse to AI glasses in the coming months. The proposed interaction is conversational and tied to what the wearer sees: a person could ask about something in view and ask Muse to act on it. That was a planned integration in Meta’s September announcement, not confirmation that it is already available. Check Meta’s announcement for the current rollout status.
Muse is not the same name as Muse Spark
Meta uses Muse Spark for the first model in a new model series, which it said powers Meta AI. Muse is the name Meta gives the user-facing personal agent on its later product page. Meta’s May 2026 update said Muse Spark was gradually rolling out on Ray-Ban Meta and Oakley Meta glasses in the United States and Canada; that does not establish availability of every Muse feature or the later announced Muse integration. See Meta’s Muse Spark announcement and its May glasses update.

What does Meta mean by “the metaverse”?
Meta’s own explanation treats the metaverse as a vision for social connection spanning familiar 2D experiences, digital experiences projected into the physical world, and immersive 3D spaces. It says people could access it through phones, computers, and VR devices. That is Meta’s aspirational framing, not a universally settled definition. In Meta’s words, “The metaverse is the next evolution in social connection and the successor to the mobile Internet.” Read Meta’s explanation with that attribution in mind.
Meta’s current overview describes VR uses including fitness, gaming, social connection, entertainment, and productivity. It calls Quest a gateway to the metaverse and says AI glasses can become gateways too. The company therefore presents glasses and VR as possible ways into a broad set of connected experiences, even as its near-term announcements give AI a more prominent role. See Meta’s metaverse overview.

How do Muse and the metaverse differ?
| Dimension | Muse and AI glasses | Meta’s metaverse vision |
|---|---|---|
| Interaction | A conversational, task-oriented agent that can respond to questions and, as Meta describes it, help carry out tasks. | Shared digital experiences, ranging from 2D to projected and immersive 3D environments. |
| Devices | Meta describes Muse as a personal agent and announced plans to bring it to AI glasses; availability depends on rollout and region. | Meta identifies phones, computers, and VR devices as access points, and calls Quest a gateway. |
| Use cases | Meta lists assistance such as browsing, purchases, image generation, documents, and connections to apps and services. | Meta lists fitness, gaming, social connection, entertainment, and productivity for VR. |
| Evidence of availability | Meta described the glasses integration as forthcoming in September 2026; the announcement does not establish current availability in every region or account. | Meta’s overview describes Quest and VR use cases, but does not by itself establish adoption, commercial success, or investment scale. |
The visions can overlap: an AI agent may be accessed through glasses, while Meta describes glasses as potential access devices for its broader connected-world vision. But an assistant that helps with everyday tasks is not the same product experience as entering a shared, immersive VR environment.
Is Meta abandoning the metaverse for AI?
Meta’s September 2026 Connect announcement foregrounded AI glasses and Muse, but it also covered Meta VR Glasses, new AI-glasses models and styles, and continuing updates to Meta Ray-Ban Display. Meta’s stated plans included “more than 100 styles of AI glasses” by the end of 2026; that is a company-stated target, not a count of models already shipping. It also described its announced Meta VR Glasses as weighing “about 100 grams,” an approximate company-reported figure. Neither number measures audience interest or proves that one strategy has displaced another. The announcement is at Meta’s Connect 2026 page.

Meta’s official metaverse pages continue to describe Quest and VR as central to social and immersive experiences. Company pages are useful evidence of how Meta positions its products, but they cannot establish how much the company is investing or whether those products are succeeding. The clearest supported reading is that AI is receiving greater prominence alongside continuing VR activity—not that Meta has declared the metaverse over.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can we tell whether people have forgotten the metaverse?
No audience-attention or adoption measure in the available sources answers that question. Meta’s announcements show what the company says it is building and how it presents its products; they do not reveal whether the public has stopped thinking about the metaverse, whether interest has changed, or whether Muse has caused any such change. The title works as a question about Meta’s changing product narrative, not as an established claim about public memory.
