An AI coding agent should identify the Next.js version and router in a project before choosing documentation or writing framework-specific code. A practical freshness gate checks the installed package, prefers documentation shipped with that release, and treats runtime inspection as a separate check—not a substitute for API documentation.
Why an agent needs a freshness gate
Next.js changes over time, so an answer drawn from generic model memory or the current online docs may not match the version a project actually uses. Version-matched documentation reduces that mismatch risk, but it cannot guarantee that every answer is correct.
The Next.js agent guide’s managed instruction block says, “This is NOT the Next.js you know,” then tells the agent to read the guide for the project’s installed version before coding. That is a useful principle: establish what the project runs, then choose the evidence that fits it.
Identify the project’s version and router first
Before suggesting a Next.js API or file convention, the agent should resolve the installed next package version from the project’s package metadata or installation. It should also establish whether the task concerns the App Router or Pages Router. The official Next.js documentation describes App Router as the newer router, with support for newer React features such as Server Components; Pages Router remains supported and continues to be improved.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Router context matters beyond directory structure. React version handling differs: App Router uses built-in React canary releases, while Pages Router uses the React version installed in the project’s package metadata. A framework answer that ignores the router can therefore miss relevant behavior even when it has the right Next.js release.
Choose documentation that matches the installed release
The Next.js team’s guide for AI coding agents describes a release-dependent documentation path:

| Installed Next.js release | Documentation and instruction path | What the agent should do |
|---|---|---|
| 16.3 and later | Docs are bundled at node_modules/next/dist/docs/; managed agent instructions are enabled by default. |
Read the instructions and use the bundled, version-matched docs for the task. |
| 16.2 | Docs are bundled at node_modules/next/dist/docs/, but the guide does not say managed instructions are automatically generated. |
Use the bundled docs; do not assume the managed instructions exist by default. |
| 16.1 and earlier | The guide says these releases do not bundle docs. It describes npx @next/codemod@canary agents-md as a legacy setup path for version-matched docs. |
Use an available version-matched source. If one is unavailable, disclose that limitation instead of treating generic latest docs as confirmed for the project. |
The guide says bundled documentation mirrors the online documentation structure and is updated when Next.js is upgraded. For online access, it documents appending .md to a page URL or requesting Markdown with an Accept: text/markdown header. It also points to the documentation indexes /docs/llms.txt and /docs/llms-full.txt. These online options are useful retrieval formats, but the agent still needs to check whether the content is for the installed release.
What to do when matching docs are missing
Not every older installation has local bundled documentation. Next.js describes the legacy agents-md command for setting up version-matched docs, while Vercel’s next-devtools-mcp repository describes a generic online-docs fallback and reminds agents to verify against the installed version.

A safe gate should make the distinction visible. If the available source is unversioned or does not establish compatibility with the project’s release, the agent can explain that version-specific verification is incomplete, avoid presenting uncertain APIs as confirmed, and identify what would unblock the answer: the installed version, a matching documentation source, or both. This is a practical implementation recommendation, not a rule stated verbatim by Next.js. A missing source should not trigger blanket refusal if the matching documentation is already available.
Use runtime inspection to verify the project, not define the API
Documentation and runtime evidence answer different questions. The docs explain intended API semantics; inspection of a running project can establish what is happening in that particular project. The DevTools repository says Next.js 16 and later expose an MCP endpoint at /_next/mcp and describes tools for discovering a development server and querying runtime details such as routes, errors, and logs.

Such as compatible with MacBook Pro/Air 2023/2022, Thunderbolt 4/3 Devices,Apple MagSafe Watch 9/8/7/SE/Ultra, iPad Pro 2022/2021, Samsung Galaxy S23/S20/S10, and iPhone 17/16/15 Pro. Plug and play
- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
An agent can use those observations to check project-specific behavior, then report exactly what it inspected. A route appearing in runtime metadata or an error appearing in server logs does not, by itself, establish the documented semantics of an API. Runtime checks should corroborate documentation rather than replace it.

- Resolve the installed version. Read project package metadata or otherwise establish which
nextpackage is installed. - Establish router and task context. Identify App Router or Pages Router and the feature area relevant to the question.
- Select the strongest matching docs. Prefer documentation bundled with the installed package; otherwise seek a version-matched source.
- Label incomplete evidence. If only generic docs are available, say that version-specific verification is incomplete and avoid asserting uncertain APIs as confirmed.
- Check live behavior separately when relevant. Inspect development-server and browser evidence, and distinguish what was observed from what the docs specify.
- Explain any refusal precisely. Name the missing or conflicting version/source evidence and say what would allow the agent to proceed.
The Next.js guide cites an evaluation reporting a 100% pass rate with bundled documentation, compared with up to 79% for Skill-based approaches. The passage does not provide a sample size or enough methodology to judge how broadly that result applies, so it should be read as the Next.js team’s reported evaluation—not a universal guarantee or an independently verified benchmark.
How versioned retrieval tools fit
Context7 describes version-scoped library documentation when a version is included in a query. That can be a retrieval option when local docs are unavailable, but the description establishes a possible workflow, not the quality or completeness of coverage for a particular Next.js release. The governing check remains whether the retrieved material matches the project’s version and router.
