The resulting patterns help the model predict and produce language. Researchers can study those patterns, but describing a pattern as a feature is not proof that the model experiences or understands meaning as a person does.
What “meaning” can mean
The question has more than one possible answer. “Meaning” might refer to a person’s subjective experience, the conventions people use to communicate, the way a word is used in a particular sentence, or information encoded in a model’s internal state. These ideas are related, but they are not interchangeable.
For a transformer, the most directly testable sense is the last one: how learned internal representations change during computation and how those changes relate to the model’s behavior. That account can explain how a model uses context without claiming that its internal state is identical to human understanding.
How a transformer builds context-sensitive representations
It starts with token positions and numerical representations
A transformer does not manipulate dictionary definitions directly. It processes a sequence of tokens represented numerically. A token’s representation is not a fixed, complete definition of the word: the computation that follows can change what information the representation carries in a particular context.

Self-attention lets positions draw on other positions
Self-attention provides a way for the representation at one position to incorporate information from other positions in the sequence. That makes it possible for context elsewhere in a sentence to affect how a token is represented. For example, the surrounding words can help distinguish different uses of an ambiguous word.
The original Transformer paper by Vaswani and colleagues, published in 2017, introduced a sequence-transduction architecture based on attention rather than recurrent or convolutional layers. It illustrated attention heads associated with behaviors such as tracking long-distance dependencies and anaphora. Those examples show that attention can play useful roles in processing relationships between positions; they do not make an attention map a complete explanation of what a model understands.

Layers repeatedly transform the representations
Attention is one part of the computation. Learned transformations are applied through successive layers, so later internal states reflect more than a single token or a single attention interaction. It is more accurate to describe these as evolving patterns in the model’s state than as a sequence of explicit dictionary lookups.
The architecture does not establish that every layer corresponds to a fixed linguistic stage—such as one layer for grammar and another for meaning. A layer’s role cannot be inferred reliably from its position alone.

Where meaning is represented: across patterns, not one “meaning neuron”
It is tempting to imagine that a word or concept has one dedicated place inside a model. Interpretability research points to a more distributed picture. In its 2024 study of Claude 3.0 Sonnet, Anthropic reported extracting millions of features from the model’s middle layer and described concepts as represented across many neurons, with individual neurons involved in representing many concepts.
A feature is a recurring pattern identified in activations—the numerical activity produced inside the model. Feature labels are researchers’ descriptions of those patterns, not labels the model necessarily stores in human-readable form. Anthropic also reported that amplifying or suppressing identified features could affect the studied model’s outputs. That is evidence that interventions on those features can influence behavior; it does not show that a feature captures every aspect of a concept.

Why simple accounts of attention can mislead
An attention pattern can be informative: it may show which token positions interact in a particular computation. But observing such a pattern is not the same as explaining the model’s full behavior. Other transformations, other layers, and distributed representations also contribute.
Anthropic’s 2023 discussion of distributed representations treats composition and superposition as distinct aspects that can coexist and involve a trade-off. Composition concerns how simpler features can combine into more complex representations; superposition concerns how representations can share limited neural capacity. Together, these ideas make it harder to interpret any one activation or attention map as a self-contained account of a concept.

An Anthropic Interpretability team update on attention in 2025 reported preliminary evidence involving attention superposition and cross-layer representations. The team characterized this as developing work and identified understanding why attention patterns form as an open problem. It is therefore useful to treat attention visualizations as evidence about part of a computation, not as a direct readout of what an AI “understands.”
What benchmark scores do—and do not—say about meaning
The original Transformer paper reported 28.4 BLEU for its large Transformer on the WMT 2014 English-to-German translation benchmark. BLEU is a translation evaluation metric. The result is evidence about performance on that task, not a measurement of semantic understanding or subjective experience.
Similarly, Anthropic’s report of millions of extracted features describes the scale of a feature-analysis method applied to Claude 3.0 Sonnet. It is not a count of human-validated meanings. A model can perform language tasks and exhibit analyzable internal patterns without those measures settling what “understanding” means philosophically.
A careful answer to the question
Meaning in a transformer, in the operational sense, comes from learned patterns in numerical representations that are repeatedly updated as information moves through the model. Context helps shape those patterns, and interpretability methods can identify and test some of them. What remains unsettled is how fully any identified feature explains a concept—and whether model representations amount to human-like understanding. The architecture and interpretability evidence support claims about computation and behavior, not a definitive answer to the philosophy of meaning.
