Samsung says 2016 and later Smart TVs run Tizen applications only, so the practical choices are to route the TV through a VPN-configured router, share a VPN connection from a Windows PC, or use a provider’s Smart DNS feature if its limits suit you. These approaches are not interchangeable, and provider support documents do not establish a universal “best” VPN or guarantee streaming access.
Can you install a VPN on a Samsung Smart TV?
For the typical Samsung Tizen TV, there is no direct VPN-app installation route. Samsung Developer states that “2016 and later Samsung Smart TVs are distributed with and can run Tizen applications only.” A Samsung Community accepted answer likewise says a VPN app cannot be installed on Samsung Smart TVs and points to router use as an alternative. A separate Samsung Community discussion notes that app developers choose which ecosystems their apps support; community guidance is not a full compatibility specification.
That does not mean you cannot use a VPN with the TV. Instead, the TV needs to connect through a device or network that handles the VPN connection. Check your exact TV model, router and provider instructions before choosing a setup.
Three VPN providers with documented Samsung TV connection options
The comparison below describes support documented by the providers, not hands-on testing. It is not a speed, value, privacy-audit or streaming-access ranking.

These are the providers for which the available documentation establishes relevant setup routes. It does not support naming five tested winners or claiming that any provider will work with every router, Samsung model, region or streaming service.
Choose the connection method that fits your setup
VPN-capable router: coverage through the network
A compatible router can carry the Samsung TV’s traffic through the VPN. NordVPN lists router installation for Samsung TV, and ExpressVPN describes router use as full VPN protection. The router must support VPN-client configuration, and the provider must supply instructions or settings compatible with that router or its firmware.

- Check the router’s documentation for VPN-client support; VPN-server support alone is not the same capability.
- Confirm that the provider supports your router model or firmware and follow its configuration instructions.
- Connect the television to the configured router or network, then check the VPN connection and the intended app on your TV and in your region.
The cited guidance does not validate any particular router model. A router setup may also affect other devices connected to that network, depending on how the router is configured.
Windows PC sharing: use the computer as the network bridge
NordVPN documents wireless hotspot and Ethernet connection-sharing methods for Samsung TV. These are PC-side workarounds: the VPN runs through the computer’s network connection, rather than as an app on Tizen. Follow the provider’s Windows instructions, connect the TV to the shared connection, and verify that both the VPN and the TV app behave as intended. The documented route does not establish compatibility with every PC configuration.

Smart DNS: a different tool, not an encrypted VPN tunnel
Smart DNS changes network settings to support certain region-related streaming functions; it does not provide the same VPN tunnel or encryption. ExpressVPN explicitly says MediaStreamer does not provide VPN encryption. NordVPN also documents SmartDNS as a separate content-access method that requires network configuration. Whether it works depends on the provider’s instructions and the streaming service’s behavior.
Surfshark’s support information says its Smart DNS feature ended February 2, 2026. That dated change makes older setup pages recommending Surfshark Smart DNS unreliable as current instructions.

When an external streaming device makes more sense
If you want to control a VPN through an app on a streaming platform, a separate device may be an option rather than trying to install the app on the Samsung TV. NordVPN lists a native app for Amazon Fire TV devices. That app runs on the Fire TV device; it does not add a VPN app to the television’s Tizen system. Check the device and VPN support for your location and intended services before buying or configuring anything.

What these compatibility claims do—and do not—tell you
- Provider setup pages establish that a provider documents a route; they do not prove performance on your home network or compatibility with every router or TV.
- A VPN connection does not guarantee uninterrupted access to a particular streaming service or catalog. Services may change how they handle VPN traffic.
- Smart DNS should not be treated as VPN encryption or full VPN routing.
- Availability, provider features, and app support can change. Verify the current provider instructions and service behavior before relying on a setup.
