For ZFS, choose a cache or auxiliary device only after identifying the bottleneck: add RAM first if the ARC is under pressure; consider L2ARC for random reads of mostly static data that exceeds RAM; consider a SLOG only when synchronous-write latency is a problem. A special vdev is different: it stores data persistently, so it is not a cache. “SIL” is not identified in the cited ZFS documentation as one of these device classes; this article covers L2ARC, ZIL/SLOG, and special vdevs.

What each ZFS device does

ZFS already caches reads in RAM using the Adaptive Replacement Cache (ARC). Two optional devices are often confused with one another: L2ARC extends read caching, while a SLOG provides a separate location for the ZFS Intent Log (ZIL), which supports synchronous-write durability. A special vdev is a persistent storage class rather than a cache. OpenZFS’s documentation on caching and auxiliary devices explains these roles.

  • ARC: The in-memory read cache. Dataset property primarycache controls which blocks may enter it: all, metadata, or none.
  • L2ARC: An optional second-level read cache on a cache vdev. Dataset property secondarycache controls which blocks may enter it.
  • ZIL: The log ZFS uses to make synchronous writes stable before an operation returns. It exists whether or not a separate log device is configured.
  • SLOG: A separate log vdev that holds ZIL records. It is used for synchronous writes and read after a crash to replay writes not yet committed to the main pool; it is not a general write cache.
  • Special vdev: A persistent allocation class that can hold metadata, indirect blocks, deduplication tables, and, if configured, small file blocks. Blocks allocated there live on that vdev.

Choose by workload, not by device name

Option Consider it when Main constraint or risk Check first
More RAM / ARC ARC misses or the working set is putting pressure on memory. Hardware and platform budget. ARC size and system memory pressure.
L2ARC The working set exceeds RAM and reads are random and mostly static. Each cached block needs an ARC header; L2ARC can consume memory and does not help writes. Read pattern, working-set size, and ARC memory headroom.
SLOG A sync-heavy workload, such as an NFS server, database, or VM host, has synchronous-write latency issues. Only synchronous writes use it; the device should have low latency and power-loss protection. Whether sync writes occur, dataset sync and logbias settings, and actual write latency.
Special vdev Metadata-heavy access on a pool where metadata placement could help. It stores persistent data and must be redundant; removal is restricted on raidz pools. Redundancy design and pool topology.

OpenZFS calls RAM its most effective ZFS tuning knob and recommends checking ARC capacity before adding L2ARC. Its guidance describes L2ARC as useful for a working set much larger than RAM with random reads of mostly static content. Neither device should be treated as a guaranteed speed upgrade; results depend on the workload and system.

When L2ARC is worth considering

L2ARC can help keep frequently reread blocks available when the useful read working set is larger than RAM. It is a poor match for write-bound workloads, sequential reads that already stream efficiently, or data that changes too often to benefit from remaining cached.

Account for the memory cost

Every block cached in L2ARC requires metadata in ARC. On a memory-constrained system, a large L2ARC can reduce the RAM available to the primary cache and undermine the benefit it was meant to provide. Check ARC behavior and memory pressure before adding capacity.

Understand persistence and failure behavior

L2ARC contents can survive a reboot and are restored asynchronously when the pool is imported; rebuilding can be disabled. OpenZFS documents that cache devices smaller than 1 GiB do not receive the metadata structures needed for that rebuild. L2ARC devices cannot be mirrored or placed in raidz, and losing one is harmless to pool data because reads can be issued again from the main pool. See the OpenZFS zpoolconcepts(7) manual page for the cache-device constraints.

When a SLOG can help—and what it cannot do

A SLOG can improve the latency of synchronous writes when its device has lower latency than the pool’s normal write path. OpenZFS identifies NFS servers, databases, and VM hosts with sync-heavy guests as workloads that may benefit, and recommends a low-latency device with power-loss protection. A workload without synchronous writes has no SLOG use case.

The ZIL is present on every pool; by default, it is allocated from the main pool. Adding a separate log vdev moves that log workload to a dedicated device. The FreeBSD Handbook describes the ZIL as an on-disk record used to replay synchronous writes after a crash. See the FreeBSD Handbook’s ZFS chapter.

Check dataset behavior before evaluating hardware

The dataset property logbias=throughput bypasses log devices for that dataset. The setting sync=disabled skips the ZIL and trades the durability of recent writes for speed. Do not use sync=disabled as a casual performance fix: it changes what happens to recent writes after a failure.

Size with workload evidence

OpenZFS’s workload-tuning guidance gives about 4 GB as an arbitrary SLOG partition example for many systems, not a universal capacity requirement. It advises that workloads needing more should not size the SLOG beyond maximum ARC, and says overprovisioning spare area on NAND-flash SLOG devices can increase IOPS. Treat this as the project’s documented guidance, not a substitute for measuring the specific workload or checking the documentation for the OpenZFS version in use. OpenZFS Workload Tuning.

Why a special vdev is not another cache

A special vdev can place metadata and selected other block classes on faster storage, which may help metadata-heavy workloads. But unlike L2ARC, it holds the pool’s persistent data allocations. Its failure can therefore threaten pool data, so OpenZFS says it should be as redundant as the rest of the pool. Removal is also restricted on raidz pools. Consider one only with a deliberate redundancy and topology plan—not as a disposable performance cache.

A practical decision sequence

  1. Measure the problem. Determine whether the limiting work is reads, synchronous writes, or metadata access; do not select a device based on a generic “cache” label.
  2. Check ARC and memory pressure. If the read cache is constrained by RAM, assess whether more memory is the better first change.
  3. Match the device to the I/O pattern. Consider L2ARC for oversized, mostly static random-read working sets; consider SLOG only for sync-heavy writes with latency problems; consider a special vdev only for persistent metadata or selected-block placement.
  4. Review pool and dataset settings. Inspect sync, logbias, cache properties, pool topology, OpenZFS version, and operating system before changing configuration.
  5. Plan for failure and recovery. Treat special-vdev redundancy as essential, confirm SLOG power-loss protection, and understand that L2ARC loss requires rereading from the pool rather than recovering unique data.
