In a Zulip Microsoft Teams importer, a generator reused and cleared a batch list after yielding it. The importer’s current caller handled each batch immediately, so it did not expose the problem. A consumer that retained the yielded batches could silently lose earlier messages. The lesson is to test what a function promises—not only how today’s caller happens to use it.
What went wrong in Zulip’s Teams importer?
In an August 5, 2026 case study, contributor Sergei Parfenov described a bug in get_batched_export_message_data(), a generator in Zulip’s Microsoft Teams importer. It built a mutable list of messages, yielded that list, then cleared the same list before collecting the next batch. The current caller processed each batch before requesting another one, so it did not encounter the failure. But the function’s interface also allowed a consumer to retain batches—for example, by calling list(generator).
Because every yield exposed the same list object, advancing the generator changed the contents of batches already retained by the consumer. By the time iteration finished, those references showed only the final batch. The failure was silent data corruption, not an exception. Parfenov’s account describes a one-shot migration context where missing messages could go unnoticed without an independent check of the result.
A small example of the failure
Parfenov’s illustration groups twelve values into batches of five. The intended output is three independent lists: [0, 1, 2, 3, 4], [5, 6, 7, 8, 9], and [10, 11]. With the old implementation, collecting all yields instead produced three references to the same list, each showing [10, 11] after iteration finished.

In the importer’s test dataset, the old behavior left 24 of 29 messages when the new regression assertion was applied. Those counts describe this particular test, not a general rate of data loss or latent bugs.
Why fix a bug that never fires?
“Latent” describes the caller, not the function, Parfenov argues. A caller that consumes each value immediately can mask a defect in an interface that permits values to be kept. If the function’s reasonable use cases include retaining outputs, its behavior should remain correct in that case too.

This is especially important when an operation can finish without an error and without an obvious signal that data disappeared. A successful run is not evidence that every input appeared in the result. When a function returns batches, a useful contract is that each batch remains stable after it is yielded, and that the batches collectively contain the expected items in the expected order.
What changed in the fix?
The generator now starts a fresh list for the next batch instead of clearing the list it has already yielded. That gives the consumer a stable object to retain, while preserving the function’s list-based interface. The Zulip pull request describes this as handing ownership of each yielded list to the consumer. The author identifies one new list allocation per batch as the direct implementation cost; the sources provide no benchmark or measured performance impact. The pull request was shown as open when reported, so its proposed change should not be described as merged or shipped.

How to test the function’s contract
Do not only exercise a generator in the same incremental pattern as its current caller. Retain its outputs, then check both how many items were produced and their exact sequence. That makes later mutation of a previously yielded batch observable.
- Materialize the generator. In the regression test, collect the batches so earlier yields remain referenced while the generator advances.
- Check the total count. Sum the lengths of all batches and compare the result with the expected message count. This catches missing items even when iteration raised no error.
- Check exact contents and order. Flatten the batches and compare the message IDs with the sorted input IDs. A count alone would not establish that the right messages survived or that their order is correct.
Parfenov and the pull request report that the new assertion fails on the old implementation with 24 != 29. The pull request author also reported 10 backend tests passing, with lint and mypy clean and the changed lines exercised by tests. These are author-reported checks; they were not independently reproduced here. The essential regression test is the retained-output assertion, because it directly exercises the behavior the function should guarantee. The PR’s test description gives the project-specific details.

How Python’s standard library handles batching
Python’s itertools.batched(iterable, n) offers a useful comparison. The Python 3.14.8 documentation says it lazily consumes enough input to fill each batch and yields batches as tuples; the last tuple can be shorter. The function was added in Python 3.12, and its strict option arrived in Python 3.13.
Tuples are immutable, so a consumer cannot see a previously yielded tuple change because the iterator reused and cleared it. That is an example of stable yielded values, not a requirement that every custom batching function return tuples. Zulip kept its list interface and fixed the ownership problem by allocating a new list for each batch.

What this case does—and does not—show
This is a concrete example of why a quiet production history does not prove an interface is safe for every consumer it permits. It does not establish how common latent defects are across software projects. The practical point is narrower: when a function yields mutable objects, tests should retain them if consumers might do so, and verify both count and exact content rather than inferring correctness from the absence of an exception.
