Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN) adds standardized tools for coordinating time-critical traffic on Ethernet. In a factory, a TSN-capable switch chip can help synchronize devices, schedule traffic, police streams or provide redundancy—but it cannot guarantee an end-to-end result by itself. The endpoints, network configuration, software and interoperability of the complete system matter too.
What is TSN in industrial Ethernet?
IEEE 802.1 TSN is a collection of Ethernet standards and amendments for handling traffic with time-sensitive requirements. Its mechanisms address areas such as clock synchronization, scheduled transmission, traffic shaping, stream policing and redundant delivery. They are tools for managing network behavior, not a blanket promise that every packet will meet a particular deadline.
That distinction matters in industrial networks, where operational technology (OT)—such as controllers, sensors and actuators—may need to share infrastructure with other traffic. IEEE describes TSN as a way for independent applications to share standard Ethernet while supporting real-time quality of service for critical operations. Whether a particular installation meets its timing or reliability targets depends on the design and configuration of the whole system.
What IEC/IEEE 60802 adds
TSN covers a broad set of standards; an industrial profile helps narrow the choices. IEC/IEEE 60802 selects features, options, configurations, defaults, protocols and procedures for bridges, end stations and local area networks used in industrial automation. Its aim is to give vendors and users a shared basis for building interoperable networks that carry OT traffic alongside other traffic.

The IEEE 802.1 project page lists IEC/IEEE 60802-2026 as published on June 29, 2026. Publication establishes the profile, but does not by itself make devices from different vendors interoperable or certify a particular factory installation.
How TSN switch chips work in a factory
An Ethernet switch chip moves frames between network ports. In a TSN design, silicon can also implement timing and traffic-handling functions that help the network follow a configured schedule or treat selected streams differently. Those functions operate within a larger network of switches, endpoints and management software.

Synchronization
Time-sensitive scheduling depends on devices sharing a sufficiently aligned sense of time. Switch silicon may support timing standards such as IEEE 1588 or IEEE 802.1AS, including hardware timing functions. The required synchronization precision depends on the application and the complete clock-distribution design; support for a timing standard on one chip is not proof that every device in the network is synchronized to the needed accuracy.
Scheduling, shaping and policing
TSN mechanisms can reserve transmission opportunities or manage traffic so that time-critical streams are handled differently from less urgent traffic. IEEE 802.1Qbv, for example, is associated with time-aware scheduling; 802.1Qav addresses scheduled traffic shaping; and 802.1Qci supports per-stream filtering and policing. These controls must be configured consistently across the relevant path. A switch feature does not set a system’s schedule or establish a latency guarantee on its own.

Redundancy and frame handling
IEEE 802.1CB supports frame replication and elimination for reliability: a network can send duplicate frames along redundant paths and eliminate duplicates at the receiving side. Frame preemption is another TSN-related capability that can allow certain higher-priority frames to interrupt transmission of a lower-priority frame. Whether a particular chip implements these features—and how they are exposed to system software—must be checked against its exact product documentation.
What Ethernet switch silicon contributes—and what it cannot guarantee
Hardware support can perform timing and packet-handling work in the switch, which is important when the network needs predictable treatment of selected traffic. But a chip specification is only one part of an industrial network design. End stations must support the necessary functions, network devices need compatible implementations, and software must configure and manage them correctly.

Practical deployment also involves synchronization precision, scheduling complexity and, where wireless devices are involved, integration across wired and wireless segments. The result should be evaluated for the specific topology, traffic mix and application requirements. A TSN label or a list of supported standards is not a measured factory performance result, nor does it establish end-to-end conformance or interoperability.

How to choose a TSN switch chip
Start from the network’s required behavior and topology, then verify that the selected silicon, devices and software can provide it together. Compare candidates on the exact capabilities below rather than relying on a family name or a general “TSN-ready” description.
- Match the standards and profile. List the IEEE features and IEC/IEEE 60802 options the application requires. Confirm support for the exact part and variant.
- Check ports and interfaces. Map the number of ports, media or interface types, and link speeds to the intended topology and connected devices.
- Verify timing support. Confirm the needed synchronization standards, hardware timing behavior and compatibility with endpoint clocks and management software.
- Check traffic controls. Determine whether the design needs scheduled transmission, shaping, per-stream filtering and policing, frame preemption or some combination. Confirm how each function is configured.
- Choose the redundancy approach. If continuity through a link or device failure is required, verify the relevant redundancy mechanism, path design and endpoint behavior.
- Evaluate security and software. Establish how the chip is managed, configured and updated, and whether the software exposes the controls the design requires. A silicon feature that the system software cannot use may not meet the practical need.
- Account for integration and lifecycle. Check the design role, revision, documentation, support horizon and integration effort. Evaluation boards or reference designs can help assess a design, but verify the exact kit and supported features before selecting one.
Can TSN combine IT and OT traffic on one network?
Yes, TSN is intended to let multiple applications share standard Ethernet infrastructure, including industrial OT traffic alongside other traffic. The benefit is the ability to apply defined timing and traffic-management mechanisms to selected flows rather than automatically treating all packets alike.
That does not mean every existing IT and OT device can be placed on one network without redesign. The required endpoints, switches, configuration, security controls and operational practices must fit the use case. A converged design should be validated for its traffic, failure modes and timing needs; the existence of a TSN-capable chip alone does not establish that the network is suitable.
