Use 7-Zip with the 7z format to package files into a password-protected archive for sending or storage. Choose VeraCrypt when you want an encrypted virtual disk or drive that you can mount and use as a working space. They protect data through different workflows, so an AES-256 label alone does not establish that one is universally safer.
Choose by how you need to use the files
| Need | 7-Zip with 7z | VeraCrypt |
|---|---|---|
| Basic unit | A compressed or stored archive | A virtual encrypted disk, partition, or storage device |
| Best-fit workflow | Package files as one object for transfer or storage | Mount a protected workspace and use files through it |
| Encryption details documented by the projects | AES-256; SHA-256-based password key derivation with many iterations (7-Zip 7z format documentation) | XTS mode; AES-256 and other cipher options; PBKDF2 or Argon2id for applicable file containers and non-system volumes (VeraCrypt encryption scheme; header key derivation documentation) |
| Plaintext exposure to consider | Files become plaintext when extracted. The FAQ says Explorer drag-and-drop extraction uses a temporary folder (7-Zip FAQ). | Files are available to the operating system while the volume is mounted (VeraCrypt FAQ). |
How to encrypt files with a password using 7-Zip
For a discrete package, create a 7z archive and set a strong, unique password. The official 7z documentation describes AES-256 encryption and a password-to-key derivation function based on SHA-256 with many iterations. Those details describe the format; they do not make a weak password safe.
- Select the files or folders you want to package and open 7-Zip’s archive creation interface.
- Choose 7z as the archive format and enter a long, unique password in the encryption options. Inspect the options shown in your version rather than assuming a particular setting is enabled by default.
- Create the archive, then test that it opens with the password before sending or storing it.
- Send the password separately from the archive, using a different communication channel when practical. Anyone who obtains both can attempt to open the files.
Extraction creates ordinary plaintext files. Choose a controlled destination, and avoid Explorer drag-and-drop for sensitive files if you do not want its documented temporary-folder workflow. Clean up temporary or extracted copies according to your needs; deleting a file does not necessarily guarantee forensic erasure from every device.
Do not assume every password-protected ZIP archive has the same encryption behavior as a 7z archive. The cited 7-Zip format documentation establishes AES-256 for 7z, not for every archive format or program.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
When VeraCrypt is the better fit
VeraCrypt creates a virtual encrypted disk inside a file, or can encrypt a partition or storage device such as a USB flash drive or hard drive. You mount the protected volume to access its contents, then dismount it when finished. VeraCrypt describes its encryption as automatic, real-time, and transparent while the volume is in use (VeraCrypt home page).
This is useful when you regularly open and change a collection of files without repeatedly creating and extracting archives. A container file can also be stored or transferred, but its contents are usable through VeraCrypt’s mounted-volume workflow rather than as a conventional archive.

- 5-in-1 USB-C Hub: Experience comprehensive connectivity featuring a Power Delivery input, two USB-A 2.0 ports, a USB-A 3.0 port, and an HDMI port. (Note: The USB-C power delivery input port is only for connecting an external wall charger to power your laptop and cannot power peripheral devices.)
- 90W Pass-Through Charging: Achieve optimal charging with 90W pass-through power to your laptop, supported by a total input of 100W, with the hub reserving 10W for operational efficiency. (Note: Wall charger not included.)
- Quick Data Transfers: Accelerate your productivity with rapid data transfers using a high-speed 5Gbps USB 3.0 port and two 480Mbps USB 2.0 ports.
- 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Create a file container or choose a partition/device in VeraCrypt, following the volume-creation options in your installed version.
- Set a strong, unique password. If you deliberately configure keyfiles or other parameters, preserve them: losing required access material can prevent you from opening the volume.
- Mount the volume when you need the files, and work with them through the mounted drive.
- Dismount it when you are done. This closes access through the mounted volume, but does not remove any plaintext copies you created elsewhere.
VeraCrypt’s documented XTS mode supports AES, Serpent, Twofish, and cascades. For file containers and non-system volumes, its documentation describes PBKDF2 and Argon2id options for header key derivation. These choices add technical context, but they cannot compensate for a guessable password or an unsafe computer.
Is 7-Zip encryption as secure as VeraCrypt?
The official documentation describes AES-256 for 7z and XTS volume encryption with multiple cipher and key-derivation options for VeraCrypt. Those are not enough to rank one tool as categorically safer: one protects an archive, the other a mounted volume, and the projects’ cited materials do not provide a directly comparable independent audit across threat models.

In either workflow, use a password that is long and not reused. Encryption protects data at rest only within its limits. When you extract an archive or mount a volume, the computer can access plaintext. VeraCrypt’s FAQ warns that an administrator-level attacker, or someone with physical access to a computer that is later used, may capture RAM, passwords, or plaintext from mounted volumes (VeraCrypt FAQ). Encryption does not protect unlocked files from software or an attacker that can access them.
Current VeraCrypt version and hidden-volume notice
VeraCrypt’s release notes date version 1.26.29 to June 9, 2026. The release adds Argon2id support for non-system volumes and fixes two security issues (VeraCrypt release notes). If you rely on hidden volumes in file containers created with versions 1.26.6 through 1.26.28, the notes warn that a fixed issue may affect plausible deniability. They direct affected users to recreate the outer container and hidden volume with version 1.26.29 or later and securely erase the old container. Follow the project’s release guidance before relying on that feature.
