Create a reusable React header by exporting a capitalized function that returns semantic JSX, then render it from a parent and pass changeable content—such as the site name and navigation links—as props. Use <header> for the page banner, <nav> for navigation, and className for CSS hooks. A static header needs no third-party library or menu JavaScript.

1. Create and export the Header component

Add a file such as Header.jsx (or use your project’s existing component-file convention). Define the component as a capitalized function and export it so another component can import and render it. React components return JSX, and the capital letter distinguishes a component from a built-in HTML element.

export default function Header({ siteName, links }) {
  return (
    <header className="site-header">
      <a className="site-header__brand" href="/">{siteName}</a>
      <nav aria-label="Main">
        <ul>
          {links.map((link) => (
            <li key={link.href}>
              <a href={link.href}>{link.label}</a>
            </li>
          ))}
        </ul>
      </nav>
    </header>
  );
}

The header accepts two props: siteName and links. The link array is rendered as a list, with each item’s destination used as its React key. This example uses regular anchors; if your app uses a router, use the router’s link component where appropriate.

2. Render the header from a parent

Import the component into a parent component and provide the values it needs. Keeping the site identity and link data in the parent makes the header reusable without embedding one page’s navigation directly in its implementation.

import Header from "./Header";

const links = [
  { href: "/guides", label: "Guides" },
  { href: "/reviews", label: "Reviews" },
];

export default function App() {
  return (
    <>
      <Header siteName="iTechGuides" links={links} />
      <main>
        <h1>Welcome</h1>
      </main>
    </>
  );
}

Change the array or pass different props when another part of the app needs different labels or destinations. React’s component model is designed for composing reusable UI from smaller components.

3. Add CSS using className

In JSX, write className rather than the HTML attribute class. Add styles in the stylesheet setup your project already uses; React does not require a particular CSS-loading method.

.site-header {
  display: flex;
  align-items: center;
  justify-content: space-between;
  gap: 1rem;
}

.site-header__brand {
  font-weight: 700;
}

.site-header ul {
  display: flex;
  gap: 1rem;
  list-style: none;
  margin: 0;
  padding: 0;
}

These class names are CSS hooks, not required React names. Keep or adapt them to match your project’s naming conventions.

4. Use semantic and accessible navigation

A page-level <header> identifies the site banner, while <nav> identifies a navigation region. These native elements communicate their purposes without adding redundant ARIA roles. Use anchors for destinations so links remain keyboard-accessible with their expected browser behavior.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Give navigation a useful label. The example uses aria-label="Main". If the page has more than one navigation landmark, distinguish their purposes with labels such as aria-label="Main" and aria-label="Footer". Identical repeated navigation can share a label.
  • Keep the markup focused. A basic site header does not need extra ARIA roles or a tabIndex on ordinary links. Avoid adding landmarks that do not represent a distinct region.
  • Separate static headers from interactive menus. If you later add a mobile menu, its button state and focus behavior need their own accessible implementation; a static header does not need menu JavaScript.

5. Check the component before using it

  • Confirm the component is exported and imported from the correct path.
  • Pass a link array whose items contain both href and label.
  • Use a stable, unique key for each rendered list item; this example uses the destination.
  • Verify links can be reached and activated with the keyboard, and that multiple navigation areas have distinct labels when needed.
