Then check Analytics consent, the tag and Measurement ID on the tested page, whether your Google Tag Manager changes are published, and whether DebugView is showing the right device. DebugView does not display ordinary traffic automatically: Google requires debug mode, and denied Analytics-cookie consent or client-side privacy controls can prevent events from appearing.
1. Enable debug mode on the device you are testing
Google states that debug mode must be enabled to use DebugView. For a personal website test, Google recommends connecting the device with Tag Assistant or using Google Tag Manager’s preview mode, then visiting the site and triggering the event. Make sure the browser session you are testing is the one connected to Tag Assistant or preview.
You can also configure debug mode directly. In gtag.js, set debug_mode: true in the gtag('config', ...) command to enable it for events from that configuration, or in an individual gtag('event', ...) call to enable it for selected events. In Google Tag Manager, set the field in the Google tag or the relevant Google Analytics event tag. Follow Google’s DebugView setup guidance for the current configuration details.
To turn debug mode off, remove the debug_mode field. Setting it to false does not disable debug mode.

2. Check whether Analytics consent allows the event
Consent can explain why an event does not appear even when the tag seems to run. Google says events are not visible in DebugView when client-side privacy controls are implemented or when Consent Mode is active and the user has not consented to Analytics cookies. Check the consent state reported by the site’s consent-management tool, and, where appropriate for the site’s consent process, test after granting Analytics consent.
A successful preview connection or a network request by itself does not establish that an event will be visible in DebugView; consent and client-side controls still matter.

3. Verify the tag, destination and GTM publication
Check the page where you trigger the event, not just the site’s homepage or tag configuration. Google’s website setup troubleshooting guidance identifies a missing or incorrectly installed Google tag, unpublished GTM changes, a lack of site traffic and processing as possible reasons website data may be missing.
- Confirm the tested page contains the intended Google tag or Google Tag Manager snippets.
- Verify that the tag sends data to the intended GA4 property’s Measurement ID.
- If using GTM, submit and publish the changes; previewing an unpublished workspace does not deploy it for ordinary site visits.
- Visit the page and perform the action that should fire the event.
Use the intended implementation rather than installing Google tag and GTM snippets as competing setups; Google warns that installing both can cause data to be counted more than once.

4. Select the test device and inspect the right time window
DebugView can be empty simply because it is showing another development device. In the DEBUG DEVICE selector, choose the device connected to your current test. Then trigger the event again. Google describes two useful views: the Seconds stream covers the latest 60 seconds, while the Minutes stream lets you inspect activity in the recent 30-minute period. Select an event to inspect its parameters.
5. Compare with Realtime and check developer traffic filters
Realtime is a companion check for whether key events are being recorded. If your test activity appears in Realtime but not DebugView, recheck that debug mode is enabled for that test device and that the correct device is selected. Google’s Realtime report guidance describes using the report to check current activity.

Also review the property’s developer traffic data-filter state. An active exclude filter can affect debug-mode traffic. Google warns that data excluded by an activated filter is permanently unavailable in Analytics processing, so do not casually activate or change an exclude filter on a production property just to troubleshoot.

Google’s website setup guidance says initial data may take up to 24 hours to appear in Realtime. Separately, its diagnostics guidance says a resolved data issue can take up to 48 hours to be reflected in the property. Those are not guaranteed DebugView delays: DebugView is documented as a near-real-time debugging tool, so check debug mode, consent, implementation and device selection rather than treating an empty stream as a routine 24- or 48-hour wait.
