If your Forgejo instance is running an affected release, upgrade it promptly. CVE-2026-89094 affects Forgejo versions before 16.0.4; the September 10, 2026, release report also identifies 15.0.8 as a fix for the 15.x line. The flaw let template expansion recreate a .git directory after Forgejo had removed it, so a later Git initialization could interpret attacker-controlled files as repository metadata.
Check the instance’s version and release branch, compare them with current supported patched releases, and investigate if an exposed affected instance may have been targeted. The advisory rates the vulnerability CVSS 3.1 at 9.9, but that severity rating does not establish that any particular instance was exploited.
What CVE-2026-89094 does
Forgejo’s template-repository workflow cloned a template, removed its .git directory, expanded variables in files listed by .forgejo/template, and then initialized a new Git repository. The expansion step could create another .git directory. Git initialization could then adopt that directory and its attacker-controlled repository metadata.
The key failure was operation order, not merely the presence of dangerous-looking text in a template. Removing .git before a later operation that can recreate it does not ensure the directory is absent when Git initializes the repository. The GitHub Advisory Database describes the issue as a critical remote-code-execution vulnerability and records a CVSS 3.1 score of 9.9, with a network attack vector, low attack complexity, low privileges required, no user interaction, changed scope, and high confidentiality, integrity, and availability impact. “Low privileges required” does not mean unauthenticated.

As quoted in LWN’s September 10, 2026, report, the Forgejo release statement says a malicious template repository could be used to “read arbitrary data from the Forgejo host, and to execute arbitrary processes on the Forgejo host.” The described impact is a potential capability of the flaw, not evidence that every vulnerable instance was compromised. Which Forgejo versions are affected, and which fix it?
The GitHub Advisory Database identifies Forgejo versions before 16.0.4 as affected. LWN reported that Forgejo 16.0.4 and 15.0.8 were released on September 10, 2026, to address the vulnerability. These are the reported minimum fix versions for those release lines, not a claim that they are the latest supported releases today.

Find the running instance’s version and branch, then upgrade to a current supported release that includes the fix. Use the official distribution, package, or container process for your deployment; upgrade steps differ by packaging and orchestration. Afterward, verify the running instance reports the intended patched version. GitHub Advisory Database entry · LWN report
How to check your Forgejo version
- Check the web interface. Look in the admin panel or the instance footer for the version, as described by the DEV article. Record the release line as well as the version number.
- Check the version API. Query your instance’s
/api/v1/versionendpoint and inspect the reported version. The DEV article describes this method; verify the endpoint’s current behavior against Forgejo documentation for your deployment. - Compare with current releases. Treat versions below 16.0.4 as affected, and versions below 15.0.8 on the 15.x line as needing an upgrade according to the September 2026 reporting. Check current official release information for the supported patched version on your branch.

Use this sequence to establish exposure, protect evidence, and focus investigation on the impact described for the vulnerability. It is a defensive checklist, not a CVE-specific detection recipe; the sources cited here do not establish a validated log signature or detection rule.

- Record the running version and release line. Preserve the version information before making changes, and compare it with current official release information.
- Upgrade promptly. Follow the deployment’s appropriate official package, distribution, or container procedure. Verify the running instance reports the intended patched version after the upgrade.
- Assess who could use template generation. Determine whether the instance was reachable by untrusted or lower-trust users while affected, and whether those users could generate repositories from templates. The advisory’s vector indicates a network attack requiring low privileges; it does not say that an attacker needed no account.
- Preserve evidence before cleanup. If an affected instance was exposed, retain application, reverse-proxy, container, and host logs before removing files or rebuilding systems. Review repository-generation activity and look for unexpected host-side processes or file changes around relevant events.
- Scope the Forgejo runtime identity. Investigate the files, credentials, processes, and services accessible to the account running Forgejo. This follows from the reported potential for host data reads and process execution; it does not establish that credentials were stolen in a particular deployment.
- Review related security issues separately. Forgejo previously had a distinct template-repository symlink issue involving destinations outside the repository. The historical fixes cited for that issue were before 13.0.2 and, on the 11 LTS line, 11.0.7 and later. Those versions are not the fix boundary for CVE-2026-89094.

What to do if an immediate upgrade is not possible
A secondary DEV article suggests disabling repository generation from templates as a temporary mitigation. This reduces functionality and should not be treated as a substitute for upgrading. Confirm the current configuration method against Forgejo’s documentation before changing settings; the cited material does not establish a current config-level procedure.

Controls that limit account registration or repository creation can reduce general exposure, but they do not repair the vulnerable template workflow. Likewise, narrowing Actions runner registration scope or isolating runners addresses adjacent risks from Actions execution; it does not fix this template RCE. Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why a generated .git directory is security-sensitive
A .git directory is not ordinary project content: Git treats it as repository control metadata. In this case, template expansion could write that metadata after an earlier cleanup step. When the subsequent initialization encountered it, Git could use it rather than treating the expanded output as inert files. The practical lesson is to consider generated filesystem paths in the context of what later tools will interpret, not only how those paths were created.
