DepCart is a free, open-source Visual Studio Code extension that searches package registries from a sidebar and prepares an install command for your project. It can reduce the need to jump between registry pages and terminal instructions, but “five browser tabs” is the author’s personal description—not a measured time-saving claim.
What DepCart does
In a September 29, 2026 DEV Community post, author Darshan Jain described opening several registry pages, checking package versions, and working out which package manager a project used before copying an install command. DepCart brings package search and command preparation into VS Code. The extension is not itself a registry or a replacement for a project’s dependency-management tools.
According to the Visual Studio Marketplace listing and the project repository, users can search, select a published version, then copy the generated command or run it in a terminal opened at the project folder. DepCart detects tools using top-level project files; users can also choose a different tool.
Registries and package managers it lists
The extension’s documentation names ten public registries. The commands and snippets available depend on the ecosystem and package manager:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Registry or ecosystem | Documented tools and output |
|---|---|
| npm | npm, yarn, pnpm, bun, and deno |
| PyPI | pip, uv, poetry, pipenv, and pdm |
| Go modules | go get |
| crates.io | cargo add |
| Maven Central | Maven build-file snippets |
| NuGet | dotnet add package |
| RubyGems | bundle add |
| Packagist | composer require |
| pub.dev | dart pub add and flutter pub add |
| Hex | Mix build-file snippets |
| Gradle projects | Build-file snippets |
The listing says Maven, Gradle, and Mix receive build-file snippets because it does not provide an add-dependency command for those cases. Coverage here reflects what the project documents; it does not establish how accurately the extension detects a tool in every project.
Fallback search and optional AI
If a registry search is slow, unavailable, or returns no results, DepCart can use ecosyste.ms as a fallback index. The maintainer also documents optional AI suggestions through a VS Code language-model API, such as GitHub Copilot. Suggestions are checked against a real registry before they are shown, according to the project documentation.

Requirements and limits to check first
- VS Code version: The Marketplace listing requires VS Code 1.90 or later.
- Workspace: The workspace must be trusted.
- Running commands: The relevant package manager must already be installed. DepCart prepares a command; it does not install the package manager for you.
- Registry access: The documented support is for public registries. The project says private registries, custom index URLs, proxies, and Artifactory are not supported.
- Project layout: Detection and command execution target the workspace root, not monorepo subfolders.
- Dependency type: There is no dedicated dev-dependency option.
These requirements and limitations are stated in the Marketplace listing and maintainer repository.
What the project says about privacy
The project says it operates no servers of its own and collects no telemetry. Search text is sent to the enabled registries and fallback index; if AI fallback is enabled, the text is also sent to the language model in VS Code. The listing says project files remain local and that only selected names and top-level configuration files are read for tool detection. These are maintainer disclosures, not findings from an independent privacy or security audit.

How to judge whether it suits your workflow
DepCart is a plausible fit if you work in VS Code, use one of its listed public registries, and want package discovery and command preparation close to your project. If you evaluate it against manual searching or another extension, check whether it supports your ecosystem, detects your package manager correctly, handles your private registry or monorepo layout, and makes its external data flows clear. Also distinguish preparing a command from automatically installing a dependency.
The available sources do not establish comparative speed, a quantified productivity gain, or independently verified security. The author’s “five browser tabs” framing conveys his former workflow, not a benchmark. The Marketplace listing says, “DepCart is new and grows with your feedback.”
