But the milestones disclosed by QuantumScape and Solid Power do not yet show mass production, repeat customer orders or a likely stock-market winner. The investment thesis is therefore a high-risk bet on technical progress becoming commercial execution—not a conclusion established by a partnership announcement.
What makes a battery “solid-state”
A solid-state battery uses a solid electrolyte rather than the liquid electrolyte used in conventional lithium-ion cells. The label covers multiple architectures and business strategies, however; companies using it are not necessarily developing the same product or pursuing the same route to market. QuantumScape describes its focus as solid-state lithium-metal technology. Solid Power develops sulfide solid electrolyte and cells, and says its intended business centers on supplying electrolyte and licensing cell designs and manufacturing processes.
The potential appeal is only the starting point. A cell must meet customer requirements for performance and reliability, and its materials and manufacturing process must work consistently at a cost that can compete with improving conventional batteries. Promising development work is not proof that those conditions have been met.
What the leading disclosed milestones show
QuantumScape: a Honda R&D research agreement, not a production order
On June 18, 2026, QuantumScape announced a multi-year joint research agreement with Honda R&D following a technology evaluation. The announced work covers its battery platform and associated manufacturing processes. That is evidence of continued technical engagement, but it is not a mass-production order, a guarantee of a vehicle launch date or evidence of recurring battery revenue. QuantumScape’s investor-relations materials identify its focus as solid-state lithium-metal technology and list its Q2 2026 results as dated July 22, 2026.

QuantumScape’s 2025 annual report describes competition in terms of battery price, safety, energy density, charge rate and cycle life, as well as customer relationships and access to financial and manufacturing resources. Those are useful criteria for judging the challenge; they do not establish that QuantumScape currently leads on any of them.
Solid Power: electrolyte supply and licensing ambitions, with scale-up still ahead
Solid Power’s 2025 Form 10-K describes a business model built around sulfide electrolyte supply and licensing cell designs and manufacturing processes, rather than becoming the sole commercial cell manufacturer. It describes work with BMW, Samsung SDI and SK On, among others. In the Samsung SDI/BMW evaluation arrangement, Solid Power supplies electrolyte for Samsung SDI’s separator and/or catholyte and cell work. The partner evaluates cells against agreed performance parameters, subject to technical requirements. An evaluation is meaningful development activity, but it is not the same as a binding commercial supply commitment.

In its August 4, 2026 Q2 release, Solid Power reported improved electrolyte performance during work under that joint evaluation agreement and discussions about a potential Korean commercial-scale production joint venture. It also said site acceptance testing for the SK On line had been completed in April and that the line-installation agreement was complete; negotiations for a new collaboration agreement were ongoing. These are distinct steps, and neither the discussions nor the completed testing establish a commercial order.
Solid Power said its continuous electrolyte pilot line was targeted for validation and operational startup in Q4 2026. The 2025 Form 10-K described a planned line with capacity of up to 75 metric tons of electrolyte annually, and a possible partner-backed Korean facility designed for up to 500 metric tons annually. These are company plans and design capacities—not achieved output, proof of manufacturing economics or evidence of demand. The August 2026 release still described the pilot-line startup as planned.

How to read Solid Power’s financial figures
Solid Power reported $21.7 million in revenue for full-year 2025 in its 2025 Form 10-K. That figure should not be read as electrolyte product sales alone: the filing describes collaboration, licensing and line-installation-related sources, as well as grant-related funding.
For the first half of 2026, Solid Power reported $2.8 million in revenue and grant income, a mixed category that included collaboration revenue and U.S. Department of Energy grant income. The company also said a $1.2 million reversal of previously recognized revenue resulted from changed assumptions about milestone payments. Grant income, milestone-related collaboration revenue and product sales are not interchangeable indicators of customer demand.

As of June 30, 2026, Solid Power reported total liquidity of $419.3 million, comprising cash, cash equivalents and available-for-sale securities as presented in its Q2 release. For Q2 2026, it reported an operating loss of $30.3 million, operating expenses of $30.0 million and a net loss of $23.8 million. These company-reported figures describe a point-in-time balance and a quarter; they are not, by themselves, a forecast of how long the company can fund development.
Solid Power’s Q1 2026 filing said it had not generated cash flows from electrolyte sales or licensing sufficient to cover costs. Its 2025 filing also notes reliance on government contracts and grants for part of revenue and R&D funding, alongside uncertainty about continued government support. A serious financing assessment therefore needs updated cash-flow assumptions, not a simple division of one liquidity figure by one quarter’s loss.

What would turn a technology thesis into an investment case
Investors can track progress as a sequence. Each stage reduces a different uncertainty, but one milestone does not automatically prove the next:
- Cell performance: Results must meet customer specifications across repeated cycles and relevant operating conditions. Company targets or a partner evaluation are not independent validation of production-ready performance.
- Customer qualification: A partner must complete its technical assessment and decide the cell meets its requirements. The partner may control cell design, qualification and commercialization decisions.
- Manufacturing validation: Pilot equipment must demonstrate a repeatable process, quality, throughput and acceptable yields. Nameplate capacity is not the same as saleable output.
- Commercial terms: Development activity must lead to an economically meaningful agreement, such as a supply contract, paid license or other defined commercial arrangement. A joint research agreement, evaluation or discussion of a possible venture does not establish that outcome.
- Repeat production and financial durability: The business must turn validated manufacturing into repeat customer demand and revenue while funding its operating and capital needs. Grants and collaboration payments should be separated from product sales when assessing this progress.
For any stock, the market side of the analysis matters too: current share price, diluted share count, market capitalization or enterprise value, and a transparent valuation method. No current prices, valuation multiples, dilution analysis or full public-company comparison are established by the company milestones and financial figures cited here. Without those inputs, it is not possible to say whether either stock is cheap, whether potential progress is already reflected in its price, or which company offers more upside.
Why the shares could rise—and why they might not
The upside case
- A cell that meets automaker requirements and can be manufactured reliably could create a new commercial opportunity for its developer or technology supplier.
- Industrial partners provide routes to evaluation, manufacturing expertise or potential commercialization. The disclosed Honda R&D agreement and Solid Power partner activities show engagement, though not guaranteed sales.
- Solid Power’s proposed electrolyte-supply and licensing model could differ from a business that must build every commercial cell plant itself. Its success still depends on qualified products, partner decisions and commercially viable terms.
The downside case
- Technical: Cell performance must satisfy customer requirements over repeated cycles; promising development results can fall short of commercial specifications.
- Manufacturing: Moving from development or pilot equipment to high-volume, consistent output takes process development, equipment, quality control and capital. A planned line or a stated capacity does not establish yield or cost.
- Commercial: Evaluations and collaborations can end without supply contracts. Even a successful technology may depend on a partner’s timing and choices.
- Funding and dilution: Development-stage companies may need substantial capital before product revenue can support costs. Grants and one-off collaboration milestones may not recur, and issuing shares can dilute existing holders.
- Competition: Established battery suppliers and automakers have manufacturing experience, resources and customer access. Solid-state developers must compete not only with one another but also with improvements to incumbent lithium-ion batteries and other battery chemistries.
- Policy and timing: Government support can contribute to research funding, but continued grant support is uncertain. Company timelines are forward-looking targets that can change.
- Valuation: Technical progress does not mechanically cause a share-price increase. A stock can fall even as development advances if expectations were higher or financing needs increase.
How to compare solid-state battery stocks responsibly
Before treating any company as a “winner,” compare like with like and update the evidence from current filings and releases:
- Architecture and product: Identify whether the company is developing a lithium-metal cell, sulfide electrolyte, another solid electrolyte or a hybrid approach—and what it actually plans to sell or license.
- Development stage: Separate lab results, customer samples, pilot-line validation, vehicle demonstrations, customer qualification, commercial contracts, repeat production and revenue.
- Partner evidence: Distinguish evaluation and research agreements from paid development, purchase commitments and commercial supply contracts. Check the disclosed scope and which party makes qualification decisions.
- Manufacturing: Look for demonstrated output, yields, throughput, quality certification and capital needs, rather than relying on planned capacity alone.
- Financial durability: Check cash and securities, cash flow, quarterly spending, grants, collaboration income, debt, equity issuance and the funding horizon using the latest available reports.
- Competition and adoption: Compare against incumbent battery improvements and alternative chemistries, and look for customer qualification, vehicle-level evidence, cost and adoption—not just laboratory or partner milestones.
- Valuation: Use up-to-date prices and diluted share counts with a stated valuation method. Do not infer upside from technology progress without asking what expectations the share price already reflects.
The available company disclosures support a development-stage comparison of QuantumScape and Solid Power, not a complete ranking of public battery companies. They do not establish which stock is undervalued or likely to outperform. Solid Power’s CEO John Van Scoter said in the company’s August 4, 2026 Q2 release: “We remain on track in advancing our new continuous manufacturing line and are progressing towards ISO 9001 certification as we further strengthen our commercial readiness and quality management system.” The statement describes the company’s progress and target; it is not a report that certification or commercial-scale production had already been achieved.
