John Ebenezer says his first open-source contribution was a narrowly scoped fix in the Kalvium community’s DevLinks project: removing a leftover console.log. He first found his way around the unfamiliar repository, checked the relevant code, then submitted the change in pull request #33. His account, published September 29, 2026, describes the experience as a lesson in understanding a project—not just writing code.
What John Ebenezer says he changed
In his DEV Community article, Ebenezer says the work addressed Issue #19, which he describes as removing a leftover console.log. He reports creating the branch fix/19-remove-console-log, making the change, and opening PR #33, titled “Remove leftover console.log.” These project details come from the author’s account; the issue and pull request were not independently verified.
His description makes the contribution small in code scope but meaningful as a first experience: he says he searched the repository for the relevant log and manually checked the matching code rather than applying an AI suggestion without verification. The available account does not establish whether he used a fork, whether the pull request was merged, or what review feedback followed.
Why the first step was understanding the repository
Before changing code in an unfamiliar project, a contributor needs enough context to know what the code does and whether the proposed fix fits the project. Ebenezer’s account emphasizes orienting himself in DevLinks and checking the relevant code before editing. That is a useful distinction: finding a line that looks removable is not, by itself, proof that removing it is safe.

As he put it: “The most interesting part of this experience was realizing that open-source contribution is not only about writing code.”
How to approach a first contribution
GitHub’s open-source contribution guidance recommends starting with the project’s own contribution instructions and considering a small documentation improvement or bug report. The exact steps vary by project, so treat this as a general path rather than a substitute for that repository’s rules.

- Check the project. Read its contribution guide and confirm that the repository is active enough for your effort to be useful. GitHub’s Open Source Guide suggests looking at recent commits, issue discussions, pull request reviews, and maintainer responses; it also recommends checking that the project has a license.
- Choose a clear, limited task. A typo, broken link, or obvious small bug can be a reasonable first scope. Look for an issue marked
help wantedorgood first issue. If an issue has neither label, GitHub advises asking maintainers whether outside contributions are welcome and confirming the scope before investing time. - Follow the repository’s workflow. GitHub’s general flow is to fork and clone the repository, create a descriptive topic branch, make and commit the change, push it, and open a pull request. A project may prescribe a different process, so its instructions take precedence.
- Verify the change yourself. Read the surrounding code and make sure your edit addresses the issue without creating an unrelated change. Run the checks the project documents, if applicable, and explain the change clearly in the pull request.
Keep the project identity straight
Ebenezer identifies his project as DevLinks, maintained by the Kalvium community. A similarly named public repository, nensii21/devlink, has its own contribution guide, but the available sources do not establish that it is the same project. Its setup steps, technologies, or contribution rules should not be assumed to apply to the DevLinks described in Ebenezer’s account.
