A passing test shows that, in one particular run, the observed result matched the expectation the test encoded under the conditions it set up. It does not prove that the expectation was correct, that the scenario covered the risks that matter, or that the test would catch a relevant defect. The useful question is not simply whether a test is green, but what could be wrong while it still passes.

What a passing test establishes

A pass is evidence about a specific execution: the test ran in its configured environment and its checks accepted the observed outcome. Sri Ramya describes it as reaching the expected result for that particular scenario (Sri Ramya, DEV Community). The claim should therefore be bounded by the test’s inputs, setup, assertions, and the version of the code that ran.

That result is meaningful, but narrow. It does not establish that the encoded expectation represents the right product behavior, that other inputs behave correctly, or that the test would notice every important way the implementation could be wrong. A green result means the test did not object in that run; the test itself must be examined to learn what failures it could have detected.

Execution is not the same as verification

Code coverage records which structural elements—such as statements or decision outcomes—were exercised. It can help identify code that tests never reached. It cannot, by itself, tell you whether a test checked the important output or whether its assertions would reject an incorrect result. A test can execute a line and still make an assertion too weak to catch a bug.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Martin Fowler cautions that “Test coverage is of little use as a numeric statement of how good your tests are” in his 2012 article on test coverage. That does not make coverage useless: low coverage can point to untested areas, while a high percentage is not a quality grade or a guarantee of correctness. The ISTQB syllabus likewise treats structural coverage as the proportion of specified structural elements exercised, not as proof that requirements have been validated (ISTQB CTFL syllabus). There is no universal percentage that establishes adequate testing across different codebases and risks.

What could still be wrong while the test passes?

Start with the test’s claim: write in one sentence what behavior it is intended to verify. Then inspect the setup and assertions for gaps that could let a plausible defect slip through.

  • The expectation is wrong or incomplete. The test may faithfully enforce behavior that does not match the requirement or user need.
  • The assertion is too weak. It may check that a result exists, for example, without checking that the value or state is correct.
  • The scenario omits an important condition. Fixtures may not represent relevant data, user states, boundaries, or business rules.
  • A mock or stub hides dependency behavior. A test can pass against a simplified substitute even when the real dependency behaves differently.
  • The covered path is not the risky path. Execution of one branch or workflow does not show that other important paths were exercised.

These are reasons to interpret a test result in context, not reasons to dismiss automated tests. Compare what the test claims with the requirement and the risk it is meant to reduce.

Ask whether the test would fail for a plausible defect

For an important test, read its assertions rather than relying on its name. Identify a plausible change that would make the behavior wrong, and ask whether the checks would reject it. If the answer is unclear, strengthen the assertion or add a test for the missing condition.

Mutation testing makes this question more concrete. A mutation-testing tool introduces small changes to code and reruns the tests. PIT (PITest) calls a mutation “killed” when tests detect the change and “survived” when they do not; its basic concepts documentation explains the terms. A surviving mutation can reveal a gap in detection, but it does not automatically mean the suite is defective: some mutations may be equivalent to the original behavior, invalid, or affected by test-run errors. A mutation score is a diagnostic, not proof that the product is correct.

Judge confidence from several kinds of evidence

A useful assessment considers more than whether the suite is green or what percentage of code it covers. Compare the tests with requirements and critical workflows, then look at the conditions and failure modes they exercise.

  • Which requirement, user outcome, or risk does each important test address?
  • Are relevant states, boundary cases, and data represented in the setup?
  • Do assertions verify the result that matters, rather than merely confirming execution?
  • Do test doubles and dependencies reflect the behavior the test is meant to cover?
  • Are results stable enough to provide dependable evidence?
  • Do deliberate, plausible code changes get detected where expected?

Coverage can help locate unexecuted structure; mutation testing can probe whether tests detect selected changes; requirement and workflow review can expose risks neither measure addresses. Taken together, these are different views of test evidence, not interchangeable guarantees.
