For a quick answer across communities, Reddit’s AI search can summarize posts and comments, but check its citations before relying on the result.
Choose the kind of result you want
Reddit search offers five content types: posts, communities (subreddits), comments, media, and people. Choose the type before refining your query: a post search finds submissions, while a comment search can surface recommendations or answers buried in a discussion. Reddit’s guide to how Reddit search works describes these options.
- Posts: submissions matching your topic.
- Communities: subreddits to explore or join.
- Comments: replies and discussion within posts.
- Media: images, video, and GIFs.
- People: a specific redditor. Reddit says this filter is unavailable when searching within a community.
If you are discovering a subreddit or profile, start typing in the search bar and review its suggestions. Choose a suggested community or profile, or select “Search for [query]” to open full results.
How do I search within a subreddit?
Open the community and use the search bar from its page. Reddit says this scopes results to that community; its search feature guide describes a community-name pill in the bar and a control to show results from all of Reddit. Check the scope indicator before searching, especially if you meant to search Reddit-wide.

How do I filter Reddit search by author, flair, or other fields?
Use a field name followed immediately by a colon and its value. Reddit documents author, flair, self, selftext, site, subreddit, title, and url. For example, author:reddit subreddit:reddit search updates looks for the terms in the specified author and community context; cats subreddit:pics site:imgur.com combines a topic, subreddit, and site filter. These are Reddit Help examples, not guarantees that matching results exist.
Keep the value attached to the field name: write author:cats, not author: cats. Put quotation marks around a multiword field value, such as title:"kitten gif". For a phrase in a general query, enclose the words in quotation marks to ask for that sequence rather than treating them as separate terms.

Combine search terms with Boolean operators
Reddit supports uppercase AND, OR, and NOT, plus parentheses to group terms:
cats AND dogsrequires both terms.cats OR dogslooks for either term.cats NOT dogsexcludes results containing “dogs.”
When mixing operators, group related parts with parentheses—for example, (cats OR dogs) AND shelter. Reddit Help warns that combinations can produce unexpected results without grouping, so test a complicated query and adjust it if the results do not match your intent.

How do I find the newest Reddit posts?
For post results, choose New to put the newest submissions first. Use the time filter as well when you want a specific period: Reddit lists all time, past year, month, week, 24 hours, and hour. A recent time window can remove older matches, while New orders the remaining results by recency.
Choose a sort that matches your goal
Reddit lists these post sorts. Relevance is the default; Reddit says it factors in relative word rarity, post age, and votes or comments.

For comment results, Reddit lists Relevance, Top, and New. Choose Relevance for a close match, Top for highly ranked discussion, or New for recent replies. Sort labels and controls may vary as Reddit updates its interface.

Search comments when you need the answer or recommendation inside a post rather than another submission. Reddit’s help guidance gives two routes:

- Reddit app: open the post and tap the search icon to search its comments.
- Desktop: use the comments search bar below the comment box.
For broader comment discovery, select Comments as the search content type, then use the available sort options to prioritize relevance, ranking, or recency.
When to use Reddit AI search—and how to check it
Ask a natural-language question and select Ask to get an AI-generated summary across relevant posts and comments. Reddit says AI search includes inline citations linking to source posts, comments, and communities, so use those links to inspect the underlying discussion.
Reddit Help’s AI search page, updated July 30, 2026, cautions: “In addition, the information presented in AI search comes from redditor posts and comments and hasn’t been vetted or endorsed by Reddit.” Generative answers may also be inaccurate. Treat the summary as a way to find relevant discussions, not as confirmation that a claim is true. For legal, medical, or financial decisions, verify important claims against reliable sources outside Reddit as well.
Reddit Help stated that AI search question limits were subject to change. As of its July 30, 2026 update, it listed up to 10 questions per week for logged-out users, 50 per day for logged-in users, and 100 per day for Premium subscribers. These are dated limits, not a promise of current availability or quota.

A practical search sequence
- Pick the result type: posts, communities, comments, media, or people.
- Set the scope: search from a community page for that subreddit, or switch the scope control to all of Reddit.
- Start with clear terms: quote a phrase when its exact wording matters.
- Add field filters: use forms such as
subreddit:name,author:name, ortitle:"two words". - Group Boolean logic: use uppercase operators and parentheses for combined conditions.
- Choose a sort and time window: use New and a recent window for current posts, or another sort to prioritize relevance or engagement.
- Inspect the result itself: open promising posts and read the relevant comments; follow AI citations if you used Ask.
