Separately, configure the Microsoft C/C++ extension with the right compiler and project settings: IntelliSense is not Copilot, but inaccurate IntelliSense can still make C++ work in the editor confusing. Neither configuration guarantees better Copilot completions.
Enable Copilot inline suggestions in VS Code
Copilot inline suggestions appear as faint “ghost text” at the cursor. Check the Copilot menu in the VS Code title bar to see whether suggestions are enabled. You can enable or disable them globally or for the active language; the corresponding setting is github.copilot.enable. If suggestions are suppressed only in C++ files, check the language-specific toggle as well as the global one.
To accept a suggestion, press Tab. VS Code’s Copilot documentation also describes a keyboard shortcut for accepting only the next word or line; check the current keybinding shown in the editor, since shortcuts can vary by platform or customization. Inline suggestions are distinct from next edit suggestions, which can propose a change at another location. That feature has its own setting, github.copilot.nextEditSuggestions.enabled.

Give Copilot useful C++ context
Keep related files open
When it is relevant, open the header, implementation file, or nearby project code that shows the types and conventions the current file uses. VS Code documentation notes that related open files can help Copilot build a broader picture of a project. This is context guidance, not a promise that a particular file arrangement will improve a suggestion.
Describe intent in comments
A concise comment just above the code can specify the intended algorithm, constraints, or methods and properties to implement. For example, a comment can say that a function should return the first matching item without modifying the input, or that a method should validate a range before updating state. Such instructions make intent more explicit than leaving Copilot to infer it from surrounding code alone.

Review each completion before accepting it. Check that names, types, ownership and lifetime assumptions, error handling, and behavior match your project; a plausible-looking suggestion is not a substitute for compiling and testing C++ code.
Copilot and C++ IntelliSense are separate systems
GitHub Copilot generates AI inline suggestions. The Microsoft C/C++ extension provides language features such as IntelliSense completions, hovers, and error checking. The extension does not include a compiler or debugger; it relies on command-line tools available in your environment. As a result, Copilot can be enabled while C++ IntelliSense is misconfigured, or IntelliSense can work while Copilot suggestions are disabled.

For C++ IntelliSense, compiler selection, include paths, language standard, and project build configuration matter. A wrong compiler or include configuration can cause unresolved headers, inaccurate diagnostics, or unsuitable language-service completions even though Copilot itself is functioning. Start with the VS Code C/C++ overview if the extension or required toolchain is not installed, then configure the project using the IntelliSense configuration guide.
Choose how VS Code learns your C++ build configuration
The C/C++ extension can discover common compiler installations, but a detected compiler is not necessarily the one your project uses. Choose a configuration source that reflects the actual build. The options below are not interchangeable: compile databases provide per-file commands, while a base configuration is a fallback and may require you to supply project details yourself.

When both provider and compile-database settings are relevant, check the C++ extension’s documented precedence and the active project setup rather than assuming the base fields override a matching per-file command. The C++ extension settings reference documents cppStandard, provider behavior, and how a matching compile-database entry is applied.
Check the active IntelliSense configuration
- Open the project folder in VS Code and make sure the Microsoft C/C++ extension is installed.
- Open a C++ source file, then use the C/C++ configuration controls to select the compiler, configuration provider, or compile database appropriate to the project. For a base setup, check the compiler path, include paths, compiler arguments, and C++ standard.
- If using
compile_commands.json, confirm that it contains an entry for the source file you are editing. If it does not, the base configuration applies instead. - Watch the C/C++ status indicator. It can show “IntelliSense: Ready” or “IntelliSense: Updating”; allow an update to finish before judging the current language-service results.
Why Copilot may not be suggesting code
If inline suggestions are missing, troubleshoot the Copilot service before changing IntelliSense settings. VS Code’s Copilot FAQ recommends checking these causes:

- Enablement: Verify that inline suggestions are turned on globally and for the current language.
- Account or plan state: Confirm that VS Code detects your Copilot account or subscription. The FAQ also identifies reaching the Copilot Free plan’s monthly inline-suggestion allowance as a possible reason suggestions stop.
- Connectivity: Check that your network connection permits Copilot to connect.
- Logs: If enablement, account state, allowance, and network access do not explain the problem, inspect the Copilot logs for errors.
These checks concern Copilot inline suggestions. If Copilot is responding but C++ headers, symbols, or diagnostics are wrong, investigate the compiler and IntelliSense configuration separately. The VS Code Copilot FAQ provides the troubleshooting guidance.
Using Copilot Chat for C++ project questions
Copilot Chat’s C++ code-understanding tools are a separate workflow from inline completion. VS Code’s C++ DevTools guide lists the C/C++ DevTools, C/C++, and CMake Tools extensions as prerequisites and advises configuring IntelliSense. For a Chat prompt, name the exact symbol, file, or component you want it to consider rather than asking a vague project-wide question. These recommendations concern Chat-assisted code understanding; they do not establish that the tools tune the inline completion model.
