Usually, yes: each Git worktree needs its own dependency tree installed from that worktree’s manifest and lockfile. Git shares repository data between worktrees, but a checkout is still a separate working directory, and ignored files such as node_modules are not copied into it. To reduce repeated storage or setup work, use your package manager’s shared store where available and automate the project’s normal install command when creating a worktree.
Why a new worktree does not contain node_modules
Git describes a worktree as another working tree attached to a repository: it lets you check out more than one branch at a time. The worktrees share repository data, but each has its own checked-out files and per-worktree state, including its own HEAD. See the Git worktree documentation.
node_modules is generally not tracked by Git. It is normally ignored local content, so adding a worktree checks out tracked files but does not recreate that dependency directory. The new directory has its branch’s package manifests and lockfile, but not the installed packages. The practical consequence is that a worktree can look complete while commands that need dependencies fail until you install them.
Do you need to run npm install in every worktree?
Install dependencies in each worktree that needs to run, test, build, or otherwise use them. Use the package manager and install procedure the project already specifies; the lockfile in the current worktree should determine the resolved versions.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For an npm project with a committed package-lock.json, npm ci is the clean-install option. It installs according to the lockfile and replaces an existing node_modules directory, so do not treat it as a universal command: check the repository’s package-manager conventions and lockfile first. Projects using Yarn, pnpm, or another package manager should use the matching project procedure.
How to use worktrees without paying the full install cost repeatedly
Let the package manager reuse stored package data
Separate dependency trees do not necessarily require separate full copies of every package’s contents. The practical GitWorktree.org node_modules guide describes pnpm’s shared content-addressable store as a way to reuse package data while each worktree retains its own node_modules arrangement. That can reduce duplicated storage, but it does not guarantee a particular disk saving or faster install: results depend on the project, package manager, platform, and what is already in the store. See also the GitWorktree.org FAQ.

Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
This approach keeps the useful distinction intact: the package contents may be reused, while each branch gets dependencies resolved for its own manifest and lockfile. Choose a package manager supported by the project rather than switching solely on the assumption that a shared store will always improve performance.
Automate the install when creating a worktree
A small shell function or project script can make setup automatic. For example, a helper can create the worktree and then select the repository’s established install command based on its authoritative lockfile. A basic Git command for creating the directory is:

git worktree add ../feature feature-branch
After that command, run the install command your project uses from ../feature. If you automate the sequence, encode the team’s actual package-manager and lockfile conventions; do not choose an install command merely because a particular lockfile happens to be present alongside stale or non-authoritative files. Avoid blindly copying .env files between worktrees: they may contain secrets or branch-specific settings.
Why a shared node_modules symlink is a risky default
Pointing every worktree at one shared node_modules directory can appear to work when branches have the same dependencies. It becomes fragile when branches diverge: a shared tree may not reflect the requirements declared by the current worktree’s manifest and lockfile. That can cause a branch to resolve versions different from the ones it expects, and the symlink can make the mismatch less obvious than a missing dependency.

Use a shared dependency directory only when the dependency requirements and relevant installation conditions are known to match, and when the team accepts the maintenance risk. Otherwise, keep each worktree’s dependency arrangement separate and let a package-manager store or setup automation address the cost.

| Approach | Dependency correctness | Disk use | Setup friction | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Install separately in each worktree | Each worktree can install from its own manifest and lockfile. | May duplicate package contents; amount depends on the project and package manager. | Manual unless automated. | Clear isolation, with repeated setup. |
| Separate worktree trees with a shared package-manager store | Each worktree retains its own dependency arrangement; use the package manager’s supported workflow. | Identical package data may be reused; no fixed saving is established. | Requires package-manager setup and an install in each worktree. | Store behavior and benefits vary by project and environment. |
| Automated install on worktree creation | Correct if the automation runs the project’s intended install procedure for that worktree. | Does not itself deduplicate package data. | Low after the helper or script is configured. | Automation must follow the repository’s authoritative lockfile conventions. |
| One shared node_modules symlink | Can mismatch when branches’ dependency requirements diverge. | Uses one shared tree. | Initially low, but may obscure failures or stale resolution. | Fragile unless dependencies and install conditions match. |
Do npm workspaces share dependencies between Git worktrees?
No—not by themselves. npm workspaces manage local packages within a top-level project and link those packages during installation, as described in the npm workspaces documentation. That feature does not automatically make separate Git worktrees share one node_modules directory. Treat each worktree as a separate checkout and use its own project install workflow.
